  • Kielty Back

The Sox have brought Bobby Keilty back on a one year deal that will pay him $800k if he makes the major league roster, and up to $300k in incentives.

Seems like a solid move to me.

    MEH.

I think there were better offers to be had.

By Keilty or the Red Sox?

To me, it seems like a pretty good way to add outfield depth at a low cost. The Red Sox now have either Keilty or Crisp they can trade if the opportunity arises, plus depth in case of an injury.

        Who?

I feel this a solid addition. I like what Kielty brought to table when he arrived in Boston. Let's not forget he hit the game winning home run in Game 4 of the World Series. Let's hope he continues to be successful and be a solid player off the bench. Though, I do feel his value is lower if Ellsbury starting in centerfield since that would make Crisp the fourth outfielder.

What do you mean continues to be successful? He sucked it up with us last year.

Pretty much. Maybe Kielty would be better if he abandoned the pretense of switch-hitting but there were still a couple righthanded bats on the market that I thought were better than Kielty at what Keilty is here to do for us. Kevin Mench springs to mind almost immediately.

I was actually hoping we'd be able to make a run at Emil Brown this offseason. He's a decent platoon RHH even if he shouldn't play everyday.

This isn't very nice, but there was a great photo of Bobby Kielty with a huge mop of flaming red hair in an online story about his signing, and the comment section at the bottom had a post that just said,
              "Can he make balloon animals?"
I was puzzled for a sec, then died laughing!
Before all you redheads out there hate my guts, let me say that I'd trade my balding formerly blonde hair for that red mop anyday.

I was referring to his home run during the World Series. I hope he can carry the momentum from that game into this season. So, when I said successful, I was referring to hitting the game winning home run of a World Series.

It's a shame that he hurt his back robbing someone of a home run - remember how he smashed into the bullpen wall and almost broke himself in two? He's a solid player (not fabulous, but certainly not embarrassing), inexpensive, loves the team, and seems to be pleased enough with his role as a bench player. I'm pleased with the signing.

I also think the Ronald McDonald do is a better look than the copper-colored tennis-ball fuzz.

I think you're thinking of J.D. Drew when he did it in May.

Ramirez was replaced in left field Tuesday night by Bobby Kielty, who was then removed in the eighth inning due to a sore lower back.

Kielty had X-rays on Wednesday, which were negative. His back has been bothering him since he crashed into the low fence at Fenway Park to make a terrific catch against the Los Angeles Angels on Aug. 19.

I thought Brandon Moss would get the fifth-outfielder job...
I know you're watching, Si. Bu.

I think that they don't want to stunt Moss' progress as a player by putting him in that role in the majors. He'll have more of a chance to improve playing in AAA every day instead of riding the pine in the majors.

2007 was Moss' first season in AAA, so another year (or partial year) there can only help him.

I guess J.D also crashed into a wall robbing some one of a HR. However, I distinctly remember watching (and seeing on the highlight reel), in one of his 1st games w/Boston, Kielty banging up a rib or two crashing into the Fenway bullpen, robbing someone of a HR.
