Yup. Kielty can't play CF, and neither can Moss really. Kielty has basically shown an inability to hit well at the major league level anymore, and Van Every is at least Moss' equal with the bat too.

I also don't think age should have anything to do with who gets the back up CF position. Unless you're in your 40s.

Really? You'd take a 28 year old with no major league experience over a 24 year old prospect or a guy who's been in the majors for seven years and hit a home run in the World Series? I mean, Kielty isn't great, but I'd take him over Van Every, who only has played about 100 games over AA in his career.

I'm sure Crisp is gonna be gone in the next year or so. i like him but it's inevitable, when the right deal comes along crisp is gone.

This reminds of an off-season rumor after the 1997 season, in which the Expos supposedly wanted to trade Pedro Martinez to the Indians for Jaret Wright. My friends and I were hoping that deal would be made because we felt that Wright would come back down to Earth probably sooner than later, which is how I suspect Ellsbury's career will also play out.

Meanwhile if we start off with Crisp, and if he falters go to Ellsbury, that at least gives us a viable Plan B.

Ellsbury will start the season as the starting CF. We'll see if he can keep the job or not. I expect Ellsbury to be productive, but I do not expect he'll produce at the level people are expecting. Since I feel people expectations of Ellsbury entering this season are far too high. I see people projecting him to be an All-Star, at least by posting up the numbers they expect Ellsbury to put up.

I agree, I meant if we made a package around Carter. Not just Carter.

Maybe he can improve his defensive skills at 1B, but realistically I see the Sox using him as trade bait at the all star break, or the end of the season, for a young catcher. I'd love to see Saltalamachia here. I saw that kid in AA for the Mississippi Braves when I was living down there, and that kids fun to watch.

It's more how they weighted his minor league numbers, and considered what an "expected" BABIP from him is, the power and walk rates are about what I'd expect though. PECOTA's projection was a pretty solid on Ellsbury, Silver specified that he's made his system kinder to rookies since last season, I'll have to look at the predictions for other rookie hitters. However, on the whole PECOTA isn't as kind of a system to hitters as THT's.
