World Series

Hey Sox fans, I know that this is not our World Series, but I'm actually enjoying it (not just because NY lost tonight either). Though I hate to admit this: the two best teams are in the world series this year and it should be a good one. Cliff Lee was just plain FILTHY in game one and who here isn't excited to see Pedro back in the Bronx? I'm looking forward to thursday's game more than I was for tonights!! Honestly I think that if the Phillies win game 2, the Yankees are DONE. The Phillies are better than last year and I think the Yankees learned tonight that they are for real. They are not paper champions. Anyone else watching? Share some thoughts...

Seeing the Pin Striped (illegitimate offspring) lose in THEIR HOUSE was delicious to say the least...memories of Beckett embarrasing them in '03.

Look at the strong Red Sox connection with the Phillies:

Pedro
Jamie Moyer
Matt Stairs
J.C. Romero
Jayson Werth (grandfather was Dock Schofield Sr, who played for Sawx in '69-'70)

Plus:
1B coach Davey Lopes...native of E. Providence, RI
Pitching coach Rich Dubee...native of Brockton; went to my alma mater of Bridgewater State College
Clearwater manager Ernie Whitt...played for us in '76

I wouldn't really call that strong. In the age of free agency, it's not surprising in the least to see a handful of players on one team having appeared with another at some point. Other than Martinez, none of the players listed had anything close to a notable stint with the Sox. Moyer spent half of 1996 with the Sox as a spot starter when he was still a struggling journeyman; Stairs had all of 95 plate appearances with the Sox in 1996; Romero pitched just 20 innings for the Sox in 1997; and with Werth you're going on what his grandfather did as an occasionally used utility player at the end of his career 40 years ago.

The Yankees link to the Sox is arguably almost as strong. There's Johnny Damon and Eric Hinske on the active roster, plus former Sox catcher Tony Pena is the Yankees bench coach,

Johnny Who? Is he still with the Yankees?

Werth's grandfather may not have been a star, but Ducky was a Fenway favorite when I was a kid. When you're a kid back then, anybody wearing the Sawx uni was a Superstar..a god

Not the Greatest Pedro performance, but he fared better than I thought he would. Hopefully the Phils can come back...doubtful

Only a Yankee fan would argue about which WS team has stronger connections to the Red Sox. If it makes you feel better--CONGRATULATIONS, YOUR 2009 YANKEES ARE THE WORLD SERIES RED SOX CONNECTION CHAMPIONS!!!

I don't get it.

They split the first two games IN NEW YORK, and now you're "doubtful" the Phils can come back? I know Red Sox fans are traditionally negative, so I shouldn't be too surprised, but seriously.

I'd hate to see what you'd have to say if the Phils were down 0-2. Oy vey.

I'll take a split in NY. Just as long as they got embarrased in game 1...I'm happy.

No you got me all wrong man. They were losing in the game at the moment. I feel great about the fact that they took away home field advantage. I really think the Phils can finish them off at home. We'll see...

You mean 2007 regarding Romero's service time, right?

Pedro Martinez was strong enough link with the Red Sox. The other players mention don't as strong of connection. I won't even bother bringing them up. Martinez was strong, but Burnett was stronger in Game 2. Still, I never expected 3 runs in 6 innings from Martinez at this point. He made two mistakes and it cost him. Still, cool to see him bring up a notch during the postseason.

I love how the Phils tied it last inning and then gave the lead right back. Awesome. I'm surprised Blanton isn't doing worse. I hope the Phils can rally...
