  • Boston Red Sox Music

Alright my friends. As most of you know I am a huge music buff. Well I am looking for some help on this one. I want to make an Essential Red Sox Music CD. I need to know from you the fans though... what are the essential songs? I will admit i am looking for stuff they play at games, any music that just screams Boston, or Red Sox. Someone on this sight previously was trying to build a Cd, but I don't think they ever finished it. This is something I want to have done in a few weeks time if I can get enough music to fill a CD if not maybe even more. Once I have compiled all the data I will go through and create the CD/CD's and will post the tracklist/tracklist's which ever it may be

What about Sweet Valentine and that song by the Dropkick Murphy's (I don't know the title)?

      Tessie (the Dropkick Murphys song)!

      I love that song!

(and isnt it Sweet Caroline, by Neil Diamond))

Here's a thread that covers this question.
"I believe in the Church of Baseball. I tried all the major religions and most of the minor ones. I've worshipped Buddha, Allah, Brahma, Vishnu, Siva, trees, mushrooms and Isadora Duncan. I know things. For instance, there are 108 beads in a Catholic rosary and there are 108 stitches in a baseball. When I learned that, I gave Jesus a chance." ~Ron Shelton, from Bull Durham

The original "Tessie" was popular at the turn of the last century, and the Boston fans tweaked it to heckle Honus Wagner..."Tessie you know I love you madly" became "Honus why do hit so badly". I don't think that the DMs really used any of the original lyric.

I can only find the lyrics to the chorus of the original Tessie, but I have heard the whole thing. The Dropkick Murphys adapted some of the original lyrics into their song about the song. Here's the chorus of the old one:

Tessie, you make me feel so badly
            Why don’t you turn around
Tessie you know I love you madly
Babe, my heart weighs about a pound
Don’t blame me if I ever doubt you.
You know I couldn’t live without you
Tessie, you are my only, only, only.

And the chorus of DM's version:

            "Tessie," "Nuff Ced" McGreevy shouted,
"We're not here to mess around
Boston, you know we love you madly
Hear the crowd roar to your sound
Don't blame us if we ever doubt you
You know we couldn't live without you
Tessie, you are the only, only, only."

Of course, as the song goes on, "Tessie, you are the only, only, only" becomes "Boston, you are the only..." and then "Red Sox, you are the only..."

There are some other lines in the original about a "maiden with sparkling eyes", lyrics again reflected in the new version.

              Here are the DM's lyrics:

Tessie is the Royal Rooters rally cry
Tessie is the tune they always sung
Tessie echoed April through October nights
After serenading Stahl, Dinneen and Young
Tessie is a maiden with a sparkling eye
Tessie is a maiden with a love
She doesn't know the meaning of her sight
She's got a comment full of love
And sometimes when the game is on the line
              Tessie always carried them away
Up the road from third base to Huntington
The boys will always sing and sway

              Two! Three! Four!

              Tessie, Nuff Said McGreevey shouted
We're not here to mess around
Boston, you know we love you madly
Hear the crowd roar to your sound
Don't blame us if we ever doubt you
You know we couldn't live without you
Tessie, you are the only only only

The Rooters showed up at the grounds one day
They found their seats had all been sold
McGreevey led the charge into the park
Stormed the gates and put the game on hold
The Rooters gave the other team a dreadful fright
Boston's tenth man could not be wrong
Up from third base to Huntington
              They'd sing another victory song

              Two! Three! Four!

              Tessie, Nuff Said McGreevey shouted
We're not here to mess around
Boston, you know we love you madly
Hear the crowd roar to your sound
Don't blame us if we ever doubt you
You know we couldn't live without you
Tessie, you are the only only only

The Rooters gave the other team a dreadful fright
Boston's tenth man could not be wrong
Up from third base to Huntington

Don't blame us if we ever doubt you
You know we couldn't live without you
Boston, you are the only only only
Don't blame us if we ever doubt you
You know we couldn't live without you

I'd be a fan of including more Dropkick Murphys. "For Boston" is a tune that comes to mind. And you have to include "i'm Shipping Up to Boston" for the postgame Papelbon dances.

Yup you are right. Sweet Caroline (instead of Valentine) is sung by Neil Diamond.

                    Seems things have changed...

Hey Annie, I seem to remember what your reaction was when I told you about DKM getting involved with the Red Sox and recording Tessie. I'd quote it here, but that IM conversation is saved elsewhere. Now you're quoting lyrics and talking about the song. Does this mean your taste in music has changed?
