No. But what a hitter this guy is. What is he hitting now? How many more ABs (or really how many more games) until he is eligible for the batting title?

He's hitting .394 on the season, but only .286 over the last week.

He likely won't get the minimum 502 plate appearance's required, but that doesn't mean he can't still win the batting title...

Pujols may be the best overall hitter in the game, but Mauer has a much better chance at .400 than he does. Mauer places his hits much more than Pujols. Pujols swings much harder.

He'll get the 502 PAs without any problem. To quality for the batting title right now Mauer would need 239 plate appearances. He currently has 227 plate appearances. He should qualify for the batting title within 10 days or so. Mauer is currently two hits shy of .400.

I would be surprised if Mauer can even hit .360 for the season. It is just too much to ask from a catcher to hit any higher than that.

His May was nuts. He should get to the 502 plate appearances by season's end - he plays every day. And i understand that if he doesnt, but if you deduct those ABs and he still has the highest average that he gets the title.

In any event, my guess is he hits .345- .350 on the year. Can he beat Ichiro? Will be a good race.

You can't sit on a lead and run a few plays into the line and just kill the clock. You've got to throw the ball over the $%#%! plate and give the other man his chance. That's why baseball is the greatest game of them all. ~Earl Weaver

    .356 - 22 HR's - 95 RBI - 165 OPS+

    All career highs.

I'm interested enough to see if he can hit .363 to obtain the best BA by a catcher. The obtainable feats are the ones we should be discussing.

I would love to see him do it (in a Yankees uni!)
Haha....just kidding (sort of). I really would enjoy it if he did it, but I really doubt he will. He is one hell of a hitter though...it's nice to see that he's finally becoming a bit more of a household name this year...and it's way overdue.
    I mean c'mon...he's a 26 year old catcher who's already won 2 batting titles!
    Amazing...

    Two batting titles?

Mauer is now just 13 plate appearances short of qualifying for the batting title.

    What? 502 is the requirement.

By the end of the year. But its 3.1 plate appearances per team game.

    3.1 x 162 = 502
    3.1 x 80 = 248

Mauer currently has 204 AB and 31 BB (204+31=235, 248-235=13)

There's your math lesson for the day.

Technically, the requirement is not 502 PA's. It's 3.1 X (number of team games). For a 162 game schedule it is 502 PA's. However if a team only plays 161 or less games the requirement would be less than 502 PA's. If a team plays more than 162 games then the requirement would be more than 502 PA's.

8 PA's in last night's game certainly help his cause.

Twins have now played 82 games, so he needs 255 PA's to qualify. He's now at 252, so he could be qualified this week. Though he's not going to have much margin to play with if he does get nicked up again. The Twins are carrying 3 catchers now, so he's been getting DH'd on most of his "off days", which really helps his cause.

He's there. Mauer officially leads the AL in batting average, OBP, SLG, OPS, OPS+, and OWP. And he's 2nd (to Morneau) in Runs Created.

And Mauer is currently hitting .389 (89 for 229) just three hits short of .400.

I wonder what would draw more fan interest and media hype - Mauer sitting at .399 with heading into the last series of the season or Pujols sitting at 72 HR's heading into the last series of the season?

True, but we've all seen plenty of single-season HR records broken in recent years. Most of us haven't seen a .400 hitter.

Joe is in the HR Derby. By how many does he eclipse the record 41?
