ok here goes

my name is Dan and I am from Muskegon Michigan which is right across Lake Michigan from Milwaukee and about 3 hours from Detroit.

I was born on September 12th 1982 which makes me 23 years old and share a b-day with Jesse Owens and Mickey Lolich.

I get my love of baseball from my grandfather and uncle who always told stories about the '68 and '84 Tigers. My grandfather gave me my first glove and also my most prized possession a 1968 Tigers yearbook which I had autographed by the guy on the cover....Al Kaline

I graduated from high school in 2001 and college this last May and have yet to find that first job out of college.

my favorite player growing up was Tony Phillips. I learned how to spit by watching him.

I have always been facinated with baseball history, and especially by the phenoms like Ted Williams and Mickey Mantle.

I played baseball from the age of 6-18...and I still play softball.

I have the distinction of playing entire seasons at all 9 postitions except LF.

Hi (Updated)

O.K, this is a better version than last time!

Name: Bradley Meadows
Born & Live in: Liverpool, England
Birthday: 24th August (shared with the great Cal Ripken)
Height: 6'1"
Drink: Not too much
Smoke/Drugs: No
Hair/Eyes: Blond/Green
Married: No. Not mature enough yet, although yes, someday
Kids: Same as above

Baseball: I went to USA just over 2 years ago on holiday, watched a few games on ESPN & that's how it started, I just carried on following the games when I got home, even though it's much harder now (same goes for NFL, NBA, too)! I would love to watch a LIVE Perfect Game or a No Hitter, a triple play turned, a steal of home. I want to see all of the players convicted of using performance enhancing drugs kicked out of the sport. I love Interleague Play & don't mind the DH, although nothing beats a pitcher hitting a surprise HR!!! I want to see homefield advantage decided on the best regular season record, not the winner of the ASG.

Baseball personally: Played the game once at school, no-one was very enthusiastic about it except me!! Played 1st Base & got a stand-up triple in my 1st & only AB (therefore life BA of 1.000 ). Would love to be able to pitch, effectively & throw a knuckleball. If I played a postion it would be 2B or in the OF as I'm quick & pretty slim. I'd be good as a pinch runner though!

Favorite Sports Teams: 1st, as u may hav guessed- Liverpool FC (Greatest ever English soccer team). They come before EVERYTHING, except of course family, etc! I don't have one favourite team in baseball, although I find myself rooting for certain teams over others quite a bit. In NFL I like the NY Giants, especially as the LE Osi (2nd name too long) is originally from England. I also don't have a favourite in the NBA either. I really like cricket, too, but it comes after all of these. I don't follow the NHL or golf.

Favorite Current Baseball Players: Jake Peavy, Albert Pujols, Dontrelle Willis, Miguel Cabrera, Alfonso Soriano, Carlos Beltran, David Ortiz, Adam Dunn, Vladimir Guerrero, Pedro Martinez, Manny Ramirez, Alex Rodriguez, Jose Reyes, Nomar Garciaparra... too many to list!

Favorite All-Time Baseball Players: Ty Cobb & Willie Mays.

Other favorite sportspeople: Steven Gerrard (Liverpool captain), David Beckham (for his footballing abilities), Tom Brady, Michael Strahan, Dwight Freeney, LeBron James, Shawn Marion, Kevin Pietersen (cricketer)...

Favorite Ballpark: Fenway is classic, I love SAFECO for a modern stadium. Would enjoy going to any park if I got the chance.

Favorite TV: Any sport shows really, The Simpsons & Futurama, The Bill (UK crime drama), most detective programmes.

Favorite Movie: The Matrix, Lord of The Rings (triology), The Shawshank Redemption, Goodfellas, The Godfather 1 & 2.

Favorite Actors: Morgan Freeman, Tom Cruise (before he went all weird!), Bruce Willis, Will Smith (more for comedy value), Robert De Niro, Al Pacino.

Favorite Actresses: Most I like because of looks , so Catherine Zeta-Jones, Mischa Barton, J-LO (although never seen her in a movie LOL), Hilary Duff, Lindsay Lohan, etc, you get the idea!

Favorite Book: The Catcher in the Rye, Brave New World, 1984, gotta love those Harry Potter, too!

Most admired person in history: Winston Churchill, Martin Luther, Martin Luther King, Rosa Parks, Ghandi, Mother Theresa, Nelson Mandela (yes, I'm aware he's still alive), erm... Jesus Christ! Also every single person who has given their life/had their lives taken away to save their country (for good, not terrorist purposes), those brave people who died in the World Wars fighting for the Alllies, innocent civilians that were tragic victims of war.

Music: Basically everything; alternative, industrial (indie), rock, rap, hip-hop, R&B...

Other things I do with my spare time: Watch/Play sport, hang out with mates, go on PC/PS2, read, learn French & German, travel (but staying at the place, too), watch TV, go to the cinema, drink & eat too much junk food as I never seem to gain too much weight!

That's about it...

Basketball was my 1st love but got into baseball from a schhool friend who played in an organized league. I used to just play on the street with friends from the neighbourhood until I was 9-10. I've been playing competitive baseball since I was 10. Learned how to catch and throw when I was about 6 with my dad.

1st ML Game: When I was in the 3rd grade I went with my mom, dad and grand pa to watch Toronto play Anaheim, back when Mo Vaughn played. Jyas won the game, don't remember the score though.

Hopefully I'm good enough to get a scholarship to at least division 2 university in the states, and if I go pro well that's even better.

there may be nothing in this world i hate more than talking about myself but what the heck.

name: Jeff
age: 38
dob: 3/3/68
live: granite city, illinois (aka planet granite)
occupation: slave to the applebee's corporation
school: southern illinois university/carbondale (go big dawgs!)

baseball: i got my love of the game from my father who was a big cardinal fan. his favorite player was stan the man, he talked about bob gibson like he was a god, and he claimed to have played in a baseball game against willie mays when both he and willie were in the army. the man loved his baseball. he says he took me to game one of the 1968 series and i still have txt stubs, a program, and a scorecard from one of the most famous world series games of all time. of course, i was six months old at the time and don't have many memories of the whole thing. i do have many vivid memories of trips to busch stadium with him over the years (and for the sake of clarification, for me there is only one busch stadium; "old" busch was sportsman's park and "new" busch is the new stadium but for me busch stadium is and will always be that place where i spent so much of my youth). my dad passed away the day after the cards lost the 87 series. i really do believe that he was holding on, hoping to see one more championship. my only regret is that my dad didn't live to see the great pujols-my god, he would have loved to watch him play.

so i was born and raised and will die a cardinal fan. cardinal baseball is just part of the way of life here in st. louis (granite city is just across the river). it's in the air we breathe and the water we drink. you can't go out during baseball season without seeing the game on a tv or hearing it on a radio. you can just about go up to a complete stranger anywhere and ask them what the cardinals did last night and they'll have the answer. baseball is who we are here. i know there are great fans all across this country but, in st. louis, being baseball fans is what defines us.

favorite team: 1985 cardinals. i honestly believe that in late june/early july of 1985, the cardinals were playing the best baseball i have ever seen

favorite players: ted simmons, keith hernandez, bob forsch, ozzie, willie mcgee, tom herr, john tudor, joquin andujar, danny cox, tom pagnazzi, bob tewksberry, ray lankford, mark mcgwire, albert pujuls, stubby clapp (just kidding)

favorite non-cardinals: greg maddox (the greatest pitcher i've ever seen-him or carlton), ichiro (would love to have seen him playing for the cardinals in the 1980's), vladi, jeter, pete rose

best game i ever saw: i skipped school one day with a buddy in the spring of 85 and went to see the cards play the mets. a beautiful day, a nice seat in the left field bleachers, andujar vs. doc gooden. it was a fantastic pitchers duel-no score through the middle of the seventh. the cards got three off of gooden in the bottom of the seventh and andujar lost the shut out in the bottom of the ninth. a 3-1 final. the guy sitting in front of me was about 80 years old and had a little transistor radio tuned to the game on kmox. so i got to skip school, watch a great game live, hear jack buck describe the game, and hear stories from a guy who saw hornsby play. and the cards beat the mets!

favorite baseball moment: i once watched two no hitters in one night. i watched dave stewart no hit the blue jays on espn and then saw fernando no hit the cards on the local broadcast. during fernando's no hitter, i was sitting there thinking that there was no way that it was going to happen and was hoping that it would-just so i could tell this story. it was the only time in modern baseball history that two no hitters were thrown on the same day and i got to watch them both.

favorite baseball moment seen in person: mcgwire's opening day grand slam in 1998. the single most amazing, electric thing i have ever witnessed. busch stadium was literaly rocking.

best personal baseball moment: when i was a senior in high school, i hit three home runs in one game. each one was identical-a pulled shot down the left field line. i was never a power hitter and was so slow that a friend said i was the only guy who could turn a home run into a triple. but that was my one moment of glory. i don't know how it happened but i really did enjoy it.

other teams i follow: the st. louis blues. go blues! there are only two seasons: baseball season and not baseball season. thankfully, in not baseball season they play hockey.

favorite movies: the big sleep (the plot makes no sense but my favorite movie of all time), the searchers (the best western ever), the longest day (my favorite war movie), alien, blade runner, field of dreams, the passion of the christ

favorite tv shows: the new battlestar galactica on sci-fi is my favorite thing on tv (it's really fantastic and 100x better than the original), cardinal baseball, any baseball, any hockey game, the hot list on espnews (basicly all i watch is baseball, hockey, espnews, and battlestar galactica)

favorite books: the bible, the historical baseball abstract, the lives of the twelve caesers

favorite things (besides baseball): family, my 83 chevy 3/4 ton pickup, a cup of coffee and a cigarette (aka the breakfast of champions), hitting the green on a par 5 in two, my laptop

favorite musical artists: rem, the pixies, u2, oasis, the cure, bob dylan, the beatles, otis redding, dwight yoakum

my all time biggest pet peave: people who use the last ice cube in the ice cube tray and then don't fill the thing back up with water (a problem, it has been pointed out, that i could solve if i got a new icebox with an ice cube maker)

historical people i would've liked to have met: jesus (although i'll see him at a later date), abe lincoln (i'm from illinois-the land of lincoln), thomas jefferson, the babe, pope john paul II

people i'd like to meet: george w bush, stan the man, cindy crawford

i just want to say in wrapping this thing up that, although i only discovered this forum a few months ago, reading what you all have to say on the Great Subject of Baseball has really added a lot of pleasure to my humble existence. before i ran into you folks, i considered myself a knowledgable baseball fan. now i know how much more i have to learn and i'm really enjoying the education i'm getting. thank you all.

never tried something like this before...

Name: Sean

How BB became beautiful to me: Unlike other sports, the subtleties and nuances, the old chess on grass effect me. I also like being outside to watch a game. None of the other sports have played outside in my local/lifetime.

Born: Dearborn. With a few excurisions into Detroit, that's where I have been my whole life.

Growing up I played the (nowdays dying) backyard baseball, in those mostly now vacant sandlots. Everyday and all day. With 2-3 people hauling the big thermus of water on their bikes. At least 4 games happening in the heat of the days sun. That was my summer, fall and spring. Then we moved when I was 12 y/o (oh BTW I am now 34). My parents figured I liked baseball and enrolled me into the game......

Lots of people thus far have said how there father led them to baseball. My father coached my first organized team. Yet I still LOVE baseball. Having just moved, and not prepared for everyone being the same age, in a ballgame. It did not help as I was thin lanky and not necessarily tall. The one thing I remember about that team, was my dad, even though we stunk always had the line....we still don't have as many losses as the Tigers (this was the 1984 Tigers mind you). He was right we didn't....sure we did not have the wins of the 1989ish Oriorles. Still that made us feel a little better.

It should be noted, as I have in one other thread, that is when I first faced Derek Lowe (yes, that Derek Lowe). From then on I became a nobody on a champ team (remember I was thin) and a stud on a loser team, who pitched against Derek Lowe at least once. I went on to play intermural leagues in my later teens (17), my last organised AB yup Derek Lowe, I hit a horrid bloop single into RF. Please, keep in mind Lowe was a year younger them me and at that time was a good foot and a half shorter then he is now.

That's my BB fever, and how it came to be.

about me...

Other sports I have played (in order)...Beer league softball, Judo (in college), Muay Thai Kickboxing, Boxing, Jujitsu, Fencing, with a little kung fu and teakwondo thrown in for preperation for potential Thai kickboxing matches. I also like Yoga.

So, that pretty much means the other sports I like to watch are combat sports. I even have been known to troll the 5 olympic networks of NBC looking for fencing coverage. UFC, K1, some boxing and then as a departure I like watching Football (even though the Lions have rarely played football right in the last 10 years).

Movies, I mostly don't think these mean too much, but ones I like, all things Kevin Smith, a variety of various Kung Fu films, Jason Stathom films work for me too. I was once a "film video" student and sat through lots of ponderous movies that thinking back stunk.

Music, I love to make noise, I collect and have learned to play at least at a barely musical level about 30+ instruments, getting close to 40. Music I like pretty much everything, although Jazz and Psychedelia and the combination of the 2 move me. Gong is a band under appreciated.

Education...some college a little art school and of course, high school.

fav people...lots of guitarists you've rarely if ever heard of. Brock Sampson and Chuck Liddell.

oh yeah...fav team....Lemme put it this way I like the 2003 Tigers better then all other teams not Tigers ROOT ROOT FOR THE HOME TEAM!!!!

My favorite players..Cobb (from Study), Tom Brookins, John Wockenfuss, and Darrell Evans from growing up. Today I have to admit I like Carlos Guillen, Brandon Inge, Chris Shelton of the current Tigers the most...other teams guys I like to watch Vlad, Man Ram...Some reason I don't like Joe Crede at all. He just took over that vacated, Carlos Beltran role. A guy who just seems to bite the Tigers the wrong way all the time on both sides of the field.

Best game I have ever saw...coming up this season I hope. I do remember Glen Wilson making a great catch against the BlueJays in like 1983.

Fav TV...Venture Bros, 30 days, Simpsons, Shield, UFC.

Books, lots, recently, Short History of Everything, Bill Bryson. Confessions of an Economic Hit Man. anything by Charles Bukowski, Hunter Thompson, Philip K Dick, David Sedaris, and a few others I can;t think of now.

Hobbies, Music and playing it (or at least trying to) sometimes writing bawdy songs behind my horrid playing

Education....yeah a little college

Work....I deliver medical equipment to the households that need it. Being at it for 10 years I can map the entire metro Detroit region in my head. According to studies of London Cab Drivers, my hippocampus must be HUGE.

Fav magazines...Economist, Scientific American, Black Belt.

I can't think of more now.....if you want to know ask.

Its my parents fault that I am an Indians fan.

Back in 1954 (a full 7 years before I would walk the Earth) my parents were dating. Both of them being Indian fans their dates during the baseball season would be taking a Sunday - driving into Cleveland to see the Indians play. This was before the Interstate Highway system was in place - so a drive to Cleveland was a full 8 hour drive.

My dad was manager of the family store, and decided that when the Indians made it to the series, the store would buy tickets to the Cleveland games. Since the series opened in NY, the Cleveland games would be the middle 3, with game 5 being a Sunday. Well here is the Indian team who won 111 games, with perhaps one of the greatest pitching staffs of all time. My father, ever the pragmatist, figured absolute worse case scenario, there would be a fifth game even if it meant the Indians would lose the series.

Of course that meant the Indians would lose it in 4 straight.

Addendas:

1) Years later - NBC was running a winter replacement sports show called sports fantasy. The idea was that you submitted a sports fantasy and if it was picked NBC would film it - people were driving sports cars, and doing other strange things. Being the dutiful son - I submittied a fantasy of having the fifth game between the 54 Giants and Indians played. I understand they actuallly got two teams of players together from both teams and played a softball game.

Of course no one bothered to tell me.

2) The Erie Cardinals, then a single A NY Penn League affiliate of St Louis, held its annual Bob Feller day as the inbetween games feature of a doubleheader. I was in college at the time, and a number of us decided to go to the game. We bought a program that featured one of those lucky number promotions - you know the type that feature a free oil and lube, or a free pizza, etc. Well our number got picked. To bat against Bob Feller. After five minutes of spirited discussion it was decided that I would be the one picked to bat. (I think I was at the hotdog stand during the spirited discussion.)
So I grabbed a bat and stood in against Bob Feller. The Cardinals catcher commented about me being a lefty batter (I am one of those statistical anomolies that bats left but throws right). I swung from my heels on two of the slowest and fattest pitches you could ever see. Missed horribly both times. took a couple more pitches, but with the crowd (no doubt egged on by my college friends) calling for me to swing I swung the mightiest swing I could imagine. Missing horribly. (I have since rationalized that I could not bring myself to hit against one of my parents favorite players, and that I take some pride by the fact that I have joined the list of people struck out by Mr. Feller. I just do not tell people that he was in his early 60s at the time, and the only other contestant who struck out was a young child whose bat was bigger than he was.) FYI the Cardinals catcher - Todd Zeile.

Besides my love of the Indians and baseball in general, you will find me following the Erie Seawolves - AA Eastern League affiliates of the Detroit Tigers, as well as the Erie Otters - OHL Champions for the 2001-2002 season

Why do I like baseball?

One day in April 2006 I was vaguely aware that there was a sport named baseball. The very next day I was an avid Pirates fan and I had begun 6 months of watching MLB.TV until 2am. I don’t know exactly what happened in between to cause this, or if I should go to the doctors, but here is the rough story:

On a forum for my favourite soccer (football really) club, Motherwell, I stumbled upon a baseball discussion. During the course of it I was told that since I am a huge cricket fan and player that I might appreciate the sport and that I should choose a team to follow.

Now, following a team is not something I take lightly. It is something I need to put everything into, I need to feel some sort of connection with the team so that I can feel just as proud as anyone when they do well and equally gutted when they don’t. So, I asked my wife, who is American. Her family isn't huge on baseball, but the ones who are, support the pirates. With that tenuous link I did some reading.

The first thing that earned the buccos a place in my heart was the fact that they were pretty dire, something I can relate to being a die-hard Motherwell supporter. I also didn't want to be just another Yankees or Red Sox fan because of their global branding.

The second thing was their rich history and stories of Roberto Clemente.

The third connection was that Pittsburgh is the 'steel city' or 'iron city' and my hometown was known as the steel town. This all changed when the evil Margaret Thatcher closed down our steel works in the early 90's and effectively ruined the town, plunging far too many people into unemployment, she is a cow. However, Motherwell Football Club is still known as 'the steelmen.'

Fourthly (can I say fourthly?) I love cricket. The only similarities between cricket and baseball are that someone delivers the ball and someone else hits it, you're out if the fielder catches it and supporters are obsessed with stats. We also play in pyjamas just like you.

Lastly, I mean finally, I just fell in love with the pirates and chose to purchase mlb.tv for a month in exchange for cancelling my cable. My first live game was the bucs v cubs on April 14th. Sean Casey injured his back and being the naive person that I am, I though that was a good thing since I liked Craig Wilson. We lost 6-11.

So I watched us lose some more for another few months, and just got more into the sport. I was starting to get funny looks from my cricket teammates due to my tendency to use baseball jargon, and then my attempts at pitching one night at training.

If you think I am sad and pathetic, then I wont tell you that I received a pirates home jersey and cap in the mail yesterday. This all may look rather lame to some of you lifetime baseball fans, and even more lame to you native Pittsburgher's, but I've spent my whole life looking lame due to my sporting choices so bring it on!

Who am I?

I play for Westquarter and Redding Cricket club - Shameless website plug

I am a bowler, equivalent to your starting pitcher. I am a lefty and my 'stuff' is, a medium pace ball, an inswinger, a leg cutter, and what is known in the business a 'cafeteria ball’, which means help yourself. I am a left-handed hitter and can hit thin air as far as any man. I field in various positions and won the trophy for best fielder this season.

I maintain the above website.

Sporting Idols - Brian Lara (cricket) Davie Cooper (soccer)

Fave Baseball Player - Jason Bay

Pet Peeves - Just about anything if I haven't had coffee, other than that I'm rather difficult to annoy.

My favourite bands are: Pink Floyd, Muse, Stone Roses, 'tallica, and Pink Floyd again.

Films: Pulp Fiction, Fight Club, Usual Suspects.
Books: Survivor (Chuck Palahniuk), The Stand, Dark Tower (Stephen King) His Dark Materials (Philip Pullman)

I hope you didn't mind reading all of that. I will break myself gently into posting real baseball stuff, because I don't want anyone laughing at me.

Why I like baseball: Well back when I was around 8 or 9 I didnt really watch too much baseball, then my brother started a Diamond Mind League and I ended up joining it when I was 11, my dad was also in it... I didnt really know many players and I think my first pick I took Barry Bonds, thats really the only pick I remember... Due to needing to know players and such have watched baseball and became very knowledgeable, went form not knowing many players to knowing almost every major league player and most minor leaguers

Favorite ballplayers: Brad Ausmus, Brandon Backe, Octavio Dotel

Favorite Movies: Anchorman, The Green Mile, The Shreks, 61*, Men in Black, The Rockys, Meet the Parents, The American Pies, American Wedding, American Beauty, Phonebooth, Independence Day, Saving Private Ryan, Forrest Gump, Gladiator, The Spider Mans, Jerry Maguire, Hoosiers, Eight Men Out, Field of Dreams, Tin Cup, Bull Durham, Caddyshack, The Color of Money, White Men Can't Jump, Spartacus, the old Godzillas, The Jaws, Any James Bond Movie, The Ring, Igby Goes Down, Man On Fire, Remember the Titans, Finding Forrester, Waterboy, Any Given Sunday, Troy, Ocean's Eleven, JFK, The Postman, Return of the Texas Chainsaw, House of 1000 Corpses, A Time to Kill, Truman Show, Snakeeyes, Office Space... the list goes on

Greatest Atheletes of the 20th Century?: The most dominant has to be Tiger Woods

Hobbies: Golf, Basketball, Football, any sports really... Poker aswell, I have a gambling problem

Baseball Background: Well... started with T-ball, went up thru 15 year old whatever it was called, played my freshman and sophomore years in high school for the JV team, played Varsity junior year and did not play senior year due to me not really trying at school, and my grades being too bad for my parents to allow me to play... Would like to get a scholarship to play somewhere, but that is doubtful and will most likely walk onto Louisville, Western Kentucky or Lindsey Wilson when I transfer

My Teams: Louisville Cardinals, Houston Astros, Kansas City Chiefs, Milwaukee Bucks, Tampa Bay Devil Rays

Not really sure if I forgot anything, but I'll edit it later if I think of somethin else

My name is Andrew

I live in Denton, TX (just north of Fort Worth and Dallas)

I am a Deputy Sheriff in Denton County. I work as a bailiff, after putting in 5 years on the Drug interdiction team.

I am a big collector of autographs. I am trying to get my website up and running.

Being a military brat, I've lived all over the world.

My baseball loyalties are unique. My favorite team is the Red Sox with the Rangers a close second. I base my interest not on my favorite teams, but on the teams I dislike the most. I would much rather watch a Yankees or Giants team loose than see my team win. Wierd. I am not sure why this is.

Favorite baseball moments;

2004 Playoffs-then WS
My first trip to Fenway in 1985
Having dinner with Tommy Lasorda in 1992. (My father is a longtime friend of his)

I don't really have a favorite player, but I really enjoy watching Michael Young play. I believe that he is the most underrated player in MLB right now.

My favorite baseball movie would be either Field of Dreams or Eight Men Out.

I don't really read to many books, but I enjoy Teamates

My favorite musical groups or singers are;
U2
Jeremy Camp
The After
Pat Green

I am very dissapointed with the state of MLB today, more specifically the Rangers. I don't go to many games. I just can't spend 100 bucks to see the crap they put on the field. My family and I really enjoy our local minor league team the Frisco Roughriders. We also have season tickets for The Denton Outlaws. They play in the Texas Collegiate league, which is a summer college league that is said to rival the Cape Cod league.

I know that this won't be popular on this board, but as the years pass, I am becoming less and less of a baseball fan, and more of a fan of football and hockey. After all, Football is a religion in Texas.

Thanks. See ya'll later.

Andrew

John "Johnny" Burris
Born in Coffeyville, Kansas, early '80s.

Education: College student in Lawrence, Kan.

I came by my BB passion from the neighborhood. In my town's infrastructure, I was fortunate to live a block away from three Little League ballfields. When we weren't there, we were in the backyard of my parents' corner lot.

I really got into the history of the game in 1992. My seventh-grade shop teacher, Ken Eckelberry, had a club set up where students played Strat-O-Matic baseball (using the "Advanced" ruleset) twice a week over the lunch period. It was quite an experience -- after the new cards came out, we drafted teams and played a season of about 28 games. The division winners then played an LCS for the pennant, and then we played the World Series. I lost in the World Series my first year playing as the '92 Cubs, to the Baltimore Orioles. The next year, I drafted the '93 Dodgers and lost to the Cubs in the NLCS. Those two years really got me into the statistics and the history. (Ken told me later he had kids play seasons in the 1990s using cards from the '85 set, and the '70 set one year.)

I'm a Royals fan. The dozen of us left have formed a support group. We met at every home game, because seats are so cheap and readily available. I'll defend them like no one else.

Work: Currently a freelance writer, a student, and a mutual funds/corporate securities rep for Boston Financial Data Services.

Favorite ballplayers of my era: Tom Glavine, George Brett, Pedro Martinez, Bo Jackson, Frank White, Dan Quisenberry, Mike Sweeney, Glenallen Hill, Joe Randa, Mark Teahen.

Favorite ballplayers of any era: "Toad" Ramsey, Walter Johnson, Christy Mathewson, Joe Cronin, Babe Ruth, Satchel Paige, Stan Musial, Mickey Mantle, Sandy Koufax, Herb Score, Mike Schmidt, Brooks Robinson.

Music I'm predisposed to Like: Jazz, hip-hop, hard rock, the panoply of "alternative," soul, blues, classical.

My recommendations per these groups:
Jazz: Miles Davis (with Gil Evans? even better!), John Coltrane, Thelonious Monk, Tom Scott, Louis Armstrong.
Hip-hop:: OutKast, Gnarls Barkley, Talib Kweli, Mos Def, Common, The Roots, Sage Francis, Saul Williams. Basically, I enjoy socially constructive hip-hop.
Hard rock: Rage Against The Machine, The Toadies, Red Hot Chili Peppers, Pearl Jam, Foo Fighters, The Strokes.
Alternative: The High Speed Scene, Death from Above 1979, Cake, Rise Against, Avenged Sevenfold, Arctic Monkeys, Depeche Mode.
Soul, blues: B.B. King, the whole Kansas City blues scene.
Classical: Bach's "Well-Tempered Clavier," Chopin's "Revolutionary Etude," and the works of Aaron Copland.

I don't think early U2 (up to and including "War") falls into the above groups, but I highly recommend that period.

Music I Don't Care For: Country, pop punk, "manufactured talent" (e.g., the advent of "boy bands" in the late-1990s).

Greatest Athletes Ever: Pele, Jesse Owens, Muhammad Ali, "Irish" Micky Ward, Michael Johnson, Babe Didrikson Zaharias, Cathy Freeman, Bo Jackson, Edwin Moses.

Favorite Basketball Players: Maurice Stokes, John Havlicek, Larry Bird, Chris Jackson (later Mahmoud Abdul-Rauf), Dan Majerle, Muggsy Bogues, Nick Collison, Kirk Hinrich, Dwayne Wade.

Favorite Football Players: Jim Brown, Gale Sayers, Walter Payton, Bo Jackson, Joe Montana, John Taylor, Thurman Thomas, Priest Holmes, Dante Hall.

Favorite Sports Books:

As a kid, I enjoyed the "Inside Baseball" series by Bruce Weber and "In the Year of the Boar and Jackie Robinson" by Bette Bao Lord, the latter being the best children's book I ever read.

Now:

"To Absent Friends" by Red Smith
"Baseball's Hall of Fame" by Ken Smith (I have the 1952 hardcover)
"Baseball in America" by Robert Smith
"The Glory of Their Times" by Lawrence S. Ritter
"The New Historical Baseball Abstract" (2001) by Bill James
"The Politics of Glory" by Bill James (later retitled/re-released)
"Ted Williams" by Leigh Montville
Any old Reach or Sporting News yearly, pre-WWII
Either Cobb tome by Stump
The original Chip Hilton sports series (get the remakes out of my sight!)
"Sparkplug of the Hornets" by Stephen Meader, the best sports fiction book I've ever read

My favorite baseball movies:

Chronologically:

1. Alibi Ike (1935) -- with Joe E. Brown doing a Victory Faust impression.
2. Pride of the Yankees (1942) -- Ruth plays himself.
3. Bang the Drum Slowly (1973) -- a much better version of the 1966 TV film.
4. The Bingo Long Traveling All-Stars & Motor Kings (1976) -- I have a soft spot for this movie.
5. The Natural (1984) -- You've seen it.
6. Field of Dreams (1989) -- You've seen it.
7. The "When It Was A Game" trilogy (1992, 1993, 1998) -- Just a joy to watch.
8. For Love of the Game (1999) -- I love this mediocre movie.
9. 61* (2001) A somewhat-reasonable attempt to portray Maris.
10. The Rookie (2002) -- You've seen it.

My hometown's links to baseball:

Coffeyville, Kansas is a town of approximately 10,000 along the Kansas-Oklahoma border, in the southeast corner of the state. Of note:

1. Paul "Shorty" Desjardien, a member of the College Football Hall of Fame, was born on Aug. 24, 1893 in Coffeyville. A consensus All-American center for the University of Chicago football team in 1913, he plays one game for the Cleveland Indians in 1916. The Sporting News indicated the Indians thought he had a bright future; apparently, this bright future included playing for the Chicago Tigers in the NFL.
2. Joe Tinker plays minor league baseball in Coffeyville, 1899. Bill James mentions this in passing in "The Politics of Glory." I am headed back home this weekend to hit the microfilm up some more before I post about it.
3. Walter Johnson, born in Humboldt, lives in the area as a child. He had an offseason home in Coffeyville during his Senators playing career. The Dalton Museum in Coffeyville as a special exhibit on The Big Train. Forest Park in Coffeyville was later renamed Walter Johnson park. There's a large mural of Johnson on the side of my hometown barber shop. A post on this particular subject is coming before the end of the year.
4. Rudy May, who had a 152-156 career record in 16 years for the Angels, Yankees, Orioles, and Expos, was born in Coffeyville in 1944 and spent much of his childhood there. He threw a one-hitter in his first major league appearance. He was traded by the Yankees midway through '76 and brought back to them in 1980, so he missed out on a chance at a few rings.
5. Chuck Oertel (1958) and Russ McGinnis (1992-1995) were from Coffeyville.
6. Tom Greenwade, a scout for the Yankees, first saw Mickey Mantle play in an old KOM league game in Coffeyville. Mantle was playing for the Independence Yankees at the time.

Coffeyville has a really rich history of minor league baseball through the early 1950s; I got to research it in great detail while editing the newspaper.

-------------------------------------------------------

NOTE: Per RuthMayBond (and elsewhere online), John Durham (who played in 1902 for the White Sox) died in Coffeyville in 1949. I'll do some research to see if he was just passing through or had settled there.

NOTE 2: Bill, I'll post in the official opinions thread before the week is out.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Catcher24 responds:
Then moved to California (southern), then back to Coffeyville later in life, as you mention. I just finished reading the autobiography of Johnson written by his grandson, Henry Thomas. He went backt to Coffeyville every off season, as you mention, for many years (finally did move to the Washington, DC area later in life). The book mentions he played for the Coffeyville town team against another town team each fall, apparently a tradition, and frequently bringing along some other players to partake. I believe being from that area you would enjoy reading the book.
-----------------------------------------------------------------
John continues:
This has been pointed out to me before. I confess I don't own a copy of Thomas's book, but I have seen it before and skimmed through it.

There are a couple of panoramic photos I know of where the Coffeyville town team is playing the Caney town team, where Johnson is standing in the center. I believe these were taken in 1920. These appear in "A Pictorial History of Coffeyville, Kansas, 1992" (1992, Lechliter, limited release) -- when I head home for Fall Break this weekend, I'll grab my parents' copy and scan them for the Fever. I do know that in that particular exhibition, Johnson did not pitch.

I'm working on some material for a Walter Johnson/Coffeyville ties thread.

I know this is a little off baseball (although I am sure lots of people drink wine at ball games so this is hint for those who do ) but I have been told by a number of wine makers that on hot days red wine should be chilled to take the heat off it. The optimum temp for drinking red wine is around 15 deg C (59 deg F). When it is at too high a temperature the alcohol rises and the flavour of the wine reduces. I tell that to many people who come into the bottle shop (liquor store) in which I work or when I am conducting a wine tasting, and get some strange looks but when I explain it they seem to understand. I have had people come back and thank me for the hint.

At the moment I have a bottle of 2003 Shiraz (Syrah) in the fridge....after all it is summer here and it needs to be cooled a little.

We're buying lots of good Australian wine here in Texas. It always gets good reviews. Mmmm -- 2003 Shiraz.... Uh, yeah. That would be the 2003 Shirazes, who played in that independent league in Alaska. They made the playoffs that year with JD Drew's little brother holding out on his MLB contract. Drank some great wine after they won. An excellent bottle of Ripple, I believe.

Employment:
10 years in the drug & alcohol addictions field/social work

Family: Wife of 9 years

Best Friend: My wife

Baseball & sports career: I began playing organized baseball at the age of 7. From that time until the age of 17 when I stopped playing, my father was my baseball coach for all but 1 year. I played primarily catcher but also played the outfield and second base. I played the outfield when I first started playing because I was the only one on the team that could catch a fly ball. I played catcher for two reasons: 1. I always loved the strategy of the game & 2. I enjoyed being involved in every pitch.

Side note about my father as a coach: My father was great as a coach and coached how everyone should – he taught the game and didn't care about winning and losing. He was more concerned that myself and the other kids learned the game correctly and had fun. Example: Every year the local league would hold a draft, where each coach "drafted" their players. My father always drafted me first for obvious reasons. Then he would draft another kid, who was terrible. He couldn't catch, barely throw, and didn't hit much. But my father drafted him every year because he knew that the kid would show up for all games and practices and my father liked his dedication. This kid and I later became good friends and continue our friendship to this day. One thing that my friend still talks about to this day is the first time that my father allowed him to pitch because it was always something that my friend wanted to do. My father simply told him to throw it over the plate and let the kids hit the ball. The defense would do the rest. He pitched a complete game shutout, giving up three hits and walking none. I was the catcher and like to think that I called a good game.

I stopped playing baseball when I realized that I wasn't going to be a MLB player like I wanted. I then began to run track in high school and was elected to the all-county, all-state, and all-New England teams my Junior and Senior years running the 100, 200, & 400 meter races as well as the respective 4 by teams. Then I went to college and discovered females and alcohol. And the rest is history. Never played any other organized sports.

Favorite Baseball Players: Jackie Robinson, Lou Gehrig, Ted Williams, Carlton Fisk, Tom Seaver, Jerry Koosman, Jerry Grote, John Stearns, Cal Ripken, Jr., Roy Campenella, Gil Hodges, Buck Leonard, Satchel Paige, Josh Gibson, Craig Skok, Jerry Remy, Bob Stanley, Dave Magadan, Lenny Dykstra, Howard Johnson, Kevin McReynolds, David Wright, Jose Reyes, Tom Glavine, Greg Maddux, Ryan Howard, Aaron Rowand, Bobby Doerr, Johnny Pesky, George Kell, and many others that I am currently forgetting.

Favorite Artists: Dave Matthews Band (DMB, Duh), Shame (local band), Jack Johnson, John Mayer, Bare Naked Ladies, Led Zepplin, Bob Marley, Eric Clapton, Louie Armstrong, Frank Sinatra (seriously), Mozart (again seriously), Beethoven (see Mozart), Chopin (see Mozart again), De La Soul (don't really know why, just do)

Favorite Books: I read just about anything, depending on my mood. Mostly I like the classics such as Mary Shelley's Frankenstein, Dracula, Dr. Jekyll & Mr. Hyde, mostly anything by Stephen King especially The Shining, The Girl Who Loved Tom Gordon, The Green Mile, The Dreamcatcher, anything about the Vietnam War, and anything about baseball especially the Brooklyn Dodgers (The Boys of Summer, The Duke of Flatbush, Jackie Robinson & Me), The Homerun that Changed America (about Aaron's homerun chase in 1973/74), Now Batting for the Yankees, and anything about the minor leagues.

Favorite Movies: Don't really have many but some movies that I will watch again and again are The Natural, Braveheart (there are rumors in my family that William Wallace is a distant relative, but I don't believe that they are true), Glory

Favorite Teams: NY Mets, NY Jets, NY Rangers (but I haven't followed hockey much since the strike/lockout) & Michigan Wolverines (as a kid I loved the look of their uniforms and have become a rabid fan ever since especially since I live in the heart of Penn State territory)

Favorite TV: Not many but the ones that I watch religiously include Dirty Jobs (makes me laugh), American Chopper (again makes me laugh), House, Prison Break, and any baseball game.

My bio: I grew up in a middle class family with my parents, who just celebrated 40 years of marriage, and my two older brothers (we're all 3 years apart). Father was a college graduate who worked as a pharmaceutical salesman for 20+ years until he was forced out for ageism and now owns his own business. My mother was a high school graduate who worked as a teacher's assistant while I was a kid. Both were born and raised in The Bronx (Parkchester). Graduated high school and went to college in Wilkes-Barre, PA, which is where my mother's family is originally from and still have family there.

While at college, several things happened. I fell in love my freshman year with a girl who I would later become engaged to. We became engaged the year that both of my parents lost there jobs due to ageism (father) and company moving out of state (mother). Because of their age and company's not willing to hire people in their 50's, my parents moved to Atlanta, GA. At the time, they couldn't continue to help pay for college, so I took a year off from college and moved to Atlanta with my parents and took a year off from college.

During this time, I was a lost soul and was "experimenting" more than I should. I was waiting tables full time at a country club and working part time at a sports card store. One Sunday, while working at the sports card store, a woman walked in looking for cards of Craig Skok (he only has one 1979 Topps). The store didn't have any but I had one in my personal collection, which I stated she could have the following week when I was working. When she returned, I found out that she was Craig's wife and that they were working with MLB Players Alumni Association and Muscular Dystrophy Association on a two day charity event. She invited me to join the planning committee, which I did. I worked very hard for 6 months helping with this and helped to raised over $150,000 for the two days. Because of the experience, I rededicated myself to my education and began my career in the human services/social work field. I was able to discover myself and find my way. I continue to keep in touch with Craig and his wife with a sense of gratitude for helping to find my way.

I graduated from college, married, and have enjoyed a rewarding career. I currently work for a medical center that is a government facility dedicated to care for military veterans.

My hero: Simply, my father. My mother played a big role in my life, but I have always looked up to my father. He is the one that instilled my love and passion for baseball. Baseball was the basis for our relationship for many years because my father was never the type to show his emotions openly. So, we relied on baseball to bridge that gap. My father would tell me stories of the greats that he grew up with in The Bronx. He would tell me about the Yankees that he saw play including Mantle, Ford, Berra, Howard, et al. and how he and his friends would ride the train to Yankee Stadium and get into the games after the 2nd inning for 10 cents. He would always sit in RF when the Yankees played the Tigers so he could watch his favorite player, Al Kaline.

My father and I would watch endless games and I would ask him question after question that he would answer. My first in person game was Brewers-Yankees at The Stadium. I don't know who pitched or who won. I didn't care because I didn't like the Yankees. My first game at Shea Stadium was May 22, 1983, my birthday. Tom Seaver was pitching and this was the year that Tom Terrific returned from his exile in Cincinnati. It was batting helmet day and I thought that was so cool. Since that time, I have bled Orange & Blue and later enjoyed the 1986 World Series Championship.

My father taught me how to throw, catch and hit. He and I would have endless catches. I remember eating dinner and then asking my father to have a catch. He would always look at my mother, who would say "Go ahead. I'll clean up." I always loved her for that. My father would eventually put a flood light in the backyard so that we could have catches until 9 or 10 at night.

When my father lost his job after 20+ years due to ageism, my parents moved to Atlanta. My father had some difficulty finding a job and took a job as a salesman in a large department store during the Christmas season so that he had money to buy Christmas gifts. That year he gave me a tie. Years later, my wife asked if she could throw the tie out because it was ugly. I told her the story behind it and she took it later that day to be dry cleaned and has ensured it has had a place in our home ever since. She's wonderful. Several years later my father started his own business that he recently sold for a nice profit.

My father has taught me many things including the meaning of family and the importance of your wife being your best friend. The importance of hard work and determination. The importance of treating people like human beings and never backing down from your beliefs and values.

When I was 18 and a freshman in college, I wrote my father a letter stating everything that I felt for him but never said. I told him that if I were to be half the husband, half the father, and half the man he is, I would consider myself to be very successful. My father later called me when he received the letter and that was first time that he told me that he loved me. Now, we don't end a conversation without those words being said. We speak at least two times a week despite living 600 miles apart. Years later, my mother told me that my father cried when he read the letter and still has the letter.

A final note: Because of my work with military Veterans, especially Veterans returning from Iraq & Afghanistan, I want to thank all of you that have served in the military, are currently serving in the military or have/had loved ones that served/are serving in the military. I am truly grateful for the things that I enjoy everyday.

That's my story and I've grown quite attached to it.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Catcher-

Yes, my wife is the same girl I was engaged to in college. Believe it or not, she hated baseball when we first met, but agreed to a weekend getaway to Cooperstown when we first started dating. When we were about half way through the museum and were standing in front of the Bic pen Catfish Hunter used to sign the first 1 million dollar contract, she asked "Who would save all of this crap?" Everyone looked at her in disgust as I simply walked away and pretended that I didn't know her. She has since become a great student of the game but is unfortunately a Braves' fan. She does however have a crush on David Wright, but so do I.

DMBfan is the screen name that I use on most post and stands for Dave Matthews Band fan, which I am an avid fan of since my days in college.

Thanks for the feedback.

Okay, here we go. I procrastinated this enough.

Name: Richard C. Castle
Age: 21
Born: May 30th, 1985
Lived in Tacoma my entire life, save for 6 months in Seattle.

School:
Hunt Middle School
Franklin Pierce High School
University of Washington (Both Seattle and Tacoma Campuses) This is where I am studying now. I'm a junior, majoring in Political Science/Urban Studies.

Family: Two Brothers, one was good at baseball but had no interest in it, the other had no interest in it, and that's a good thing . My Mom hates baseball, or at least she claims she does (I think secretly she enjoys the game). My Dad, well he's the reason I love baseball. The first time my Dad went to a Major League game was in 1969. The Seattle Pilots. Fell in love with the team, locked himself in his room when they went to Milwaukee. In 1977, Major League Baseball redeemed themselves by giving him the Seattle Mariners, and he's been a big fan ever since.

Baseball: I played little league, but couldn't hit a lick. I was a pitcher and did okay, but I decided to focus on football.

Favorite Baseball Players: All-Time: Edgar Martinez, Dan Wilson, Candy Cummings, Honus Wagner, Ross Barnes, Mordecai Brown, and Christy Mathewson to name a few.
Current: David Eckstein, Ichiro Suzuki, Raul Ibanez, Albert Pujols, Roy Oswalt, an Eric Byrnes.

Favorite Artists: The Clash, The Sex Pistols, Queen, David Bowie, Jimi Hendrix, The Who, The Beattles.

Favorite Movies: Mr. Smith Goes to Washington, The Shawshank Redemption, The Full Monty, Field of Dreams.

Favorite Teams:
Baseball-Seattle Mariners
Football-Seattle Seahawks
Basketball-Seattle SuperSonics
Ultimate Frisbee-Seattle Riot
(Sensing a trend?)

If you are noticing that tearforamariner and I live remarkably close to eachother, it's because we are roommates. About a month ago, I asked him what the best sites were on the internet for baseball. He told me about Fever. He hadn't been here for a while because he'd been busy, but when he saw all of the great conversations and discussions I was having, it brought back memories or something, and he came back. Interesting how life works.

Unlike most other team sports, in which teams usually have an equivalent number of players on the field at any given time, in baseball the hitting team is at a numerical disadvantage, with a maximum of 5 players and 2 base coaches on the field at any time, compared to the fielding team's 9 players. For this reason, leaving the dugout to join a fight is generally considered acceptable in that it results in numerical equivalence on the field, and a fairer fight.

Not to be an overbearing bunghole (the place you would tap an old wooden beer keg) or anything. But I really like this, and love to look at all the people that come here that, may or may not post thoughts on other forums. But, is there anyway you could link this thread into a few other forums, at least for a little amount of time (perhaps every team forum???, although, that might be Mucho Work?). At least in current events, as I think that is the most active forum on the site? I would love to learn what people have to say about themselves, who I am in some sort of way, communicating with regularly. There are people on the site (Racosun for example), that do not know or have not filled their "Who Are You?" thing....it only makes the site better to learn of the people.

If it is asking to much....ignore and delete. If you think the idea, has merit. Ignore this post and do what you see fit....oh yeah, and delete.
