Shea Stadium - Other Teams than Mets and Jets

Does anyone have any good pics of Shea being used by teams other then the Mets and Jets?
The New York Mets - We do have a pretty good history!

    World Champions 1969 & 1986
    National League Champions 1969, 1973, 1986, 2000
    National League East Champions 1969, 1973, 1986, 1988, 2006
National League Wild Card Winner 1999 & 2000

Quest to see all the stadiums: Metrodome, Fenway, Turner, Camden Yards, The Vet, Citizens Bank, New Yankee, Nats Park, The Jake, PNC, Old Yankee, Shea

  2. I know the New york Cosmos played an NASL Playoff game their in 1976 as Yankee Stadium (their home that year prior to the '77 move to Giants Stadium).
I think I saw some picture on the net somewhere.

  3. 1975 Giants

Here are some slides from my collection from 1975 of the Giants at Shea.

    Awesome! Got any more?

I'd particularly like to see, if you have any, a shot of the out-of-town scoreboard showing the score of a Jets game. It's always strange to see the traditional home team shown as an away game in their home stadium.

That 'OFFICIAL TIME' clock must've been an add-on specifically for football games. AFAIR all of the matrices for numbers and letters on the original board were the same size, wither 4x7 (numbers) or 5x7 (letters)

Any pics of the Yankees during the Yankee Stadium renovation? Always strange to see the Yanks wearing home jerseys at Shea.

    Here y'go, son...

Come to think of it, I don't see why I'm doing this for you when you could be out there getting your own pictures. It's easy to get Yankees tickets.

    Told ya so!

I never liked those helmets with the white stripe on both sides of the red stripe. Those were some dark days for the Giants.

Is it me, or does the scoreboard in the first picture say the ball is on the 59 yard line.

I'm certain that means 59 yards from the goal line. Meaning, Dallas is punting (it is 4th down) and the line of scrimmage is the Dallas 41.... The punter is in what was the infield, so with a snap to a punter, that is plausible.

It would be a new low for old Shea scoreboard snafus.

    Cheers!

If the Raiders were playing, 4th and anything is possible. They're the only team that could be starting out first and goal and be penalized to the point they're worried about a safety.

    Good stuff; good thread idea.

I actually saw Roller Derby at Shea (New York Chiefs, anyone?) in 1973 but, well, it never occurred to us to bring a camera. Different times.

In response to an earlier post: the "official time" on the board was the "hit - error" indicator during baseball season. It drove me nuts that the "H-E" lettering was removed one year and later replaced as "-HE", and remained that way, wrong, for like ten years until it was replaced by "official scoring". (Gary, three photos, please.) Oddly, I don't think Citi Field has a place for official scoring on its boards.

Ah, yes, 4th and 37 from the 59 yard line. Tired scoreboard operator with four home teams in house that year.

There was one game I was watching where I swear they were just moving backwards. They were not far from the red zone and by the time they rang up a few false starts, holding and an unsportsmanlike or three, they were in "half the distance to the goal" territory. It was like watching NFL Replay in reverse.

And the Giants wore this ridiculous logo for 1975 only!

Wasn't that referred to as the "Disco" logo? I actually liked it better than the boring underlined "GIANTS" logo they went to afterwards. I was so glad when they switched back to the original lower case "ny" earlier this decade.

yeah that is without question one of the ugliest sports team logos ever!

I think what they do is flash it somewhere briefly... on the bottom of the Citi Vision, and on the line where the pitch count and ball-strike count appears on the rightfield scoreboard. But you're right that there's no dedicated permanent space for it.

The lower case ny is one of the best in sports. Very cool. But it only first appeared in 1961. Before that, the helmet was plain blue with the red stripe.

I always tried to find a hat with that old lower case logo on it and wore them throughout the "underlined Giants" era. IIRC, the Giants changed upon moving to Jersey, so as not to have "ny" so prominently stuck in Jersey's face.

The uniform the Giants wear now is virtually the same as those of 1961-1974, and they look phenomenal. That alone gives me hope that the Mets may yet see the light, and bring back the real uniforms.

Yup, the "NY" formally returned to the helmets in 1994. 18 years after the first game at Giants Stadium in 1976.

1994 was the 75th anniversary of the NFL so they wore throwbacks for some games. The "NY" logo didn't come back permanently until the 2000 season.

  25. I don't mind the "ny" helmet, but I miss the jerseys from the "GIANTS" era. The current home jerseys are so boring. (the road ones aren't so bad with the red numbers and striping)
