Mike D's 90 Fleer Update TTM Auto Project

The 1990 Fleer Update set I ordered from eBay on November 11th finally showed up today, and it'll be the base for another off-season TTM project.

I bought the set for $6 delivered, and also recently picked up a wax box of 1990 Fleer base (I think I paid $12).

My plan is to go through the 1990 FU set using SCN and see who signs. When I find a good signer, I'll see if he has a 1990 Fleer base card, and send out a request with both cards.

I'll run this project alongside my '88 TT & FU project. Between the two of them, and the remnants of my '84 TT project, I should keep busy for a while.

These sets really bring back memories. They're not particularly attractive, and they were overproduced like crazy back then so they have very little value. They're generally light colored, though, and that, combined with their very low gloss make them perfect for TTM use.

When talking about a set like the 1990 Fleer Update set and pulling the "good" cards, it's all relative, since the set has very little value. The set itself books for $4 in Beckett.

Beckett lists 5 cards in the set:

U68. Curt Schilling (as an Oriole!)
U87. Frank Thomas
U119. Tino Martinez
U128. John Olerud
U131. Nolan Ryan Tribute

The "big money" card is the Thomas, which books for $2. Schilling and Ryan book at $1 each, and the Olerud and Martinez RC's list for 50 cents apeice.

Olerud is actually a pretty good signer, so I'm going to send a request his way as the first request of this project. The other 4 guys aren't good signers, so I'll just hang onto them.

The 1990 Fleer Update set is broken up by team. First up is the Braves.

Of these six, only Kremers and Olson look to be good signers. That's not a great percentage to get us started, but hopefully the set contains a good number of signers.

Good luck on this project. I too like to use cards from the late 80's to early 90's since they are "sharpie friendly." I've wasted stamp money on Presley a few times. I did get him in person once, but you're right- he's a terrible signer.

Thanks, it should be fun. These low-priced sharpie-friendly cards have made for great TTM projects so far. I hope to keep doing them as great off-season projects and in-season fillers.

The second team in the 1990 Fleer Update set is the Chicago Cubs.

Boskie, Kraemer, and Salazar all look to be good signers. I'll send to Boskie and Kraemer, but wait on Salazar. I sent to Salazar on 12/1 for one of the other projects, so we'll wait and see if I get a response to that before sending again.

The next team up is the Reds.

Tim Layana is deceased. RIP. None of the others appear to be constant signers, so we're going to be 0-for-5 with the Reds.

Only three Astros in the 1990 FU set:

Of these three relative unknowns, only Rohde seems to be a steady signer. He'll get a request sent his way on Monday to give me 501 requests for the year, and tie last year's total.

Daniels looks to be a pretty good signer, so he'll get a request (my first of 2010). Other than that, we'll send to Samuel, but he seems to only sign during the season, so we'll wait for the season to begin. None of the others are consistant signers.

Heading down the list, I was amazed by the long line of low percentages. It wasn't until I hit Sampen and Schmidt that I found two guys who seem to sign consistantly. I'll send each of them a request.

Wow, a lot of Mets in this set, but only Pena appears to be a consistant signer. He'll get a request sent his way, but man 1-for-7 isn't very good.
