    Tris Speaker in the OF.

You need to have "Smokey" Joe Wood as a starter, probably #1 (if you use his 1912 stats)

Maybe Babe Ruth and Mel Parnell pitching too.
    1903 - 1912 - 1915 - 1916 - 1918 - 2004 - 2007 - 2013

What about Nomar or Rico Petrocelli for that last IF spot?

Jimmie Foxx had some years for Boston (including an MVP). Mo Vaughn was nice at 1B.

Jim Rice or Manny Ramirez for the final OF spot? Tris Speaker played long enough in Boston as well. Tony Conigliaro? Reggie Smith had some nice seasons for Boston too.

Varitek is probably as a choice as any for the backup C spot.

Clemens should be on that list. Babe Ruth maybe as a pitcher? Lefty Grove had a number of good seasons for Boston. Dutch Leonard? Certainly Joe Wood. Mel Parnell?

DoubleX, I don't believe he's using active players.

Though, is Mo Vaughn even retired? I would go with Jimmy Fox at 1B over Mo Vaughn any day. Jimmy Fox did play for the Red Sox for six years. Playing on the Red Sox from 1936 to 1942.

Sorry I can't much of help. I'm not too knowledge about the past of baseball as I am with current events of baseball. I would go with Babe Ruth being one the roster as a pitcher.

I would give Dennis Eckersley some consideration, too.

Perhaps consider Jimmy Collins for your last IF position, and consider Tony Pena for the other catcher.

Thanks for the responses. Also, thanks for reading about the part that said no active players will be on the roster. I'm making the roster for an all-time team league for teams in existence in 1901.

              Comments so far:

Ruth- he's on the Yankees team for obvious reasons
              Leonard- he's on the Senators
Grove- also on the Yankees, I believe
Speaker- might be on the Indians, but if not, he'll be on the Sox
Wood- will put him on the Sox
Eckersley- on the A's; very hard decision to make but he did more with the A's
Pena- I think I have him on another team but I can't remember which one off the top of my head

If you check my thread in Fantasy Baseball and Gaming, you'll see the whole project and the other rosters. In there I just posted that I'll put Rice and Collins on the team when I get back to importing the players into the league.

Nice choices, wish I thought of them.

Ah, I see how you're doing things now. You probably have Pena on the Pirates and Grove on the Athletics (not to be confused with Lefty Gomez who you might have on the Yankees .

This would be my starting lineup for Boston' All-Time team, excluding active players and including players that are identified with the Sox more than any other team).

C: Carlton Fisk - He actually caught more games for the White Sox (1236 to 990, but I don't know many people who would argue him not being part of the Red Sox)
                    1B: Mo Vaughn
                    2B: Bobby Doerr
                    SS: Joe Cronin
                    3B: Wade Boggs
                    LF: Carl Yastrzmeski
                    CF: Fred Lynn
                    RF: Dwight Evans
                    DH: Ted Williams

                    SP1: Cy Young
                    SP2: Luis Tiant
                    SP3: Joe Wood
                    SP4: Bill Lee
                    RP: Dick Radatz
                    CP: Bob Stanley

Now being a Yankee fan, I have to ask (sorry)...How do you think that team would do against this team?

                    C: Yogi Berra
                    1B: Lou Gehrig
                    2B: Joe Gordon
                    SS: Phil Rizzuto
                    3B: Graig Nettles
                    LF: Mickey Mantle
                    CF: Joe DiMaggio
RF: Dave Winfield - Some may count him as a Padre, but he played more games as a Yankee.
                    DH: Babe Ruth

                    SP1: Whitey Ford
                    SP2: Red Ruffing
                    SP3: Lefty Gomez
                    SP4: Ron Guidry
                    RP: Sparky Lyle
                    CP: Goose Gossage

but active players (Manny, Clemens, Pedro; Jeter and Rivera) would strengthen both of those rosters

It certainly would. Could this rotation:

                        SP1: Roger Clemens
                        SP2: Cy Young
                        SP3: Pedro Martinez
                        SP4: Luis Tiant

                        Shut down this lineup?

                        SS: Derek Jeter
                        CF: Joe DiMaggio
                        DH: Babe Ruth
                        1B: Lou Gehrig
                        LF: Mickey Mantle
                        RF: Dave Winfield
                        C: Yogi Berra
                        3B: Graig Nettles
                        2B: Joe Gordon

It would be a very, very interesting battle. You've got 2 of the 5 best pitchers of all-time, and 3 of the top 12-15 pitchers of all-time, against a true murderers row with 4 of the best 12-15 positional players of all-time batting 2-5.

I would put Wood in the rotation before Tiant. Maybe make Tiant the 5th starter after Wood.

                          But thats just me.

Regardless, it would be fun to watch!
