    BBF Progressive HoF Election: 1962

    PLEASE READ BEFORE VOTING!

    Format and Rules
    Voting Rules:
Voters may vote for between 0-15 candidates. Votes will be made public, and voters are encouraged to post their ballots in the thread and not view results before voting. PLEASE LIMIT YOUR BALLOT TO 15 VOTES AT MOST. EXCESS VOTES MAY RESULT IN YOUR BALLOT BEING DISQUALIFIED.
-Blank Ballots: A "None of the Above" option is available if you believe no one is worthy and you wish to submit a blank ballot. This option is not to be taken lightly and it is strongly urged that it be used only after the utmost consideration, as non-votes carry great weight. Additionally, if using this option, please post your rationale.

Voting Criteria: Players are to be evaluated within the context of the era in which they played and the history of the game to that point. Players are not to be held to standards that would materialize at a time beyond the year of the current election. Modern statistical analysis is permitted but must be applied strictly within historical context not to go beyond the year of the current election. Players are to be judged based solely on their playing careers. Other, non-playing contributions may be considered to the extent that they coincided with a player's playing career (such as a player/manager).

Thoughtfulness and Editing Ballots: Please review and thoughtfully consider the candidates before voting, and make sure you have accurately filled out your ballot before submitting. Requests for editing ballots after the fact will generally not be honored. Exceptions might be made if a voter accidentally voted for the wrong player or accidentally went over the voting limit (but I strongly encourage you to do your best to prevent either from happening).

Required Support: Players receiving at least 75% support in an election will be elected. Players need at least 5% support to appear on the next ballot.

Player Eligibility: Players eligible for an election will have last played at least 5 years prior to the election year and have appeared in at least 10 Major League seasons. If a player appeared in less than 10 seasons, he may still be eligible if he had a minimum of 3000 PAs or 1500 IP, though extra scrutiny will be applied. Players will remain on the ballot for 15 years, provided they continue to receive at least 5% of the vote, at which point they will become indefinitely eligible for periodic elections conducted by the Veterans Committee.
    - Age Exception: For players 40 or older, they will become eligible the later of either 5 years after their last year of continuous play, or their first inactive year at age 45 or older.
    - Death Exception: For players who meet the criteria for consideration, but die before their first year of eligibility can have the five year waiting period waived and placed on the ballot the year of death.

Election Period: Elections will close exactly one week after starting. The next election might not commence for another day or two.

Conduct Policy: Every vote is a voter's opinion on who should be elected to the Hall of Fame. It is our responsibility as voters to be respectful towards each other. Personal attacks should not be tolerated and you should notify a moderator rather than allowing an argument to escalate and further derail discussion of the candidates.

    1962 Guide

I am an idiot, because I forgot to vote for both Roy Campanella or Vern Stephens. Oh well, Campanella will get in without my vote anyway.

Seen on a bumper sticker: If only closed minds came with closed mouths.

RIP Harry Kalas. Thanks for 38 great years, though I wish we could have had more.

  6. Ballot:

Tommy Bridges--Likely the last year on my ballot with Urban Shocker and Lefty Gomez both left on the outside looking in.

Roy Campanella--He shouldn't be struggling like he currently is on the ballot.

Dom DiMaggio--With war credit, he fits in with several outfielders we have elected.

Bob Elliott--One of the best pre-Eddie Matthews era third basemen and better than several who we have elected, including Pie Traynor.

Lefty Gomez--Seems to fit with several who we have elected already.

Bob Johnson--Fits with out current outfield standard.

    Charlie Keller--With some war credit.

Phil Rizzuto--With some war credit. I'll attempt to make a case for him when I have more time.

Vern Stephens--Seems to fit out standard for SS.

Dizzy Trout--Seems on par with Warneke, Newsom, Brecheen, Gomez and Bridges who all have suport around here in this project.

A brief argument for Tommy Bridges:
    • Led league in K twice
    • Top-ten in K 12 times
    • Top-ten in K/9 11 times
    • Top-ten in ERA (and ERA+) 10 times
    • Top-ten in SHO 10 times
    • Top-ten in K/BB 8 times
    • Top-ten in H/9 7 times
    • Top-ten in WHIP 6 times
    • Top-ten in CG 6 times
    • Top-ten in IP 5 times

Bridges may not have been a dominant pitcher, but he was consistently among the best pitchers in the AL for the bulk of his career. He is statistically similar to Vance and Newhouser, both members of our Hall of Fame, and fits in nicely within the lower third of our Hall, in general.
This is an actual case of the truth.

  8. Bridges
    Campanella
    DimMaggio
    Elliott
    Gomez
    Rosen
    Walters
    Warnecke

I'm a little surprised, well shocked, at the huge disparity between Gomez/Bridges and Walters/Warneke. I've supported Bridges all along and was swayed by last ballots colloquy to vote for Gomez, but I still see Bridges and Walters as the head of the class. Walters is the only one to broach 3000 IP @ 3100+ which, IMO, makes up some of the difference in the ERA+ that is 115 v. 119 for Warneke @ 2700 IP 125 for Gomez @ 2500 IP and 126 for Bridges @ 2800 IP. Walters also was an MVP, and for those who like to play hypotheticals, probably had the career percentages pulled down by some rocky early years with as he converted from 3B at the ML level before putting it together with Cincy at the end of the 1930s.

  9. Tommy Bridges
    Roy Campanella

    Bobo Newsom
    Al Rosen
    Vern Stephens

    Bucky Walters
    Lon Warneke

Ellis Kinder just missed. I went with Dutch Leonard instead.

Not particularly dominant, but consistently very good for sure. Bridges is one of just 11 pitchers to date with at least 7 seasons with an ERA+ of 130 or higher. We've elected every other player to have accomplished this feat (and a vast many who haven't).

    Lefty Grove: 13
    Cy Young: 13
    Walter Johnson: 12
    Christy Mathewson: 11
    Kid Nichols: 10
    Pete Alexander: 7
    Tommy Bridges: 7
    Mordecai Brown: 7
    Addie Joss: 7
    Ted Lyons: 7
    Ed Walsh: 7

If you remove the deadball era players, Bridges is just one of three pitchers to achieve this since the beginning of the liveball era.

The knock against Bridges is that outside of about a 4 year stretch, he wasn't much of a workhorse and never really had a signature season.

  12. We have to do better than 20 votes. That will be tied with our first year for the lowest turnout.

This has really been one of those slow elections. I figure a lot of our normal late stragglers just haven't been able to get around to voting yet.

Careful what you wish for. Those "late stragglers" are usually the ones who sink Lefty.

I wouldn't consider Lefty in at all. The late stragglers are the ones who have doomed a lot of candidacies anyway.

The voter turnout is the lowest it has been since I started running the project, but not the lowest (20 votes in 1901). We elected two players. Roy Campanella was elected on his first ballot appearance and Lefty Gomez squeaks in after fifteen years on the ballot. I will be looking at the Negro League ballots soon so I can finish rounding out this year's class.

From the Negro League Players VC, add Ray Dandridge, Monte Irvin and Hilton Smith.

  18. This is the closest Bob Elliott has come to being elected to date. This time around, he missed election by 1 vote. I'm still hoping enough people will come around on him in the regular election.
