Tim Lincecum Found in Possession of Marijuana

    Link.

Tim Lincecum, star pitcher for the San Francisco Giants, is facing charges of misdemeanor possession of marijuana and drug paraphernalia use after being stopped for speeding on I-5 last week.

At 8:23 a.m. Oct. 30, Washington State Patrol trooper and spokesman Steve Schatzel said, a motorcycle trooper working with a laser device timed a 2006 Mercedes Benz doing 74 mph northbound in Hazel Dell near Northeast 78th Street — where the speed limit is 60 mph.

The trooper pulled the Mercedes over. When the driver, Lincecum, rolled down his window, the trooper smelled marijuana. He asked Lincecum to hand it over, and Lincecum reached into his dashboard console and produced a small pouch and a pipe, Schatzel said.

The amount was 3.3 grams, Schatzel said, which is considered only enough for personal use. Lincecum did not appear to be impaired behind the wheel and is not being charged with a felony crime, Schatzel said.

"Not unless there's something else going on," Schatzel said. "With this amount of marijuana, that's normally the way we deal with it."

He said 3.3 grams is about the size of a human thumb.

Lincecum "was cited and released," Schatzel said. The speeding citation was for $122. He is expected to be arraigned on Nov. 23 in Clark County District Court.

Schatzel said the motorcycle officer was joined by another officer in a marked patrol car; one didn't know who Lincecum was but the other recognized the name of the 2008 National League Cy Young Award winner.

He said the troopers didn't do anything that wasn't routine.

Lincecum, 25, is a native of Bellevue. He attended Liberty High School in Renton, where was the Gatorade Player of the Year for the state of Washington. He later starred for the University of Washington, winning in the Golden Spikes award in 2006 as the nation's top amateur baseball player.
He was selected as the 10th overall player in the 2006 MLB Draft by the San Francisco Giants. He won the 2008 National League Cy Young Award after going 18-5 with a 2.62 earned-run average and 265 strikeouts.

He is again among the leading contenders for the 2009 Cy Young Award after going 15-7 with a 2.47 ERA and 261 strikeouts. He was the starting pitcher for the National League in the 2009 All-Star Game in St. Louis. Last month, he was selected the National League pitcher of the year by The Sporting News for a second consecutive season.

Lincecum signed for a $2.025 million signing bonus with the Giants in 2006. He is arbitration eligible for the first time this offseason, and he is expected to earn a pay raise to more than $10 million for 2010.
This doesn't surprise me in the least - after all, the guy's on the same team as Barry Zito. I'd be more surprised if he didn't smoke the reefer.

Will he face penalties from Major League Baseball?

He's just lucky that Bowie Kuhn isn't in charge anymore.

But this is a baseball forum, so I digress.
Can't drink and smoke at the same time? That's absurd. Drinking is more dangerous than marajuana in the first place.

Unless you meant can't smoke and drive, but that's already illegal and wouldn't change just because pot is.

It sounds like he was up here in WA. state when he was caught with it. We're pretty lax about small amounts. This doesn't bother me so much, but I don't like the idea of kids that look up to him now thinking smoking pot is just that much more appealing.

Its the offseason so it shouldn't interfere with his standing in the MLB

Its not like marijuana is a PED

Maybe he just needs to shower. I heard that he has BO. Luckily baseball isn't a contact sport.

It could happen to anyone. Maybe not the drug use, but a DUI for sure. I dont know why this is big news, these athletes are young and are just as human as me and you. This isnt news at all. Can he still pitch, okay good... then lets move on.

It's not big news, but it is still a crime and Lincecum is one of the elite pitchers in baseball.

It does not seem to be a big deal, though. He won't be charged with a felony, he'll have his arraignment, do whatever he needs to do, and will be pitching for the Giants come spring training.

I don't care if someone smokes marijuana, but if he was under influence driving this would be very bad.

Nick Adenhart was killed by a DUI so this is no small thing.
But we didn't know if Timmy was under influence or just carrying it to smoke it at home so we should wait before we judge him.

That's from the news story in the original post, so apparently he was smoking it in the car.

As long as Lincecum remains an elite pitcher the Giants fans and management could care less.

Right, but how come in this day and age we feel it necessary to report on these stories. When i get a DUI it isnt in the papers because i havent won a Cy Young, but i wish they would stick to reporting on their on the field actions.

A lot of papers have some sort of police section. Even the one where I went to college did. That was enjoyable for me the News Editor.

Pratfalls of being a celebrity. Not just in this day and age, either.

But you're not selling video games and other products to kids. It's part of the deal when you take the cash. No celebrity should be surprised by it. Like it or not.

Did you also "care less" about the DUI driver who killed Adenhart?

I mean fortunately nothing happended, but under influence this is pure luck.
I hope he learn from this and only smokes it at home the next time. DUI ist very dangerous for others and also oneself.

KCGHOST is not a Giants fan nor in Giants management.

What happened to Nick Adenhart is extremely unfortunate. That has nothing to do with this case nor is it reason to demonize Lincecum. He is not charged with DUI.

Nobody here is endorsing driving while under the influence. But you can't take one worse-case incident and apply it to each and every semi-related case. You might as well pick out a spot in front of a neighborhood drinking establishment and yell at everyone leaving.
