None of the Above (Blank Ballot)
PLEASE READ BEFORE VOTING!
Format and Rules
Voting Rules: Voters may vote for between 0-15 candidates. Votes will be made public, and voters are encouraged to post their ballots in the thread and not view results before voting. PLEASE LIMIT YOUR BALLOT TO 15 VOTES AT MOST. EXCESS VOTES MAY RESULT IN YOUR BALLOT BEING DISQUALIFIED.
-Blank Ballots: A "None of the Above" option is available if you believe no one is worthy and you wish to submit a blank ballot. This option is not to be taken lightly and it is strongly urged that it be used only after the utmost consideration, as non-votes carry great weight. Additionally, if using this option, please post your rationale.
Voting Criteria: Players are to be evaluated within the context of the era in which they played and the history of the game to that point. Players are not to be held to standards that would materialize at a time beyond the year of the current election. Modern statistical analysis is permitted but must be applied strictly within historical context not to go beyond the year of the current election. Players are to be judged based solely on their playing careers. Other, non-playing contributions may be considered to the extent that they coincided with a player's playing career (such as a player/manager).
Thoughtfulness and Editing Ballots: Please review and thoughtfully consider the candidates before voting, and make sure you have accurately filled out your ballot before submitting. Requests for editing ballots after the fact will generally not be honored. Exceptions might be made if a voter accidentally voted for the wrong player or accidentally went over the voting limit (but I strongly encourage you to do your best to prevent either from happening).
Required Support: Players receiving at least 75% support in an election will be elected. Players need at least 5% support to appear on the next ballot.
Player Eligibility: Players eligible for an election will have last played at least 5 years prior to the election year and have appeared in at least 10 Major League seasons. If a player appeared in less than 10 seasons, he may still be eligible if he had a minimum of 3000 PAs or 1500 IP, though extra scrutiny will be applied. Players will remain on the ballot for 15 years, provided they continue to receive at least 5% of the vote, at which point they will become indefinitely eligible for periodic elections conducted by the Veterans Committee.
- Age Exception: For players 40 or older, they will become eligible the later of either 5 years after their last year of continuous play, or their first inactive year at age 45 or older.
- Death Exception: For players who meet the criteria for consideration, but die before their first year of eligibility can have the five year waiting period waived and placed on the ballot the year of death.
Election Period: Elections will close exactly one week after starting. The next election might not commence for another day or two.
Conduct Policy: Every vote is a voter's opinion on who should be elected to the Hall of Fame. It is our responsibility as voters to be respectful towards each other. Personal attacks should not be tolerated and you should notify a moderator rather than allowing an argument to escalate and further derail discussion of the candidates.

RIP Harry Kalas. Thanks for 38 great years, though I wish we could have had more.
--With Gomez joining Ferrell in our Hall it gets harder to justify not voting for Tommy Bridges. Bridges has a higher ERA+ and more IP than either Ferrell or Gomez, despite losing at least a couple years to WWII.
Ubiquitous: why just Dom Dimaggio?
I think Bob Lemon is someone worth discussing as he's not received much attention in general on the site. He doesn't overwhelm and was helped but having good teams behind him, but he kept chugging along as a workhorse.
He had an interesting start to his career - He started in the minors as a position player (mostly 3B), missed three years to military service, comes back in 1946 at age 25, and pitches 96 innings in the big leagues despite having pitched just 2 career minor league innings before that, and none in 5 years. Two years later, he has his first of seven 20 win seasons and leads the league for the first of four times in IP.
Some points of note about Lemon:
- 3x Sporting News Pitcher of the Year (this was before there was a Cy Young award)
- 7x All Star
- 119 career ERA+
- 7x 20 Game Winner; 3x led league
- 4x led league in IP; 8x in top 5
- 3x in top 3 in MVP voting; 6x in top 10
- 207 wins in just 13 seasons
- 5x led league in complete games; 8x in top 5
In an era that perhaps due to WWII, didn't really have its share of notable pitchers, I believe Lemon, due to his great reliability, stands out about as much as anyone after Spahn, Feller, and Roberts.

This is an actual case of the truth.
With Lefty Gomez elected, I've decided to stick with Tommy Bridges. Add to him:

Maglie is an interesting player. He has a 127 ERA+ in 1827 IP, with W, ERA, Pct., Sho league leaderships to his credit along with 2 H/9 and 3 ERA+ crowns. When you consider because of the Mexican League suspension (and WW2) he didn't get a shot until he was 33 its a very impressive career.

We haven't elected a catcher in quite some time. 2 catchers on the current ballot (Ernie Lombardi and Walker Cooper) are at least worthy of discussion. I think Lombardi is worthy of our Hall, and I think I borderlined Cooper in the last election.
I was wondering: what are everyone's thoughts on the positional standards at catcher, particularly as they've evolved into the present day? Given durability constraints and the physical toll of playing the position, Hall standards seem nebulous, to say the least. Is a player like Walker Cooper worthy of our Hall?
The BBF Progressive HoF has 12 catchers, more than we have 3B and more than we have RF. I think at 1B and LF we only have 14 players. I don't think our catcher numbers are really too far down. 1 or 2 of our catchers are mistakes: Charlie Bennett, Roger Bresnahan.
I am voting for Lombardi. Even if I wasn't, he is still a much better candidates than Bennett and Bresnahan. Cooper I think is in the Bennett/Bresnahan/Schang level. I'm not a supporter of Cooper, although he should be brought up into the conversation more often, especially since the other are.
I think we've been pretty tough on catchers, really just sticking to the elite (whereas we've been more expansive at other positions). I think part of it is that it's a difficult position to assess because of the hardships inherent in the position.
Lombardi would probably have been elected long ago if he wasn't viewed as a liability defensively and on the bases. I vote for him because I think being one of the greatest offensive catchers ever does have rare value, but I can understand why he's struggling.
Earlier on, I think we missed on Deacon McGuire, whose combination of production and longevity at the catcher position were extraordinarily rare in historical context at that time, and he was really a forerunner of the "modern" catcher.
Anyway, we've made it pretty clear that to make it in our Hall as a catcher, particularly in the 20th Century, you really have to stand out as one of the all time bests. So I don't think that leaves much hope for the recent crop of very good but not historically great catchers such as Del Crandall, Walker Cooper, Sherm Lollar, and Smoky Burgess. As long as we get an elite or two per generation, as we did this one with Yogi Berra and Roy Campanella, there will likely be enough top talent to keep prevent a reassessment of our standards.
Still, I think when compared to our general standards for all positions, this Hall would seem to be large enough to encompass players like Ernie Lombardi, Wally Schang, and Deacon McGuire at catcher.
I don't agree at all about Lombardi being a much better candidate than Bresnahan.

Bresnahan - 25.88
Lombardi - 19.06
All Lombardi did of note was win a couple of batting titles, one of them with barely over 350 plate appearances. They each had the same career OPS+ of 126. Lombardi was a brutal defensive player and perhaps the worst baserunner ever. Bresnahan was a good defensive player and perhaps the best baserunning catcher of all time (212 stolen bases). Bresnahan invented the shin guards. The only argument against him as a hall of famer is that his career was very short. He was clearly one of the best players in his league during his prime.
Lombardi was nowhere near as good as Bresnahan.

Bennett was no slouch either. From 1888-1888 he had a OPS+ of over 140. Combining (what I understand was) top level defense with a very high level peak makes him the best catcher post Ewing arguably until Hartnett, Cochrane and Dickey came along.
I still think we are OK with our catching standards.
But factor that is hurting catchers are their short careers. We've only had 11 catchers eligible (1871-1958, and Berra isn't eligible) so far with 6000+ PAs. Most other positions have at least 30 players.
Of course, this should not be surprising or new.Code:Cnt Player PA From To Ages G +----+-----------------+-----+----+----+-----+----+ 1 Gabby Hartnett 7297 1922 1941 21-40 1990 2 Rick Ferrell 7072 1929 1947 23-41 1884 3 Bill Dickey 7060 1928 1946 21-39 1789 4 Deacon McGuire 6932 1884 1912 20-48 1781 5 Al Lopez 6607 1928 1947 19-38 1950 6 Yogi Berra 6566 1946 1958 21-33 1596 7 Wally Schang 6423 1913 1931 23-41 1842 8 Ernie Lombardi 6349 1931 1947 23-39 1853 9 Duke Farrell 6254 1888 1905 21-38 1563 10 Ray Schalk 6217 1912 1929 19-36 1762 11 Mickey Cochrane 6206 1925 1937 22-34 1482 12 Luke Sewell 6041 1921 1942 20-41 1630
This is why I think Deacon McGuire deserves more consideration. With the exception of Duke Farrell, McGuire's career started 20 years earlier than everyone else on the list, and almost 40 years earlier than most on the list. McGuire can also be separated from Farrell due to the fact that McGuire caught 600 more games than Farrell.
McGuire's durability and longevity were extremely remarkable for a catcher for the first 50 years or so we're looking at. Throw in the fact that he could produce to, posting a 101 OPS+ over what was then by far the longest career for a catcher, and I think we should have a spot for him (though this is really a VC argument at this point).
Also, I agree with you that the relatively short careers of catchers (and typically low production) is hurting them, which is why it might be worth questioning whether we should temper our career length expectations for catchers. Though, as I mentioned above, this is complicated by the fact that we do seem to get some catchers each of the past few generations that bucks the trend and stands out in terms of longevity and productivity, thereby seemingly satisfying our need to elect a catcher. However, what I think the difference is between catchers and most other positions is that we've mostly been limiting ourselves to that small elite group, whereas with other positions, I think we've been more generous (particularly at SS, CF, 2B, and SP).
The trend is definately there (here). We are seeing more catchers being used as primary catchers.
14 of the Top 23 seasons for PAs for catchers have been in the last 15 years (1948-1962):

I seem to recall we (or I) had this catcher career issue maybe with Johnny Kling or at least around the 1900s 1910s, before being gently reminded, perhaps by Double X about the brevity of catcher's careers compared with other positions. Its interesting in its own way that this still is an issue. It is much harder to separate out the realities of the position (and its effect on career length) with what we otherwise expect from a HOF player than it would seem at first blush.
Schang, Kling, Schalk and McGuire were all close enough for me to support when they were on the ballot.
For me to vote for Lombardi, I'd have to be convinced that either his offense compares favorably to some of the 1B and corner OF players we have elected, or that his defensive issues and lack of speed were either greatly exaggerated or did not hurt his team. IMO, if someone wants to make a case for Lombardi, it should be in comparison to other poor defensive players we have elected at other positions and not to other catchers.
I might be misinterpreting, but I don't really see that as fair. Lombardi may have been a poor defensive catcher, but it's very much to his credit that he was able to catch and give his teams rare offensive output from that position. By comparing him to 1Bman and corner OFers, you'd be putting him on an even plane with them, ignoring the inherent hardships that come with catching (even bad catching) and the premium of offense at the position. He shouldn't be punished for being a catcher, but he would be in a straight comparison with other positions because as a catcher, he's at a major disadvantage to produce. Rather, if he should be punished for anything it's that he was a bad defensive catcher compared to other catchers.
Offensively, Lombardi's offense compares favorably to just about any catcher. The question then is how much does his defense (and running) set him back.
Not sure how you would adjust for position (if at all), but we'll remember that Heilmann and Kiner were also poor defenders. Their offense was more potent than Lombardi's, but he was a catcher.
Sisler and Magee were not as bad defenders as Heilmann and Kiner, but they were below average all the same.
