    1974 All Star voting

--CKL owners please vote for your 1974 All Stars. Vote for first and second teamers at each position. Votes will be counted 5 points for first team and 3 for second. There will be a slot for DH/Wild Card. You don't need to vote for an actual DH, but can use this slot for the third best at another position (or positions) if you think they are more deserving. Vote for 8 starting pitchers (votes will be counted 8,7,6,5,etc, so list them in order) and 4 relievers (4,3,2,1).
--The voting will be open for one week. Deadline is midnight EST on Friday, 2/19. Leaderboards expanded to 25 are attached. An updated expanded leaderboard wil be posted when we actually hit the break.

    C:
    1. Johnny Bench, Gold Sox - Though he's actually been outhit by Fisk and Yeager and Tenace, he's played more games than those guys and has been better defensively. Could lose this spot if he slumps in the last 12 games.
    2. Carlton Fisk, Wranglers - Tenace and Yeager have probably produced more total value this season, with their defensive edge over Fisk, but Fisk has been arguably the 2nd best player in the CKL this year when he has been on the field, so he gets the spot.

    1B:
    1. Willie McCovey, Spikes - Though can't play every day anymore, he's still been a dominant hitter and has played enough games to earn the top spot at 1B. 8th in RC, 2nd in RC/27, 1st in OPS, 1st in OBP, 6th in HR, 1st in walks.
    2. Carl Yastrzemski, Diablos - Has slumped recently, and missed a dozen games with injury, which has cost him the top spot on my ballot. Barely edges out rookie Mike Hargrove. Has made only one error.

    2B:
    1. Joe Morgan, Knights - Easy choice. 1st half MVP.
    2. Bobby Grich, Wranglers - A much better defender than Carew, so he gets the nod. Carew's probably had the better offense season, when you factor in his SB's and their home parks. Very very close.

    3B:
    1. Mike Schmidt, Loggers - Breakout year for the Logger's franchise player. Great glove, leads all 3B in OPS, Runs Created, RC/27, and has yet to hit into a double play.
    2. Darrell Evans, Dust Bunnies - Bunnies franchise player having another very solid year.

    SS:
    1. Bud Harrelson, Legends - Harrah's played more, and has slugged much better, but Harrelson's OBP is MUCH better. Harrelson's also made significantly less errors and has better range than Harrah.
    2. Toby Harrah, Knights - Worst fielding percentage among qualifiers - by far - and just average range, but he has been roughly a league average hitter, which is MUCH more than most of our SS class this year.

    LF:
    1. Roy White, Diablos - Kickstarts the Daiblos attack with a .395 OBP and 75 runs scored from the leadoff spot. Has missed 9 games, putting him behind Henderson in Runs Created. But his RC/27 is higher than Henderson's, despite playing in a much tougher hitting park. And he's only struck out 14 times.
    2. Ken Henderson, Knights - Leads the league in a ton of categories. Should be an All-Star starter, but White's just having a better year so far IMO.

    CF:
    1. Bobby Bonds, Shoeless Joes - Really benefiting from the 156 HR park factor in Cleveland, but stil having a great season. Leads the league in HR.
    2. Amos Otis, Dust Bunnies - Quietly having a strong year for the Bunnies. The best of the rest, but Bonds is clearly a step or two above the rest of the CF's this year.

    RF:
    1. Jimmy Wynn, Spikes - Better rate production and defense gives him the edge over Reggie's more games played and basestealing excellence. Great defender with big time power and a very good OBP.
    2. Reggie Jackson, Iron - Not the best year from Reggie, but still very good. While he's known for his power, Jackson's become a basestealing threat this season with an outstanding 21 steals in 23 attempts.

    DH/WC:
    1. Rod Carew, Skipjacks - Could easily be worthy of the #2 2B slot, but regardless, he needs to be on the All-Star team so he earns the top spot here.
    2. Willie Stargell, Diablos - After a weak start, he's caught fire for the Diablos. The best DH in the league so far this year. Leads in RBI, is 5th in runs created, 3rd in total bases, and is 9th in OPS.

    SP:
    1. Fergie Jenkins, Legends - Big lead in complete games and IP gives him the top spot over Busby and Ryan.
    2. Steve Busby, Knights - Helping the Knights fans forget about the disappointing season Phil Niekro is having.
    3. Nolan Ryan, Dust Bunnies - Huge trade for the DB's. With just a few more innings, Ryan will enter the top 5 in career ERA+.
    4. Andy Messersmith, Gold Sox - Big FA signing paying big dividends. 2nd in WHIP, 5th in K/BB, 1st in Quality Starts and QS%.
    5. Bruce Dal Canton, Spikes - The sinkerballer's great last week lifts him up onto my ballot.
    6. Luis Tiant, Diablos - Veteran pitcher has been up and down his whole career. This year looks to be an "up". Extremely consistent going deep into ballgames. Only 3 times in his 21 starts has he gone less than 7 full innings, and 71% of the time he's given the Diablos at least 8 full innings of work.
    7. Al Fitzmorris, Diablos - ERA not quite good enough to overcome Tiant's greater number of IP and large edge in K's.
    8. Gaylord Perry, Spikes - Top workhorse this year. Leads league in complete games (by 3) and 3rd in IP. Secondary stats show he's pitched much better than his ERA shows, as he's 10th in OPS-Against, 6th in WHIP, 9th in K/BB, and 6th in Component ERA.

    RP:
    1. John Hiller, Knights - Another GREAT season leading the Knights' pen. Leads the league in save %, and is tops among relievers in K/9, and has only allowed 1 HR in 47 IP - despite pitching his home games in Tiger Stadium.
    2. Rich Folkers, Knights - Hiller's partner in the Knights' bullpen is 4th in the league in IR% (only 6 of 36 have scored), is a perfect 4 of 4 in save chances, and has a minute 0.80 WHIP in 49 innings of work.
    3. Orlando Pena, Iron - Not overpowering, but highly effective. Leads league in saves and has a 1.95 ERA.
    4. Sparky Lyle, Spikes - The Spikes don't use a closer that much, so he only has 5 saves. But he's 3rd in IR%, has a 1.61 ERA in 28 IP, a 5-1 W-L record, a 1.04 WHIP, and just one blown save.

Biggest All-Star snubs - Richie Zisk, Mike Hargrove, Jim Barr, Ken Forsch, Bert Blyleven, Reggie Smith

Stat @2B (#qualifiers): Grich (place) - Carew (place)

    Starts (25): 81 (t1st) - 71 (11th) - neither player has played as a 2B sub
    Field% (16): .972 (11th) - .964 (16th)
    Putouts/game (16): 2.31 (6th) - 2.33 (5th)
    Assists/game (16): 3.81 (4th) - 3.55 (13th)
    Chances/game (16): 6.29 (5th) - 6.10 (9th)

Interestingly enough, Carew and Morgan rate about the same defensively across the board.

Is there a file posted someplace that lists all hitter averages by position? In the Top 25, SS, for example, aren't listed. Do I need to go through each team, position by position, to select my All-Stars? I hope not, because I don't have time to do that.

Yes, you can run a Batting Register report that will do that, if you filter it by games played at a certain position. That's what I use when putting together my ballot. I'll try to post some of them tonight if I get time.

Here's a few of them. I'll try and post the rest of the positions later on tonight. For SS, C, and 3B I included only those players with more than 40 games played at that position. For LF and RF, I used 30.

As is my habit, I selected my All Stars prior to looking at anyone elses. I'm sure there will be disagreements with my choices, but these are the 1974 CKL All Stars as I see them.

    Catcher
Carlton Fisk, Wranglers: Fewer PAs than the other top contender, and he playes in a hitter’s park, but with an OPS 208 points higher than the next closest catcher, this pick was a no brainer.
Gene Tenace, Dust Bunnies: Actually listed as a first baseman, but all of his starts have come behind the dish. Putting up great numbers for the Bunnies and may end up as a more than worthy MVP candidate.

    First Base
Willie McCovey, Spikes: Another situation where he has fewer PAs than his closest competitors but his OPS is so much higher he simply can’t be ignored (121 points higher than Yaz).
Carl Yastrzemski, Diablos: Joins McCovey on the team as an original CKL draftee who still has plenty of gas left in the tank. Edges out Dick Allen because of far better fielding stats.

    Second Base
Bobby Grich, Wranglers: Basically a coin flip between him and Morgan offensively; Grich’s fielding is a bit better so he gets the nod – and perhaps a bit of homer prejudice is involved too.
Joe Morgan, Knights: Had the coin come up on his side – or if he played on my team instead of Grich – he could just as easily be the starter.

    Third Base
Mike Schmidt, Loggers: Edges out Darrell Evans for the starting spot due to better fielding stats. The offense is very similar, and both players are helped about the same by their home parks.
Darrell Evans, Dust Bunnies: Could just as easily have been the starter. A huge cog in the Dust Bunny machine this season.
This position was actually a very tough choice. Apologies to Nettles, Rader, Cey and Soderholm, who also were worthy contenders for this spot.

    Shortstop
Toby Harrah, Knights: The Knights third year man is starting to shine and is an easy pick, having played much more than Campy.
Bert Campaneris, Shoeless Joes: Veteran shortstop having one of his best seasons for the Joes.

    Left Field
Ken Henderson, Knights: The Knights left fielder is having an MVP calibre season and keeping them in the race with the Dust Bunnies.
Roy White, Diablos: Also putting up MVP type numbers and leading the Diablo surge to a first time playoff appearance.

    Center Field
Bobby Bonds, Shoeless Joes: The easiest pick so far other than catcher. Bonds is having far and away the best season among center fielders and is leading the Joes’ resurgance. Should be a strong MVP candidate, especially if the Joes come back for a playoff spot.
Al Oliver, Loggers: Edges out Monday due to much more playing time.

    Right Field
Jim Wynn, Spikes: Has many more starts than Darwin and has also proven extremely versatile to the Spikes, appearing at all three outfield spots.
Bobby Darwin, Cloverleafs: Easy selection as the backup. Would have picked him as the starter if he had more playing time. Almost did anyway because he plays in a more difficult hitter’s park.

    Designated Hitter
Willie Stargel, Diablosl: Recovered from a poor start and is having a fine season for the Diablos.
John Milner, Legends: This will probably be his only vote, but I couldn’t ignore his 926 OPS, nor the fact that the Legends would be totally out of sight if not for his bat.

    Starting Pitchers
Steve Busby, Knights: Second year starter is putting up terrific numbers for the Knights and is working on a Cy Yound season.
Fergie Jenkins, Legends: Not a homer vote, but perhaps a homer placement, as most voters will place him fourth or fifth. An annual all start and deservedly so.
Nolan Ryan, Dust Bunnies: Fireballing righty is truly coming into his own. Has pitched some simply dazzling games this year.
Al Fitzmorris: Leading hurler on an outstanding Diablos staff.
Andy Messersmith: The Gold Sox are barely hanging on in the race, but without Messersmith they would already be planning for next season.
Bruce Dal Canton, Spikes: Quietly having a top notch season for the division leading Spikes.
Jim Barr, Dust Bunnies: Helping, with Ryan, to lead the Bunnies chase for the division title.
Don Wilson, Diablos: Sure wish he was a Wrangler, but no bitterness here.

    Relief Pitchers
Orlando Pena, Iron: When the Iron starters get the game to him he locks it up.
John Hiller, Knights: Has appeared in over half the Knights games – for good reason.
Diego Segui, Thunder: As a mid reliever going unnoticed but is putting up great numbers for a mediocre Thunder team.
Ken Forsch, Wranglers: Another unsung mid reliever. Having a great season keeping the Wranglers in games.

That's why I always like reading your votes. Jenkins #2 is not a homer vote in my books. Busby and Ryan have ERA's that are a little better, but Jenkins has pitched 20+ more innings than either of those guys. And he has nearly twice the complete games of either of those guys. Not to mention his K/BB ratio of 3.9 that's leading the league by a huge margin. Jenkins at #1 on my ballot was a fairly easy choice.

I was close to sticking Tenace on my ballot somewhere, but then I noticed he's leading the league in stolen bases allowed. He's allowed 14 more steals than Bench, in 9 less games. And his SB% allowed is 100+ pts higher than either Bench or Yeager, who I also considered. All those extra bases allowed pretty much eased his hitting edge over both of those guys IMO. Just a rough guess, but if you added those 14 bases to Bench's Total Bases, that would take his OPS to .848, higher than Tenace's.

My apologies. Yes I meant Mark and Mark. Not sure where Mike and Mike came from. Mark and Mark (and several others as well) do a yeoman's job day in and day out in this league. Thanks again.

Suprised to see Dale Murray getting so much All-Star love. He's been a major disappointment so far, and a chief reason the Wranglers are within 4 games of us at the break.

--With 8 votes in now and less than 12 hours to the polls closing there are still quite a few spots in doubt. The 7th and 8th SP spots are very close with Tiant, Blyleven and Barr fightign for 2 spots. The 3rd and 4th RP battle is also very compettive. Hiller and Pena are locks, but a bunch of guys are in the mix for the other 2 spots. Backup CF is a tie between Oliver and Otis, with both also in the running for the #2 spot at DH/WC. Scott, Garr and Stargell are also in the mix for that spot.
--FYI, the WC/DH slots will be filled with the highest vote getters who don't make it at their position (assuming they have votes other than DH. For example, Willie McCovey is tied for 5th in overall points with 31 while Yaz has 29. However, 24 of Yaz points have come at 1B and only 20 of Mac's - making Yaz first team (at this point) first team 1B (the DH votes don't count toward the position ranking, while all votes count at DH/WC). An even more extreme example is Rod Carew. He has 26 total points to Bobby Grich's 20, but 18 of Carew's points came at DH while all but 3 of Grich's came at 2B. So Grich will be 2nd team 2B and Carew first team DH barring a late rush pof ballots to the contrary.
--All ballots already cast are finalized. Further edits won't result in changes to the tally. New voters are welcome/encouraged.
--Also, if you wanted to reset your rotation, and haven't already instructed me to do so and/or sent a new MP, this is your reminder to do that before games resume tomorrow.

I'm really feeling a bit embarrassed now. I considered voting for Bud Harrelson at SS but then thought that might be too much of a homer vote. Now I find myself one of only two people who DIDN'T vote for him....
I also thought, for some strange reason, that Campy had a lot more playing time. I just messed that up, because Harrelson has more and had I noticed that he would have gotten my vote over Campy as backup. I guess I was checking out the other stats between Campy and Bud and forgot to check playing time.
You see, you spend a good deal of your life gripping a baseball and in the end it turns out that it was the other way around all the time. J. Bouton

--Campoaneris would have gotten my vote too if he hadn't missed so many games. It wouldn't have mattered had you voted for Harrelson anyway. SS is pretty much set with Harrah on the first team and Harrelson on the second. Toby has 6 1st and 2 2nd place votes and Bud has 2 1st and 4 2nd place. The only other SS with votes are Campy and Conception with 1 2nd place vote each.

--The voting is now closed. We had two unanimous selections - CFer Bobby Bonds and 3B Mike Schmidt. Only two true DH's got votes - 2 ballots included Willie Stargell and one John Milner, so we have two wild cards instead, with 3 2B and 3 RF getting the honors. There was a three way tie for the 7th/8th SP pitcher slot. As all three were better supported than the #4 RP we have 9 SP and 3 RP on this year's team.
