    this and that

I guess the guys went through some situational hitting drills in camp the past day or two. Putting on a show was Ken Griffey Jr. from all reports. What I've heard is Jr. has done more of that (situational hitting) the last few years which is good, because we need a team approach to this offense. Get them on. Get them over and Get them in.

Wak will approaching Yuniesky Betancourt and see how the youngster feels about hitting in the two hole. Wak would like to see Yuni develop like Jose Lopez has at the plate. At the end of last year, the skipper moved Yuni into the two hole and Yuni actually did pretty good.

I know Ryan Rowland Smith wants to start but who will be the situational lefty out of the pen ? We have Wash, and Bedard going from that side at least until one or both of them are dealt somewhere. We'll see how it all shakes out in the coming weeks.

    Lightbulb more WBC

I don't know where to put this. Since the WBC happens during Spring Training, I"ll put it here. Noted earlier, Kenji Johjima and Ichiro, as well as others will play in the WBC, even though Kenji really should be in camp. If Japan goes all the way (and they figure to do) they will be playing in the finals which is the 23rd day of March, which leaves about a week left of Spring Training. The good news is the semi's and finals are in LA, California. With Ichiro, it really doesn't matter but with Kenji, I believe it does. Hey, Kenji has that new three year deal and he has the back of upper Mariner Management, so I guess he can do what he wants. With a good Spring, Jeff Clement could steal the Catcher's spot, but they will probably give it to Kenji, no matter what. Jamie Burke is a stud as a back up and they won't keep three Catchers, you'd think. What to do ? I tell you what. Send Johjima packing on the last day of Spring.

LHP Ryan Feirerabend out for season

Tommy John surgery a possibility. Wiil visit Dr. Yocum in Los Angeles. That is why Zduriencik spent all off-season acquiring pitching depth, there's never enough.

    Ryan Feierabend

    Geoff Baker Blog Seattle Times:

Just a note on Ryan Feierabend. The Mariners issued a release today saying that surgery has yet to be decided upon as a treatment option for him. Feierabend will meet in Los Angeles with Dr. Lewis Yocum on March 3 and he will determine the extent of the injury. At that point, if surgery is decided upon, it will happen on March 4. At this point, surgery is looking very likely.

    Freddy Guzman

Outfielder Freddy Guzman has fractured the hamate bone in his right hand. He will have surgery to remove the bone. Guzman is scheduled for surgery on Wednesday, March 4. Guzman surgery will be performed by Dr. Don Sheridan. An average recovery time from a surgery of this type is four to six weeks.
Guzman, 28, split last season between Toledo (AAA) and Erie (AA) in the Detroit Tigers organization. He ranked second in stolen bases (71) and T4th in runs (101) among all minor league players. He stole 71 bases in 82 attempts, a 87% success rate.

    Wladimir Balentien finally in camp

Balientien is two weeks late and out of minor league options. Camp is full of guys looking for outfield spots as well as other positions. If I was any of those guys playing in the WBC, I think I'd rather be in camp. Could there be a better time to have the WBC ? I don't think any time of year is good. As a player, the mlb is your job, the other is for country. Balientien came up twice in 2008 and struggled. He went down to AAA and destoyed the pitching there. He came back up and struggled. Balientien has power the other way if he will just go with the pitch more often instead of trying to pull everything. An example is early on, he hit a fly ball the other way and it went out. Let's hope he works this out.

Balientien had visa problems that prevented him from arriving om time.

    Tui

    Tui taking his swings

Tuiasosopo off to hot start with Mariners

    http://seattletimes.nwsource.com/htm...59_mari04.html

Everyone who reads the Mariner's area of Baseball Fever know I'm pulling for Matt Tuiasosopo. I thought last year that he was defensively ready to play in the bigs and he need some work at the plate. He's still young (like 22) and may need another year of AAA ball, but given the M's power play with adrian Beltre, when they said he could not play in the WBC, even though they said earlier that it was his call, Matt may get a shot to play. Like some others Matt came up as a SS but moved to third when everyone figured that Yuniesky Betancourt would be the Mariner SS for the next ten years.
