All this talk of subways in the Yankee Stadium thread have inspired me to ask the same question here (since I'm a fan of both teams ): For those headed to Penn Station after a Mets game, and assuming you don't have time to wait for an express (like if you have to leave a game early), what do you do? Do you:

    - remain on the 7 all the way to Times Square, then transfer to a 1/2/3 to Penn

    - transfer from the 7 to the E at 74th/Broadway and ride *that* to Penn

    - instead of the E, transfer to the F at 74th, ride it to Herald Square, and walk a block

(Assuming that you are trying to get back to Penn as quickly as possible)

I don't think this place will ever rock like Shea. It might be physically impossible
Of course you are right about the sounds-seats in fair territory with the noise. People were closer in Shea's upper decks.

Shea is home, this is a taxpayer funded monument to corporations and restaurants, badly flawed from day one.

This really only applies for night games, because it is night games where one MUST address train headways. Train headways are the lengths of time between same trains. During rush hour, this may be as low as 4 minutes. During late night hours, it can be as much as 30 minutes. Consequently, the goal is to change trains as few times as possible during a late night trip. Although you will likely not wait 29 minutes each time you transfer, you never know, and if you need to make a commuter train, you really don't want to have to HOPE a train makes it.

You will be waiting at Willets Point, no matter what option you choose to take.

That being written, I would take the #7 local all the way to Times Square. It's duration is the most certain at late hours. If I had less than 15 minutes to catch a commuter train at Penn at the time I got to Times Square, I'd walk down 7th Av. It's only 10 blocks.

    Cheers!

The problem is, some trains take longer than others - some don't run as many trains in the same amount of time, so you end up waiting longer. The time that you save by reducing transfers might be offset by increased time spent waiting for the train you transfer to. Remember what I said in the Yankee Stadium II thread - when taking the 4 from NYS, do NOT transfer to the 2 when trying to get to Penn, because the 2 runs so damned rarely. Same story here, I think.

Yeah, that's what I usually end up doing. I figure that it's best to get as far as possible on the first train you end up on (i.e. the 7). At least you know that if you're on a train, you're moving, and not waiting.

it's june, "contention" is a relative term - june ain't september.
with a just above .500 record, all the wilpon family collateral damage as well as a staggering economy folks won't be showing up in large #'s until a consistently winning product show itself.
with the current roster with it's tendency for injuries and erratic play it's gonna be a while.
as impressive as santana is and what he did, second division clubs have pitchers who throw no-hitters too...

why so down? The sky is not always falling. A .500 record this year would be a major accomplishment against all the Experts picking them at between 65-75 wins.

I find it kind of funny that the night they give away BLUE hats is one of the nights the Mets are wearing their black uniforms.

^ And what's worse for people like me with huge heads: They don't make the black caps any bigger than a size 8. I wear 8 1/2!!! So I have to wear a blue cap with my black Mets jacket, which looks kinda odd.

It's funny you talk about big head, for years I thought I had a big dome, I wear a 7 5/8 which fits just right but I have been buying 7 3/4 and that's too big , I had the wind blow off my hats on a few occasions.

Keep walking on the boardwalk past the 7 platform and get a westbound LIRR train. Its like $4 and goes straight into Penn Station. 15 minutes tops.

^ But the LIRR doesn't run as often as the 7 train does, isn't that right? Especially after a night game? I thought the LIRR only ran trains like once every 15 minutes.

It is a 16 minute ride to Penn Station, once the train is there. But it only runs every 30 minutes.

Robinson is not honored — at Citi Field and annually at every major league ballpark — because he was a Dodger. He's honored because he was the first ballplayer to cross the color line. He gets a well-deserved rotunda because that event, that could have happened anywhere in the country, happened in a National League town called New York.

And if you have issue with Citi Field evoking Ebbets Field, home of the Brooklyn Dodgers, then you better damn well have issue with the Dodger Blue that the Mets have worn since day one.

The LIRR is the fastest way to Penn if the schedule lines up, though you lose time buying the ticket if you don't have one already while you probably already have a Metrocard or if you just missed the previous one.

Do they run the 7 train run express to Manhattan after Mets games now? If so, you should get to Times Square in about 25 minutes instead of 35 minutes, after which you should be able to catch a 1/2/3 train for one stop to get to Penn Station within 5-10 minutes, for a total travel time of about 30-40 minutes. Of course you may have to wait a few minutes to catch a 7 express train as opposed to a local, I'd think they alternate express and local trains.

If the only option is a local 7 train, I'd transfer at 74th St./Roosevelt Ave. (about 10 minutes from Willets Pt.) and take the E train about 20-25 minutes to 34th St./Penn Station, plus whatever the wait time would be for the E train at that time of day/night (5-10 minutes). Generally 35-45 minutes of travel time.

Yes, there is an express 7 from CF to Times Sq following every home game. From Mets.com:

"Express trains leave Willets Point shortly after the conclusion of each home game and the service runs until about one hour after the game. Express trains are queued outside of Willets Point and arrive on the middle track every six minutes."

So does anyone know if there are actual plans to renovate the bullpens again since they moved the walls in and it kind of looks like a mess in that area?

The only issue I have with this plan is the loss of the nice wide open parking lot to the west of the stadium. It's relatively easy to get out of the parking lot now. If the lot gets replaced with parking structures to make room for the other development shown, I'll be more like getting out of the Yankee Stadium parking, which is a nightmare.

Parking for games was the first thing I thought of as well. Under Northern Blvd/Whitestone Expy will be really jam packed with cars now, or even the Marina.
