    BBF VC Progressive HoF Negro League Players Election: 1962

    BBF VC Progressive HoF Negro League Committee: 1962 Election

    Please Read
    Below is a master list of players who have spent time in various Negro Leagues and players who played in major or minor leagues before the color line was enforced. All players on the list ceased play by 1957. Exceptions are being age 45 by 1962 or having died between 1957 and 1962, waiving the five-year wait. There are some newcomers to the ballot that were mistakenly omitted from the 1957 ballot that still deserve consideration.You can vote for anyone on the final ballot below and you can vote for up to two write in candidates. Anyone can comment, but only ballots from the VC will be counted in the election. The election concludes at the close of the regular election, which is October 9 at 11:34 PM EDT.

    Note:
    We've arrived at the fourth election for players who played the majority of their careers in the Negro Leagues. There will be few (if any) newly eligible candidates at this point because after integration, the Negro Leagues essentially served as a minor league for talent.

    For the 1967 Negro Leagues Players VC election, those eligible are:

    1. Candidates who received at least 2 votes in the 1962 election;
    2. Write-in candidates who received at least 50% of the vote and;
    3. Any historical candidate before integration that is discovered through research.

    -The VC has been trimmed to 14 members. Any former members can return by request. Any member that no longer wishes to participate in the VC can notify me by PM or by posting in this thread.
    -Any VC member that wants to participate in the Negro League VC should notify me via PM. I want to establish a separate 12 member committee for the Negro League VC.

    This is the smallest Negro League ballot we've had to this point. Integration has reduced the Negro Leagues to essentially minor league talent, so those who played solely in the Negro Leagues (or just in the integrated minor leagues) are going to be ineligible unless nominated. There are a few on this ballot that have large portions of Major League play on their resume, but could not qualify for the regular election for whatever reason.

    I've provided links to my arguments about each player's worthiness above. Just click on the name, and you'll be able to read it. I will note that in terms of this project, my sentiments on Chino Smith are more positive than expressed in the article.

    There are two days left in the election and only eight members have voted. If we can't get to 12 votes from the VC, I'd be willing to accept invitations to join this committee along with your ballots. I've had a lot of difficulty getting participation in this side of the project, so I'm open to allowing this.

    A lot of the people on this particular committee are very busy people. Have you tried PMming them?

    As an aside, by 1965, we are 20 years into integration. Maybe after this election, it's time to shut this side down and merge the players who received 2 or more votes that did not get elected with the general players VC?

    Let me quote myself from BBF VC Progressive HoF Contributors Election: 1956 (#29).
    >>
    1959:
    Posey has not been elected. He is on the Negro Leagues players ballot, where he enjoyed some support in 1956. I don't believe there is a good case for him as a player (maybe a basketball player) but there is a good case for him as a contributor.
    <<
    (P.S. slam-dunk case as a contributor)

    I did that after posting the message.

    I see two ways of approaching this situation.

    1) Continue to hold the special committee, but transform it into a non-MLB players committee.
    2) Combine this committee with the regular VC, but have the final ballots be separate. The committee would still exist.

    Either way, I'd like for this side of the project to at least run for one or two more cycles (up until 1972) before making the change. There will be no newly eligible candidates, so this would mostly be for dealing with holdovers. However, if we elect no one in 1967, then I'll merge with the regular VC in 1970 or create a new non-MLB players committee.
