None of the Above (Blank Ballot)
PLEASE READ BEFORE VOTING!
Format and Rules
Voting Rules: Voters may vote for between 0-15 candidates. Votes will be made public, and voters are encouraged to post their ballots in the thread and not view results before voting. PLEASE LIMIT YOUR BALLOT TO 15 VOTES AT MOST. EXCESS VOTES MAY RESULT IN YOUR BALLOT BEING DISQUALIFIED.
-Blank Ballots: A "None of the Above" option is available if you believe no one is worthy and you wish to submit a blank ballot. This option is not to be taken lightly and it is strongly urged that it be used only after the utmost consideration, as non-votes carry great weight. Additionally, if using this option, please post your rationale. Failure to do so will see your vote disqualified.
Voting Criteria: Players are to be evaluated within the context of the era in which they played and the history of the game to that point. Players are not to be held to standards that would materialize at a time beyond the year of the current election. Modern statistical analysis is permitted but must be applied strictly within historical context not to go beyond the year of the current election. Players are to be judged based solely on their playing careers. Other, non-playing contributions may be considered to the extent that they coincided with a player's playing career (such as a player/manager).
Thoughtfulness and Editing Ballots: Please review and thoughtfully consider the candidates before voting, and make sure you have accurately filled out your ballot before submitting. Requests for editing ballots after the fact will generally not be honored. Exceptions might be made if a voter accidentally voted for the wrong player or accidentally went over the voting limit (but I strongly encourage you to do your best to prevent either from happening).
Required Support: Players receiving at least 75% support in an election will be elected. Players need at least 5% support to appear on the next ballot.
Player Eligibility: Players eligible for an election will have last played at least 5 years prior to the election year and have appeared in at least 10 Major League seasons. If a player appeared in less than 10 seasons, he may still be eligible if he had a minimum of 3000 PAs or 1500 IP, though extra scrutiny will be applied. Players will remain on the ballot for 15 years, provided they continue to receive at least 5% of the vote, at which point they will become indefinitely eligible for periodic elections conducted by the Veterans Committee.
- Age Exception: For players 40 or older, they will become eligible the later of either 5 years after their last year of continuous play, or their first inactive year at age 45 or older.
- Death Exception: For players who meet the criteria for consideration, but die before their first year of eligibility can have the five year waiting period waived and placed on the ballot the year of death.
Election Period: Elections will close exactly one week after starting. The next election might not commence for another day or two.
Conduct Policy: Every vote is a voter's opinion on who should be elected to the Hall of Fame. It is our responsibility as voters to be respectful towards each other. Personal attacks should not be tolerated and you should notify a moderator rather than allowing an argument to escalate and further derail discussion of the candidates.

RIP Harry Kalas. Thanks for 38 great years, though I wish we could have had more.
Newcomer Ned Garver is one of the all-time "trailers" by team fielding support according to Clay Davenport. Poor team fielding support, measured as a rate, shows up in low DERA and high DERA+, relative to high Runs Allowed and ERA.
poor Team Fielding support, runs per 9 innings, relative to league average
Inasmuch as these sabrmetrics are valid, these are the pitchers most underrated by raw runs and earned runs measures. For Garver, part of that bottom line isCode:2000+ innings tField debut -0.69 1901 Patten C -0.63 1894 Mercer W -0.58 1948 Garver N -0.56 1955 Ramos P -0.54 1881 Whitney J -0.50 1880 Wiedman S -0.44 1891 Breitenstein T -0.39 1964 Niekro P -0.39 1940 Hudson Sid -0.37 1889 McMahon S 2000+ innings, debut since 1900 tField debut -0.70 1901 Patten C -0.58 1948 Garver N -0.56 1955 Ramos P -0.39 1964 Niekro P -0.39 1940 Hudson Sid -0.35 1961 Wood W -0.33 1965 Coleman J -0.32 1935 Passeau C -0.31 1923 Smith Bob -0.30 1977 Honeycutt R
112 ERA+
127 DERA+
Essentially this analysis rests on Davenport's attribution of runs to pitching and fielding. Here it is for Ned Garver's career. While he was pitching his teams yielded 101 runs below average, an above-average performance.
-101 runs allowed, relative to league average (negative is good)
-264 pitching
+163 fielding

After weighing the discussion on Tommy Bridges, I have determined that he does fit our HOF standards and will be supporting him when he appears on the VC ballot. Of the players I voted for this year, I am not convinced on the candidacy of Ted Kluszewski or Mickey Vernon, but voted for them this year, and would like to hear more about them and whether or not they fit our standards. Ernie Lombardi is someone I voted for based mainly on his hitting prowess. This is the 1st year I am voting for him and am unsure whether or not he will have my support when/if he gets to the VC ballot as he seems to fall in a gray area along the in/out line.
I'm giving this a bump to make it visible again.

--Ernie Lombardi is making a somewhat improbable run in his last year on the ballot. He's at 75% at the moment. I've been voting for him for several years now, but I'm a little ambivelent about his case.
--On the plus side he is almost certainly the best catcher to debut in the 1930s. He is arguably the best hitting catcher of all time, although I wouldn't argue that point for him myself. He was a key member of back to back NL champions - perhaps the best postition player on those teams (definately the best career of any of them, but maybe not the best for those years).
--The other side of the story is that he was not a very good defensive catcher - and that is being generous. He was maybe the worst baserunner of all time. And he had a short career, even by catcher standards.
I don't think his career was that short - 1544 games caught. He also played 4+ seasons in the PCL early in his career where he caught nearly 500 games and was quite the offensive force as a catcher. Given scouting limitations of the PCL at that time, figure that's potentially at least a couple of lost Major League seasons.
Lombardi though is an interesting case for the reasons you mention. One of the very best offensive catchers ever, but decidedly deficient in the catching aspect as well as running. I vote for him though as I think we've been overlooking catchers, especially compared to other positions. At catcher, we seem to be limited ourselves to the elite, whereas I believe we've elected the equivalents of Lombardi at some other positions (i.e. second or even third tier players). I still think we completely whiffed on Deacon McGuire who was extremely notable for his durability and productivity in the context of when he played, as well as Wally Schang who has a strong case. Put those two in with Lombardi and I'd say we've been about as fair to catcher as most other positions.
For what it's worth, catcher is the only fielding position where this group has yet to take anyone not in the Hall of Merit (25 total). That isn't worth much in argument specifically for Ernie Lombardi.
Al Lopez is the only retired player with more than 12 full seasons fielding catcher (12.41). There are five with 11-12 fse, seven with 10-11 fse, then Lombardi at 9.72, rank 14 "all time" (1871-1965, majors only).
Note that only four of the top twenty (bold) are older than Steve O'Neill and Ray Schalk.
We have elected three of the top twenty (blue - Hartnett, Dickey, and Cochrane), three from blackball (Santop, Mackey, and Gibson), and six others. Deacon White, Charlie Bennett, and Roy Campanella are in the next twenty (majors only). Bresnahan, Ewing, and McVey rank about 60, 80, and 140.Code:Top Twenty, fse games fielding catcher, 1871-1965 major leagues FSE debut finale 12.41 1928 1947 Al Lopez 11.75 1929 1947 Rick Ferrell 11.67 1884 1912 Deacon McGuire 11.62 1922 1941 Gabby Hartnett 11.41 1912 1929 Ray Schalk 11.07 1928 1946 Bill Dickey 10.99 1946 1965 Yogi Berra 10.78 1873 1891 Pop Snyder 10.50 1941 1960 Jim Hegan 10.18 1921 1942 Luke Sewell 10.12 1911 1928 Steve O'Neill 10.08 1946 1963 Sherm Lollar 10.04 1931 1947 Ernie Lombardi 9.72 1886 1902 Wilbert Robinson 9.60 1928 1947 Rollie Hemsley 9.49 1925 1937 Mickey Cochrane 9.47 1913 1931 Wally Schang 9.20 1915 1934 Muddy Ruel 8.96 1884 1903 Chief Zimmer 8.79 1928 1945 Gus Mancuso* 8.79 1923 1940 Jimmie Wilson* * tie for rank 20. Very generous with the votes this round. Antonelli and Dark were mainly to keep them on the ballot--if no one provides a good reason for either to be in, I will be dropping them next round.
McDonald is in a similar boat. He misses the boat for me offensively, but I can't get over the fact that he provided quality defense at three positions (2B, 3B, SS). I don't know how much that should figure into his case, but now I have another round to mull it over.

Mongoose, I'm curious: why can't you spare room for Bob Elliot or Bucky Walters on your ballot?
There are some guys who got votes who I never thought would ever, ever get votes.
I'd like Mongoose to explain his ballot since it is dominated by outliers, many of whom I had to look up as I didn't even know who they were. I'm not calling for it to be disallowed. It would be nice to hear some information about these players and what their HOF cases are, however.
* That's "The Little Professor" Dominic DiMaggio now up for election.
This year for the first time I cut below 15 votes, to 12. Seven votes departed the ballot and I dropped Al Dark after a first-year nod, leaving seven and a crisis. A crisis is a time of change but the questions is, Which change? Vote for George Kell?

Regarding DiMaggio, Keller, Maglie, Newcombe, Pesky, and Rizzuto i am voting for imaginary whole major league careers.
Above I have posted some information on newcomer Ned Garver regarding team fielding support for pitchers (#8, Garver's awesomely bad), and on Ernie Lombardi regarding career length for catchers (#14, Lombardi's not so short).

I think I agree.
By the way, I would get to 15 without George Kell, perhaps McDougald, Rosen, and Vernon.

Can't believe Bob Elliott made it. He's seems like one of those guys destined to never get quite the notice he deserves. Glad we're honoring him.
Anyone interested in a new component of this project where we vote for the games truly elite and enshrine them in a separate area (on the top floor, for example)? I'm thinking we'd have these elections maybe once a decade. All inductees would be eligible and the goal is to separate the best of the best from the rest of the group.
I'd certainly participate in what's proposed. I'm a bit surprised that Elliott made it in as well, but he did.

I was thinking that when this ends we can have a few new angles, such as biggest snubs, least deserving inductees, perhaps tiers, and so forth. It would be pretty much what we normally do with Cooperstown but would use this as our context instead.
In the meantime though, I thought we could have inner circle elections, maybe once every ten years.
