Format and Rules
Voting Rules: Voters may vote for between 0-15 candidates. Votes will be made public, and voters are encouraged to post their ballots in the thread and not view results before voting. PLEASE LIMIT YOUR BALLOT TO 15 VOTES AT MOST. EXCESS VOTES MAY RESULT IN YOUR BALLOT BEING DISQUALIFIED.
-Blank Ballots: A "None of the Above" option is available if you believe no one is worthy and you wish to submit a blank ballot. This option is not to be taken lightly and it is strongly urged that it be used only after the utmost consideration, as non-votes carry great weight. Additionally, if using this option, please post your rationale. Failure to do so will see your vote disqualified.
Voting Criteria: Players are to be evaluated within the context of the era in which they played and the history of the game to that point. Players are not to be held to standards that would materialize at a time beyond the year of the current election. Modern statistical analysis is permitted but must be applied strictly within historical context not to go beyond the year of the current election. Players are to be judged based solely on their playing careers. Other, non-playing contributions may be considered to the extent that they coincided with a player's playing career (such as a player/manager).
Thoughtfulness and Editing Ballots: Please review and thoughtfully consider the candidates before voting, and make sure you have accurately filled out your ballot before submitting. Requests for editing ballots after the fact will generally not be honored. Exceptions might be made if a voter accidentally voted for the wrong player or accidentally went over the voting limit (but I strongly encourage you to do your best to prevent either from happening).
Required Support: Players receiving at least 75% support in an election will be elected. Players need at least 5% support to appear on the next ballot.
Player Eligibility: Players eligible for an election will have last played at least 5 years prior to the election year and have appeared in at least 10 Major League seasons. If a player appeared in less than 10 seasons, he may still be eligible if he had a minimum of 3000 PAs or 1500 IP, though extra scrutiny will be applied. Players will remain on the ballot for 15 years, provided they continue to receive at least 5% of the vote, at which point they will become indefinitely eligible for periodic elections conducted by the Veterans Committee.
- Age Exception: For players 40 or older, they will become eligible the later of either 5 years after their last year of continuous play, or their first inactive year at age 45 or older.
- Death Exception: For players who meet the criteria for consideration, but die before their first year of eligibility can have the five year waiting period waived and placed on the ballot the year of death.
Election Period: Elections will close exactly one week after starting. The next election might not commence for another day or two.
Conduct Policy: Every vote is a voter's opinion on who should be elected to the Hall of Fame. It is our responsibility as voters to be respectful towards each other. Personal attacks should not be tolerated and you should notify a moderator rather than allowing an argument to escalate and further derail discussion of the candidates.
1964 Guide
There are 32 candidates on the 1965 ballot - 15 holdovers and 17 first timers. First time eligible players last played in 1960 (unless qualifying under the age or death rule) or were omitted on the ballot in previous years.

I think Al Dark is a little overlooked 7000+PA 98 OPS+ and for the years listed on baseball-reference comes out above average defensively (albeit not by anything whopping but solidly so) defensively which jibes with his TZ numbers. The drawback is there is nothing to hang your hat on, as there is with say Rizzuto and defense, or Pesky's first few full seasons or Stephens traditional production in the mid to late 40s.

If Tommy Bridges does not get elected here, I'm unlikely to vote for him on the VC since a much stronger pitcher in Urban Shocker through 1960 has come close, but not been elected via the VC.

Why do you think Shocker is much stronger? They seem pretty similar to me, though I'd give the edge to Bridges. Bridges had a 126 ERA+ in 2800+ innings, Shocker had a 124 ERA+ in 2600+ innings. Neither were great workhorses in the context of their eras, though Bridges twice finished second in IP and three times in the top five, while Shocker finished second once and also had three times in the top five.Originally Posted by jjpm74

Overall, they were similar pitchers, but I believe Bridges stood out noticeably more in his era and that Shocker would have to wait behind Bridges to get in.
Shocker pitched in an era where it was MUCH harder to stand out than the era Bridges pitched in. It's easy to stand out when your competition consists of 1-2 pitchers who were elected by our electorate as opposed to an era where a dozen were either elected or received strong consideration. Shocker, IMO was a much better pitcher than Bridges.
--By my count we have elected 9 pitchers who were more or less contemporaries of Bridges and 8 who were the same for Shocker. Two who I counted with Shocker had to wait for the VC, while none of Bridges contempories haven't gotten in that way. I did not counted Negro Leaguers in either cohort. So it appears to me that Bridges had at least a tough a group of pitchers to go up against. Either way that volume shows that we have a pretty generous standard for pitchers, which should make Bridges an easy choice.
--Bridges is probably a little below our average Hall of Fame pitcher for this project, but certainly within the range we have established - and he definately would not be the worst. I'm encourage that he is at 90% in the early going, although he has gotten off to good starts before only to stagger before the finish line.

Jim, have you adjusted your standards at all to fit this project? We are heading for a significantly larger Hall than Cooperstown or the other HOF projects here at BBF. Has that lifted some of your close calls into yes votes?
We've been generous with some positions (P, SS, 2B, CF), while perhaps too stingy at others (C, 3B), but on the whole, I don't think we've been that open. Much of our enlarged size, at least compared to Cooperstown, has to do with the abundance of 19th Century players we've elected. We've elected 49 players from that period, which I'm assuming to be significantly larger than Cooperstown.
Past that, I do think we've set the bar somewhat low at pitcher, but I don't think we've been that divergent from Cooperstown, and certainly haven't made as many clearly egregious selections as Cooperstown.
--We were very generous with 19th century players, which is certain to put us at a larger Hall. Not saying that is wrong, just true. For 20th century players I think we have uniformly rejected those widely regarded as Coperstown mistakes. We counterbalannced that and perhaps then some by electing border line players outside Cooperstown at a pretty good clip.
--I'm a little surprised that we got Gomez in ahead of (and perhaps instead of) Tommy Bridges for that reason. They are pitchers of similar pedigree - Gomez a little higher peak, but Bridges the better career - and Gomez is a low tier Cooperstowner, while Bridges is a high profile outisder. That is contrary to our usual trend. That shouldn't be much, if any, a factor for voters, but it seems to have been.
We've also elected 33 out of 169 players (could do a recount here to be sure) via the Negro League Players VC and 17 through the regular VC. If anything, we haven't beat around the bush with certain candidates. Ignoring the 50 players elected by the VC, look at the 75 first time candidates we've elected over the course of the project.
That's a whopping 63% (give or take depending on the actual number) of players elected in the general election that were elected during their first year of eligibility. Contrast that with only four candidates that were elected in their 15th year of eligibility, a significant 3.4% minority. I suppose when I have more time later next month, I could make a bar graph to display this trend. The trend I noticed rather passively is that a candidate's chances of getting elected decrease greatly once they've passed the three year mark on the regular ballot.

I think our standards with 20th Century players have tightened (except maybe with pitchers), so while our Hall may be physically larger due to the number of 19th Century and Negro Leaguers elected, I don't think are effective standards are much different.
I generally agree with you on the Lopez/Bridges observation, in that it's our trend to overlook the low-tier Cooperstowner while being more sympathetic to the outsider, but I don't think Bridges was a high profile outsider on these boards. I actually think Bridges has been somewhat underrated here and thus I'm not surprised that he isn't in.
Also, not sure how much Gomez being an ace on dynastic teams helped. Postseason success actually seems like something we haven't been factoring in too much, but it could have helped Gomez nonetheless.

Doesn't that mean in some sense we did the project right, in that we looked at players in the context of only what had come before. Certainly OFs now that I think are on a par with Van Haltren, Duffy and Ryan are having a hard time look at Manush and Cuyler to name two off the top of my head.
If anything, I have come to the conclusion that we've done this correctly. We elected 79 players in their first year of eligibility, which means we've been more decisive. This has ultimately prevented a large backlog. Here are the stats I've compiled with the 118 players elected in the general election up until, but not including the 1965 elections:

That's the way I'd see it. Wasn't that the point of starting so early, and trying to ignore "future" baseball history? So it wouldn't just be another "I we were remaking the Hall of Fame, who do we think belongs".
Bumping up hoping to spur interests. We've been at 18 votes for a few days now. Bob Elliott and Tommy Bridges are teetering on the line right now. This is Bridges last year on the regular ballot and he'll make a pretty good VC candidate if not elected here.
