According to Bill Center of the San Diego Union-Tribune, Edgar Gonzalez plans to opt for free agency rather than accept an assignment to Triple-A Portland.
The Padres dropped him from their 40-man roster on Wednesday. "I think this is the end of my run here," Gonzalez said. "I love San Diego. And the Padres gave me an opportunity that I'm thankful for. But my future is probably elsewhere." Limited to just 153 at-bats this season due to post-concussion syndrome, Gonzalez batted .216/.278/.373 with four homers and 18 RBI while being a liability in the field. It will be interesting to see if his brother Adrian follows him out the door this winter.
