Congratulations to 19th Century 1Bman Dan Brouthers for winning the 34th round of our Greatest Player series! He scored 33 points, including 3 first places from our 22 voters.

Dan beat out Roberto Clemente, who scored 26 points with 5 1st place votes.

But the scoring is what I feared. There were 6-7 players who bunched support right after that. Our consensus is breakind down. It will take some skillful bandwagon meisters to break free of the pursuing pack from here on in.

--Because I can only love 5 men at a time. Seriously, Cochrane is next on my catcher list and I have him way ahead of the last catcher we elected. I am a big Greenberg fan, but he doesn't really stand out from several other1B's available. Why Greenberg over Mize or Thomas or McCovey? I'd rather have Anson, with his uniquely epic career in the 19th century, than pull Greenberg out of the pack of slugging 1B's that he fits in with.

I must not have seen your question, Mark.

He did enough in his 9+ year peak to prove to me he belongs at this level. 170 OPS+ over 9 seasons, with one full season essentially lost to WW1. Despite playing in the same league as Cobb and Speaker - and later Sisler and Ruth - he finished in the top 5 in OPS+ every season from 1911 to 1920 (other than 1918), and finished 2nd 3 times.

I also think - given his batting style and power and how well he hit in 1920 - that he'd have been very likely to be able to continue to rank among the best hitters in the AL through his early 30's.

And even with his career over at age 30, he still recorded 294 Win Shares. With credit for his lost year to WW1, that would put him at roughly 310-315 for his career. Even assuming that 1920 would be his last great year, and he would have declined starting the very next year if he'd been allowed to stay in baseball, you're still looking at probably a 375-400 Win Share career, to go along with a great peak. And that's being extremely conservative, IMO.

So if I was ranking them just on career value, he'd be no where near this spot. But that's just one of the things I look at, and in cases like his, his career value is pretty useless for the purposes of evaluating his greatness.

Yount over Ripken...subjectively I think Yount was just a better player than Ripken during his peak. For me, Ripken never reached the level of greatness than early 80's/pre-injury Yount did, so I have Ripken about 5-7 spots lower than Yount. But since Yount was my favorite player growing up, I'm probably overrating him somewhat.

Personally, I see JJ's career as being most similar to Greenberg, Mize, or Dick Allen's (if we don't give Greenberg or Mize any war credit time).
Mize and Greenberg are good picks now, but they project to 1900-2100 games with war credit, and they lost the time from their peaks.

Joe Jackson would have needed about 4-5 "freebee" years to bring him to about that range. He did however put up 3 straight 190 OPS+'s when that was very rare. His 170 might be better than Greenberg or Mize's 158.

If he gets 4 freebee years added on to the end, he could go around here. If not, then he takes quite a tumble.

I need to see cases for Ripken versus Yount.

One issue I have with Ripken was that while he was a good fielder, and relatively good hitter for a shortstop, he wasn't a good baserunner for a shortstop. If he had a 114 OPS+ and an average SS is 85, he is looking good in relation, but when baserunning is included, he is not as good a relative offensive producer. He was pretty much a station to station runner.

Yount could run. Ripken moved to third and played OK. Yount moved to CF and played gold glove caliber defense.

I at least convinced myself that Kaline matches up pretty well with Reggie even when we look at prime seasons, as a hitter. He's not as good, but if he's a top 5 right fielder, I think he has an edge. They each had 10 140 OPS+ seasons, and Kaline is ahead, outside of those 10 top seasons. If Reggie had posted say 4 years of 170+, then it might make a difference.

The issue is that you have Ripken and Reggie 1 and 2, and I have Kaline and Yount 1 and 2. Those are going to be the guys for whom we tend to split votes on.

Doesn't Kaline come out by all the metrics as being a world class RF whereas Reggie is lucky if he finished in the positive numbers and if so only because he got to DH. That's what puts Kaline at the head of the remaining RFs on my list. But hose two along with Crawford and then throw in Gwynn, Clemente and Waner make for quite a a mess, and really Dewey Evans must be in that neighborhood as well.

No, I'm just acknowledging that his total career value is not completely representative of his greatness as a player. Just as I would when evaluating someone like Koufax or Sisler or Youngs or Gehrig or Grove or Clemente.

Reggie played 2538 out of 2861 (88.7%) or 143.7 per 162 team games for 18 consecutive years.

I had Kaline 39th last time, I've moved him up for two reasons

1) After looking at the stats, Kaline is indeed slightly superior to Jackson
2) I'm trying to stock up Kaline's points so he overtakes Roberto "The Overrated" Clemente

I probably was wrong to have Ripken out of my top 5.

Reggie had a 151 OPS+ for about a 2100 game stretch.
Ripken had 118 from '82 on in about 2100 games mostly at short.
Reggie ran better. Cal was a better fielder, but the OPS+ difference outweighs the position, particularly because Ripken did not run well for a SS.

On the other hand, Ripken had a 96 OPS+ in his final 500+ games at third. Not great, but valuable.
Reggie was 102 as a DH for his last 800.

They are close. As is Yount, as is Kaline.

There are some contenders out there, but Kaline, Reggie, Robin and Cal I just think had 4 supremely excellent CAREERS of 20+ years. They had primes, and they put up value in their declining years. WE have to assume that a guy like Clemente would have had a decline like one of them to get him into that company.

Brett I think Ripken and Yount are extremely but I would take Ripken a little over Yount. Yount probably is a little better as an offensive player because of his baserunning but only a little bit. Their OPS+ are 115 for Yount, 112 for Ripken. Ripken though played about 800 more games at SS than Yount, Yount played almost as much at CF as SS. BP's metrics and DWS also have Ripken a better SS than Yount. I see it as Ripken's playing SS more than Yount vs. Yount's edge in baserunning, what really puts Ripken ahead for me is that he was giving the straight full 162 games for every season, while Yount would miss games here and there. It's not like Yount wasn't durable, but "The Streak", while overrated, does mean something in terms of Ripken's in season durability.

You might also want to consider Willie McCovey. He has 2300 games with OPS+ 153, and played in what I think were stronger leagues than Mize. He usually doesn't come out as quite the fielder that Mize was, but I think with his unreal 1969 season his peak is a little higher

A difference to me is that Jackson played when the AL was well integrated and just about fully integrated for most of his career. In the 50s many AL teams still had not integrated and well into the 60s many teams had just integrated and still weren't open to signing black players. Reggie was one of the first great career AL black players. I think Reggie deserves a little more credit on those OPS+ numbers.
