I don't think anything has been formally set up. I'll have the book by Thursday. Anyone have a suggestion on a discussion format? Once we get a format, I believe Captain can get us a sticky??

I'm not entirely sure what you mean by discussion format, but my guess would be that we go chapter by chapter. Someone (maybe the person who chooses the book) should pick a few discussion topics per chapter and then each person can chime in with there comments/opinions/questions/etc on that chapter.

I'm sure that we can agree on how long we should spend on each chapter as a guideline. Although not all chapter lengths are the same and I'm sure there will be some chapters that create much lengthier discussions than others.

I guess that is what I was getting at. Just assuming that we would want to make sure our discussions were kept on the same part of the book, and how long we would like to spend on each chapter/section of the book.

I guess that would depend on the book and how much time everyone wants to spend on it. I don't think it should seem like work but I also don't think it should take forever to get through a book.

Gashouse Gang is 9 chapters, 291 pages (30+ pages per chapter). I don't think that it is too much to ask to do a chapter every 3-4 days? This way we get through 2 chapters a week and the book in a month. Too fast/slow/just right?

Lets keep it simple. Agree on a book (Gashouse Gang is fine with me), agree on a date to complete reading the book, start a discussion topic for each book, let people contribute to the discussion as they feel comfortable. After one month, get on with a new book and a new discussion.

Personally, I read about a book a week, but others will move through the book at a different pace. Sure, some people might be ahead of others in the discussion but they will catch up. I don't think we have to worry about anyone giving away the ending.

That seems to be a good idea to me. What about a rule about spoliers? Even in historical texts (actually, just as easily in historical texts) there's bound to be surprises for those not well-introducd to the subject matter. I'd like to be surprised, really.

Regretfully (and I really wanted to read this book), I am going to bow out of Gashouse Gang. I'm in a four day seminar next week and I go on a two week vacation to Disney on the 27th. So, I'm thinking I wont have too much time and I dont want to hold up the thread.

I'll keep my eyes on the thread for the next book - looking forward to it!!

Oh, just a thought, what would everyone think of a Facebook group for this? A thread on here is great also. Either way is fine with me.

Well I wasn't sure how this was going to be setup, so I just finished reading the book today. Don't worry, I'm not going to start asking questions until the group has finished reading.

I thought the book was put together really well. Some sports related books contain alot of rehashed material, but this one is a good read based on solid research.

I thought about getting one, but they're too expensive for my liking. Plus, there's something about having the actual books and a collection that I don't want to give up

I'm an Iranian student and am writing my dissertation. It contains a chapter specifically about baseball. I'd like to see if you could do the favor and see it. It is short and, maybe, you'll find it a little primitive. Your edition of my work in less than a week will promote the originality of my study.

I've gone through the first couple chapters of Crazy 08. It's just really starting to get good and juicy.

Yeah I longo ago finished the book. I figured after a week of nothing it was gonna be a thud. But it was a great book, I didnt like all the Time-Outs, as some of them didnt really have much to do with baseball, and I lost interest, but the rest was really great. I am also dissaointed it barely mentioned the World Series, seems to me if she were to do a book of 1908, she would have an entire chapter of the WS. Well anyways, I dont wanna spoil any of it for ya. Thanks for helping me try to revive this. Enjoy the book.

I still haven't read it. Since you finished it, do you still recommend giving it a read?

Oh yeah, totally, its awesome. Dont get your hopes up about the World Series, but for the most part its really exciting. Theres little sections at the end of a few chapters called Time-Out and the first two I believe arent rally baseball related, first is about Chicago back then, and the second is about some serial killer chick (no idea how that fit in!) but the rest is cool. Theres on Time-Out that talks about certain superstitions ballplayers back then had, really hilarious some of them. Hope you read it, its great.

I've really liked it. The author very much is writing through modern eyes, yet she is respectful of that time in history. I thim the time outs are good for atmosphere, you get a feel of what really was going on in 1908. What was on people's minds.
