I'm not down with that. I like the quadrennial wait for the WBC and the Olympics and the soccer and World Cups. As a fan, it builds up the anticipation more. Having said that, I get Jimmie's point. Players (especially American players) need to think of the tournament as more of a normal part of the baseball landscape.

Yes, Nutt, try harder. Here's a helpful hint: If you find yourself writing the phrase "I hate to be a...", stop writing and try again.

After taking some time to digest things, here are my thoughts on this year's WBC.

Overall, I'm mildly disappointed with it. Some of the games were, of course, terrific. And the crowds for the big games--Puerto Rico v. Dominican, Mexico v. USA, USA v. Dominican, and all of Taiwan's home games--were terrific. That's the reason I love this tournament so much.

But the finals were a drag. The weather stunk, the crowd was muted, and the match-ups just weren't all that compelling. Puerto Rico was a great story, but, honestly, they weren't as much fun to watch as other teams. The Netherlands played tight, as did Japan. And, in the end, the Dominicans were in a different class than the rest. Once they got ahead, it just seemed like the game was over. Which is kind of boring.

A few other problems I had: The tiebreaker scenario in Taiwan was a drag. There's nothing more discouraging for fans and teams, I think, for a team to win its last game like Korea did against Taiwan, tie up the standings--and then go home. In addition, Korea's general underperformance--along with Mexico's, USA's, and, especially, Venezuela's--was a bummer. These teams should've kept every game tight.

Finally, of course, there's the attendance. It was a mistake giving Japan a first and a second round. The empty seats in Fukuoka explain a lot of the collapse first round attendance. I'm not sure the explanation (although mispriced tickets has to be a major culprit), but the WBC can't make that mistake again. It's no fun for fans to watch baseball playing in an empty dome on TV.

Don't get me wrong: I enjoyed this WBC. A lot. But after the sublime extra-innings finals of 2009--with Dodger stadium packed with the most excited fans I've ever seen at a baseball game--this was a let-down. Maybe that's to be predicted. I'm hoping though, that the WBC can learn some lessons from this and put on a better show in '17.

(Basically, I had the same thoughts that the folks at Baseball America and quinnystar27 did above.)

I understand the peeve, but there are more constructive ways to express it.

    Brazil --- 3-3 .500 4

    Spain --- 3-4 .429 4 1/2

    France --- 0-2 .000 5

    Nicaragua --- 0-2 .000 5

    Thailand --- 0-2 .000 5

It is fascinating how teams which dominated WBC I and WBC II fell early in this year's WBC III --- South Korea which was 12-4 previously; Cuba which was 9-5 previously; and Venezuela which was also 9-5 previously. Similarly, it is amazing how far teams reached in the tournament who were given no chance -- Netherlands, Italy, Brazil, Spain, and New Zealand.

Has anyone heard about the revenues generated by the 2013 WBC? I think it generated about 18 million in 2009. I haven't read anything.
