Kitty Bransfield

Solid fielding first baseman Kitty Bransfield played in 1898 and from 1901 to 1911. He hit .270 with 175 stolen bases and 1,351 hits. In 1909, he led NL first baseman in fielding.

Statistically, he is similar to George Stovall, Dick Hoblitzel, Chick Gandil, Candy LaChance, Bill Phillips, Walter Holke, Rube Oldring, Fred Luderus, Hy Myers and Tommy Griffith.

He was a member of the talented Pirates infield that lasted from 1901 to 1904, that included Bransfield, Claude Ritchey, Tommy Leach and eventually Honus Wagner.

According to Alfred H. Spink, Bransfield was "probably the most popular player in the National League."

What do you think about Kitty Bransfield? Should he be in the Hall of Fame? Did he have Hall of Fame potential?

I doubt that he was one of the 15 best players on the 1902 Pittsburgh Pirates but he did have one of the 15 best seasons.

Not only have I never heard of this guy, I've never heard of any of the 10 players he's statistically similar with.

Come on. Not even Chick Gandil, the ringleader of the Black Sox?

He wasn't that bad in '02. He was better than Ed Doheny and Harry Smith (not the archivist, ethnomusicologist, anthropologist).

Tidbit about his nickname: it was originally Kid but a reporter mistook it as "Kitty", and it stuck.

Thank his SABR bio for that.

Off the top of my head, I knew that Fred Luderus was the first Philadelphia Phillie to ever hit a World Series home run, and that Hi Myers had some impressive Black Ink. Other than that, I think George Stovall had some distinction also but cant think of what it was.

After formulating this thought I went to Baseball Reference and found that Hi Myers had a very fine 1919 season, posting 4 major stat titles including RBI's.
Stovall's career record has nothing especially distinguishing about it, I may have confused him at first glance with 19th Century HR Hitter Harry Stovey.

Gandil I was (of course) quite familiar with. Bransfield doesnt have anything in his record to suggest he was anything other than a pretty good player. Certainly not a HOF-er.

Bransfield would be the worst player in the HOF if selected. He would be behind even George Kelly, and by a significant margin. He'd have to be the Brooks Robinson of first base defense AND first base defense would have to be demonstrated to be a far more significant factor in winning ballgames in that era, as opposed to now, for Bransfield to even get a vote on the VC, let alone be enshrined.

The VC's job is to point out players whom, in their opinion, may have been overlooked or underappreciated/unrecognized as great while active. There certainly have been players that meet that description, but Bransfield isn't close to meeting that criteria. If the VC spends time debating his selection, it will be time spent away from considering hundreds that are more worthy.

Hardly today, as he was born November 7, 1938. I stand by my original statement.

I really don't get what you're trying to say. Are their nicknames Kitty?

I think what he's doing is countering the idea that today a man wouldn't have a first name that's traditionally one for a girl. Hence, "Aubrey" and "Kelly".

The difference is Kitty is a nickname. The players he named above were born with that name.
