None of the Above (Blank Ballot)
PLEASE READ BEFORE VOTING!
Format and Rules
Voting Rules: Voters may vote for between 0-15 candidates. Votes will be made public, and voters are encouraged to post their ballots in the thread and not view results before voting. PLEASE LIMIT YOUR BALLOT TO 15 VOTES AT MOST. EXCESS VOTES MAY RESULT IN YOUR BALLOT BEING DISQUALIFIED.
-Blank Ballots: A "None of the Above" option is available if you believe no one is worthy and you wish to submit a blank ballot. This option is not to be taken lightly and it is strongly urged that it be used only after the utmost consideration, as non-votes carry great weight. Additionally, if using this option, please post your rationale.
Voting Criteria: Players are to be evaluated within the context of the era in which they played and the history of the game to that point. Players are not to be held to standards that would materialize at a time beyond the year of the current election. Modern statistical analysis is permitted but must be applied strictly within historical context not to go beyond the year of the current election. Players are to be judged based solely on their playing careers. Other, non-playing contributions may be considered to the extent that they coincided with a player's playing career (such as a player/manager).
Thoughtfulness and Editing Ballots: Please review and thoughtfully consider the candidates before voting, and make sure you have accurately filled out your ballot before submitting. Requests for editing ballots after the fact will generally not be honored. Exceptions might be made if a voter accidentally voted for the wrong player or accidentally went over the voting limit (but I strongly encourage you to do your best to prevent either from happening).
Required Support: Players receiving at least 75% support in an election will be elected. Players need at least 5% support to appear on the next ballot.
Player Eligibility: Players eligible for an election will have last played at least 5 years prior to the election year and have appeared in at least 10 Major League seasons. If a player appeared in less than 10 seasons, he may still be eligible if he had a minimum of 3000 PAs or 1500 IP, though extra scrutiny will be applied. Players will remain on the ballot for 15 years, provided they continue to receive at least 5% of the vote, at which point they will become indefinitely eligible for periodic elections conducted by the Veterans Committee.
- Age Exception: For players 40 or older, they will become eligible the later of either 5 years after their last year of continuous play, or their first inactive year at age 45 or older.
- Death Exception: For players who meet the criteria for consideration, but die before their first year of eligibility can have the five year waiting period waived and placed on the ballot the year of death.
Election Period: Elections will close exactly one week after starting. The next election might not commence for another day or two.
Conduct Policy: Every vote is a voter's opinion on who should be elected to the Hall of Fame. It is our responsibility as voters to be respectful towards each other. Personal attacks should not be tolerated and you should notify a moderator rather than allowing an argument to escalate and further derail discussion of the candidates.
Recounts: There is a moratorium on regular election recounts until the 1960 election. It is your responsibility to ensure that your ballot is correct when it is submitted. No votes will be adjusted if you accidentally clicked on the wrong box.

I voted full ballot again. I gave Allie Reynolds extra credit for putting up his numbers despite having diabetes. I voted for Berger and Lazzeri in their final year of eligibility. I considered dropping a vote for Manush, but I haven't voted for him in a long time and I didn't see a good reason to vote for him again.

IMO, Bob Elliott is the strongest candidate on this year's ballot and as proven here, Bob Elliott scores better than 1/2 of the 3rd basemen we have elected already in WARP3, Win Shares, defensive ability, and traditional statistics. He was also an MVP in 1947, a year that was not war depleted and while a few of his best years came during WWII, he continued to perform at the same level for a number of years after WWII. Let's not make another mistake and leave yet another deserving third baseman outside our HOF.

I agree that Elliott is a pretty good candidate, better than most might think, and that he would fit within our standards at thirdbase.
However, what deserving third basemen have we left out? I can't think of any clear omissions at the position, and the fact that we've elected Stan Hack and Heinie Groh, as well as Tommy Leach through the VC, makes me think we've done a pretty good job at the position. I remember there was some championing of Lave Cross and Larry Gardner, as well as some of the better 19th Century players like John McGraw, Ned Williamson, Denny Lyons, Levi Meyerle, and Billy Nash, but their omissions haven't seemed like much of an issue.
I also still don't get why Tony Lazzeri isn't getting close. Mark has laid out a good argument for him, and I don't really see Lazzeri as that dissimilar to Larry Doyle.
I had 13 names, so I voted for Walker (who I've gone back and forth on) and Reynolds (who I may or may not drop next time) to make it a full ballot.

Between the VC and regular voting, I don't think we have had any major oversights at third base so far. It's just strange that with the exception of Frank Baker, we've had no third baseman elected easily.
Regardless, it would be nice to hear from people here who are not voting for Bob Elliott as he was much better than almost 90 of the people we've voted into our hall so far. He has a dominant peak and more than enough career value to go along with great defense. I haven't been on the site forever and see no discussion of him anywhere where he is even analyzed outside of a few casual mentions at the HOM. Some of those not voting for him; it would be helpful to learn why you are not voting for Bob Elliott.
As we discussed many moons ago, 3B can be a hard position to assess, particularly in the early decades of this project when the position was really a defensive position that may have been hard for some to appreciate. It's really a nebulous position with muddled expectations, especially offensively where it's somewhere between 1B and the other IF positions, but it's hard to know where. There's also the very distinct possibility that perhaps just out of coincidence, there haven't been as many talented players at the position as there have been elsewhere. Along these lines, it is kind of curious that we really haven't seen a 3Bman sustain a long and productive career at the position and attain certain milestones as we have with pretty much every other position save catcher (which understandably presents a shorter shelf life). There's no one at 3B who's really stood out as a definitive great for 10-12 years at the position like with other positions. We might actually be witnessing the greatest 3Bman ever play right now in the form of Mr. Elliot's replacement with the Braves - Eddie Mathews. In just 8 seasons, Mathews already has 299 homeruns.
Whatever it is though, I think our representation is pretty good, though it took some hard fought battles over the likes of Heinie Groh, Ezra Sutton, and Tommy Leach.

!! 90 of the roughly 150 players?
This not so much in pointed reply as for everyone's benefit. He has a dominant peak and more than enough career value to go along with great defense. I haven't been on the site forever and see no discussion of him anywhere where he is even analyzed outside of a few casual mentions at the HOM.
AG2004 posted a "Keltner List" on Bob Elliott in this forum a couple of days ago.
Out of Character:
Over at the Hall of Merit, by the way, Elliott is the second thirdbaseman after Tommy Leach in the current backlog. On the other hand he's far behind Leach, with significant support but not a contender for election any time soon, where Leach is a contender.
Over at Cooperstown, well, it's sad that they elected George Kell rather than Elliott. That's the kind of thing they once did but don't do any more; neither one would have a snowball's chance in hell as a similar standout player one to three generations later.
"He has a dominant peak"
His five years in Boston, 1947-51, do not show up as a dominant peak by sabrmetic ratings because he was not a great fielder like Leach (who was too inconsistent at bat for any kind of dominance) or Heinie Groh.
AG notes that he rates higher on career numbers, such as 287 win shares, than on career numbers.
I consider Elliott a candidate whose calling card is prime seasons rather than peak or career. In order to see his prime seasons one must select by fielding position, when he was a regular thirdbaseman, because Elliott's merely good(*) batting seasons were 1940-41 and 1945-46 when he was Pittsburgh's regular rightfielder and then when he split time between right and third. He was a fulltime player, what many would loosely call an "every day player", for twelve years 1940-51.
Clay Davenport measures him thus:
3.0 2.8 4.7 6.9 6.4 3.7 2.7 9.3 7.8 7.0 5.3 3.9 (WARP1 --bottom line)
19 11 28 36 35 18 _7 48 50 36 43 28 (BRAA --Batting Runs >Avg)
underline marks Elliott's eight seasons as a regular thirdbaseman.
For some reason Elliott didn't bat nearly so well when he was a regular outfielder 1940-41 or splitting his time 1945-46 (about 40% thirdbase).

On a side note, is Monte Irvin going to be on the regular ballot or the special VC ballot? Will Perucho Cepeda be added to the next Negro League VC ballot? While he played the majority of is career in Cuba, he was excluded from MLB because of the color of his skin and played alongside many Negro League greats who are already in our HOF.
Looking ahead, we will likely have some good election years on the regular ballot once we get past this one:
1960: Ferris Fain, Ralph Kiner, Vern Stephens, Hal NewHouser, Vic Raschi
1961: Bob Feller, Phil Rizzuto, Jackie Robinson
1962: Roy Campanella, Walker Cooper, George Kell, Dizzy Trout
1963: Bob Lemon, Pee Wee Reese, Sal Maglie, Virgil Trucks
1964: Larry Doby, Del Ennis, Enos Slaughter
1 Johnson
2 Elliott
3 Manush
4 Berger
5 Lazzeri
6 Keller
7 Henrich
8 Klein
9 Newsom
10 Bridges
11 Gomez
12 Leonard
As far as Elliott goes has there been a 3B with a longer significantly better offensive prime other than probably Baker and Collins? McGraw and some of the 19th Century players may have risen higher but for only a few years. Groh is in the same area but a little below, Leach too inconsistent. Bill Bradley and Steinfeldt had only a few years. Traynor certainly posted a higher BA but did not match Elliott in the other categories and falls short as well. Rolfe and Dugan are not there. So I may be wrong, and I'm sure I've omitted someone (like Ezra Sutton) from the brief discussion, but Bob Elliott has had the 3rd or at worst 5th best career at 3B of all-time.

PV, that's quite a transition from maybe the third best "offensive prime" to "3rd or at worst 5th best career".

What's to say? you argued for maybe the third best offensive prime and summarized it as 3rd or at worst 5th best career.
- By career WARP 3 measures, Bob Elliott is 5th all time behind Stan Hack, Frank Baker, Heinie Groh, and Jimmy Collins. He ranks ahead of Pie Traynor, Ezra Sutton and Tommy Leach in this measure.
- By WARP best 3, Bob Elliott scores a 25.2, ahead of those same 3.
- By CWS, Bob Elliott ranks in the top 3rd.
- By Prime years, Bob Elliott ranks in the top 5.
- Highest SLG of any third baseman.
- Way up there in gray ink as compared to the third basemen we have elected
- Top 3rd OPS+
- 2 Win Shares Gold Gloves
IMO, that puts Bob Elliott #5 all-time ahead of Pie Traynor, Ezra Sutton and Tommy Leach among third baseman though 1953. Not just in terms of prime years.
