    BBF Progressive HoF Election: 1982

    PLEASE READ BEFORE VOTING!

    Format and Rules
    Voting Rules:
Voters may vote for between 0-15 candidates. Votes will be made public, and voters are encouraged to post their ballots in the thread and not view results before voting. PLEASE LIMIT YOUR BALLOT TO 15 VOTES AT MOST. EXCESS VOTES MAY RESULT IN YOUR BALLOT BEING DISQUALIFIED.
-Blank Ballots: A "None of the Above" option is available if you believe no one is worthy and you wish to submit a blank ballot. This option is not to be taken lightly and it is strongly urged that it be used only after the utmost consideration, as non-votes carry great weight. Additionally, if using this option, please post your rationale. Failure to do so will see your vote disqualified.

Voting Criteria: Players are to be evaluated within the context of the era in which they played and the history of the game to that point. Players are not to be held to standards that would materialize at a time beyond the year of the current election. Modern statistical analysis is permitted but must be applied strictly within historical context not to go beyond the year of the current election. Players are to be judged based solely on their playing careers. Other, non-playing contributions may be considered to the extent that they coincided with a player's playing career (such as a player/manager).

Thoughtfulness and Editing Ballots: Please review and thoughtfully consider the candidates before voting, and make sure you have accurately filled out your ballot before submitting. Requests for editing ballots after the fact will generally not be honored. Exceptions might be made if a voter accidentally voted for the wrong player or accidentally went over the voting limit (but I strongly encourage you to do your best to prevent either from happening).

Required Support: Players receiving at least 75% support in an election will be elected. Players need at least 5% support to appear on the next ballot.

Player Eligibility: Players eligible for an election will have last played at least 5 years prior to the election year and have appeared in at least 10 Major League seasons. If a player appeared in less than 10 seasons, he may still be eligible if he had a minimum of 3000 PAs or 1500 IP, though extra scrutiny will be applied. Players will remain on the ballot for 15 years, provided they continue to receive at least 5% of the vote, at which point they will become indefinitely eligible for periodic elections conducted by the Veterans Committee.
    - Age Exception: For players 40 or older, they will become eligible the later of either 5 years after their last year of continuous play, or their first inactive year at age 45 or older.
    - Death Exception: For players who meet the criteria for consideration, but die before their first year of eligibility can have the five year waiting period waived and placed on the ballot the year of death or the year after death if it occurs after December 1.

Election Period: Elections will close exactly one week after starting. The next election might not commence for another day or two.

Conduct Policy: Every vote is a voter's opinion on who should be elected to the Hall of Fame. It is our responsibility as voters to be respectful towards each other. Personal attacks should not be tolerated and you should notify a moderator rather than allowing an argument to escalate and further derail discussion of the candidates.

I need to revamp, because my preliminary box checking gave me 19: Allen, Aparicio, Cash, Cepeda, Colavito, Freehan, Hodges, both Howards, Mazeroski, Munson, Oliva, Pinson, Powell, Brooks Robinson, Schoendist, Torre, Wills and Wynn.

Just tell me the four who make the cut and I'll edit the final totals at the end of the election.

No worries Ace, I print it out and go thru it first so no actiual vote yet. I was just thinking out loud. It seems 1B has a high bar with Terry, Sisler, Beck;ey and Chance being the bottom more or less and Kluszewski and Bottomley and Camilli for that matter being some prominent misses. Without looking further that means Alllen should go in, but Hodges, Cepeda and Powell won't.

At catcher we have for MLB the cream of the crop, then Bennett, Schang and Lombardi. Freehan would seem to fit in there Munson and Howard maybe, Torre most likely.

Schoendist I come and go on. Maz I am sold on b/c he was the best defensively. SS has almost half again as many as any other IF position. Well that's all my rambling for now.

                    Luis Aparicio:

                    10 All-Stars
                    9 Gold Gloves
2 top ten MVP voting finishes
                    1 Rookie of the Year

Aparicio would have likely won the MVP in 1959 had his teammate, Nellie Fox, not.

He led the league in stolen bases every year from 1956 to 1964. I think you can credit Aparicio, in part, for helping bring speed and the stolen base back to the AL and the big leagues in general. From 1960 to 1964, he averaged 46 stolen bases a year. Within that span of time, only two other AL player managed to steal even 30 bases in a season (Dick Howser [37] and Jake Wood [30], both in 1961).

Just as with Freehan last year, I'm shocked by Wynn's lack of support. I didn't think they'd be unanimous, but I certainly didn't think they any discussion to get elected on the 1st ballot since they're such high profile cases of players overlooked by the Hall.

Wynn missed my ballot this year, but will make it onto my ballot next year. He has a 59.8 WAR and there's a good case for him being a solid fit for this Hall given the fact that we inducted Earl Averill in his second year of eligibility. Great catch. Bill Freehan eclipses recent VC inductee Ernie Lombardi in terms of war and is pretty close to Wally Schang in that category. He's a high profile case as well.

1960 MVP Roger Maris might disagree with you there.

I'm pretty sure I'll be voting for Cepeda soon, probably Allen, probably Freehan, maybe Mazeroski, maybe a few others.

Dick (Richie) Allen remains one of the great enigmas. I know his story better than most- he grew up a few miles away from me, though he was about 4 years older. Incredible talent, career shortchanged due to a variety of circumstances. Still, he'll probably get my vote.
