  • Predict Colon's Red Sox wins this season.

Personally, I'm always fascinated by the player who ventures into camp after time on the scrap heap. Colon is a fun case to track because of his former success, weight problem, and seeming value with Beckett and Schilling's injury.

So, there are numerous factors: how much will the youngsters contribute, how hurt is Beckett, will Schill pitch at all, will Colon make the team, will he be traded later in the year..... and on and on.

But lets take a stab at making a prediction of his win total with the Red Sox for the 2008 regular season.

    I predict 6.

0, I doubt he sees major league playing time. We need to have many injuries for him to get a start.

As for his year as a whole:
      10-9
      4.50 era

Farrell's been busily raving about his command. I'll give him the benefit of the doubt but I'm not going above 10 wins -- the same as Schilling had -- for a guy who I'm worried about whether he'll stay healthy all year.

For him to get up that high he would have to placate Tavarez from the 6th starter role...which I highly doubt would happen barring injury to someone else.

I could see him getting five total wins all year with those wins coming from spot starts in place of someone on the DL or who needs rest.

I'm sorry, I love Julian Tavarez as a starter because he's jvery entretaining but if I had to choose between Bartolo Colon or Julian Tavarez to take starts I will always choose Colon. I suspect Tavarez won't play out the year in a Boston uniform anyway -- too many other teams are going to need a 5th starter and be willing to take a gamble on one as cheap as Julian and we've got 4 pitchers who could potentially replace him, 5 if you count Hunter Jones..

I've heard on WEEI all day that Colon was hitting 93-94 in his first outing. Does anyone know if that's true? I assume that it is since it's been on the radio a few times. That's a VERY promising sign with Bart. If that's true, that's pretty awesome. Hopefully he can stay healthy, and continue to throw like that, and add something to the ML team this year.

Yeah, I read an article on the official Sox' site and they interviewed Theo and he said Bartolo Colon was dipping in and out of the 93-94 range. That's a good sign and if he stays healthy he could turn into a great low risk pick-up

Multiple places reported that(Fox25, NECN, WHDH etc.), it does look like he is back up in the upper 80s and low 90s consistantly...Plus he looked better than last year from the video shown, you can tell that he clearly lost some weight(rough guess, about 20-25 pounds) and didn't look like he had any problems throwing nor show much rust.

I'm hoping that being around Ramirez, Ortiz, and even Lugo, he'll dig down and give us everything he's got. Here's hoping there's more there than we suspect.

Colon reminds me of Luis Tiant-both grabbed off the scap heap, and we know Tiant went on to star. If history repeats itself...

They have had positive influences on fellow hispanic players before, it might do him good to have them putting positive pressure on him.

He has nothing to lose in following their influence, makes sense to do it.

Honestly I had not thought much of this factor. I might question Manny and Lugo as good influences but no doubt papi sets the tone and is a wonderful influence. And just having so many Spanish speakers around may allow his comfort and thus focus and work ethic. Time will tell.

Well, Bartolo Calzone got hammered yesterday by the Yankees. lol. 2/3 of an inning 41 pitches, 4 ER. I heard his velocity was good though, which I guess is promising. lol. Anyone know how fast he was throwing yesterday?
