    Bill James 2010 Yankee Projections

Found great a good read @ iYankees regarding 2010 Numbers. Of course these numbers are if Yankees keep the same lineup, which I don't believe is the case since I can't see Yanks keeping both Damon and Matsui:

"After my fourth season I asked for $43,000 and General Manager Ed Barrow told me, 'Young man, do you realize Lou Gehrig, a 16-year-man, is playing for only $44,000?' I said, Mr. Barrow, there is only one answer to that - Mr. Gehrig is terribly underpaid."- Yankees outfielder Joe DiMaggio

I'd love to see Jackson come up and have that sort of production, particularly in center. If his defense is as good as advertised, he would be incredibly valuable as a starter in center with that sort of offense. . .

I would also be more than satisfied with Chamberlain garnering those numbers as a three or four starter (though, I'd prefer to see him closer to 190 IP). To match that value out of the bullpen, Chamberlain would have to equal Rivera's 2009 (or come fairly close).

Robertson's stuff and continued improvement impresses me, and I would be ecstatic if he performed that well next year. I can see him as the closer of the future, and those numbers would be fine for the back-end of the bullpen.

On the whole, I would be very happy with these projections coming to fruition.
This is an actual case of the truth.

I think James is a bit too optimistic on Hughes though.
We reading an article today about his problems in the Post Season. Writer says they're mechanics related which he had an issue with earlier in the year. Eiland belives he'll work out the kinks soon enough.

If Bruney is going to pitch to the tune of a 4.68 ERA I'd rather give that shot to Melancon who I feel could be very good out of the pen.

On the Offensive side. I see Alex hitting more that 37 HRs with K's going down a bit more and walks going up. Especially if he starts the season the way he's ending this one.

James is suggesting every starter will have an ERA under 4 next season? That's quite hopeful. Is he considering the occassion blow-out games a pitcher like Burnett will have through the season? I known ERA not a great statistic to tell how good a pitcher is, but I'm just commenting on his projections of ERA.

  5. I agree with Evangelion and believe that the pitching predictions are too optimistic. I believe the potential is there for each pitcher to approximate those kind of projections, but potential and reality frequently don't coalesce.

The batting numbers are pretty much just repeats of what each player did this year.

  6. The Hughes projection looks rosy until you realize they are predicting him as a half reliever.

The Damon projection seems pessimistic. Otherwise most seem pretty reasonable.

I do agree with Tony that we will not have Matsui and Damon. But I think we will have someone at least equivalent in that spot.

I also think the sixth starter will be someone other than Gaudin (not that I don't want Gaudin around).

Also agree with D Rob as the set up guy. Maybe future closer. We will surely see more of Melancon as well and maybe Dunn or DeLa Rosa.

If Damon is in NY, his SLG will probably be higher, as he absolutely raked in New Yankee Stadium. . . but I can see his batting average and on-base percentage regressing a bit. He'll be 36 in a week and he looked terrible in September and the ALDS.
This is an actual case of the truth.

  8. These do strike me as extremely optimistic. However, everybody here said the same last year and James turned out to be spot on in his predictions for the Yankees.

In my defense, most of the offensive numbers were propped up by how homer-friendly NYS - most everyone (save Swisher) performed much better at home . . . Damon, Posada, and Jeter in particular.
