I'd also like to report that after this offseason, I am retiring from reporting the daily team by team transactions (and the Baseball Fever community breathes a collective sigh of relief). It takes far too long to do.

    Padres avoid arb with Adams

he Padres and RHP Mike Adams avoided arbitration Tuesday by agreeing to a one-year, $1 million contract.

He will serve as San Diego's primary setup man this year, manning the eighth inning while Heath Bell handles the ninth.

    Padres sign Jon Garland

Picking up Jon Garland is not a sexy move, but it's an essential one. It'd be like picking up Velma for your mystery solving gang. She's the one doing all the essential tasks like being logical, deciphering scientific formulas, reading foreign languages and losing her glasses. After all that work she then lets a couple of bumbling idiots accidentally solve the mystery.

Jon Garland doesn't get a lot of strike outs, he doesn't walk a lot of players, he doesn't have very good stuff, he just has a rubber arm that eats innings - like Shaggy and Scoob eat Scooby snacks. When Garland eventually loses his glasses velocity, he did his job of paving the way for our bumbling bullpen to come in and let Scooby Doo Heath Bell be the hero.

So while I don't expect to be buying tickets and yelling "YES! Jon Garland is pitching tonight!" while pumping my fist furiously, he is just as essential to the Padres completing the season as fertilizer for the lawn and nacho cheese. And really you can't ask for a better endorsement than that.

Corey Brock of MLB.com reports that the Padres have DFA’ed reliever Mike Ekstrom to make room on the 40-man roster for newly-acquired starter Jon Garland.

Ekstrom, 26, posted a 6.38 ERA in 12 apperances for the Padres in 2009, striking out 19 and walking 8 in 18.1 innings. He was a 12th round draft pick in 2004 for San Diego.

Padres avoid arb with Hairston; Ekstrom claimed

SAN DIEGO -- The Padres agreed to a one-year deal worth $2.45 million Tuesday with outfielder Scott Hairston.

Hairston, obtained last month from the A's in the deal that sent Kevin Kouzmanoff to Oakland, was the last of four arbitration-eligible players to agree to deals for 2010.

The Rays claimed reliever Mike Ekstrom off waivers from the Padres, tweets Marc Topkin of the St. Petersburg Times. He'd been designated for assignment a week ago to make room for Jon Garland.

Ekstrom, 26, was done in by hits and home runs allowed in an 18.3-inning big league stint last year. At Triple A, he had a 1.73 ERA, 6.2 K/9, and 2.3 BB/9 in 62.3 innings.
