  • Lowell to the 15 Day DL

Looks like picking up Casey is going to come in handy.

Jed Lowrie to be called up.

This first month is going to be a bit dicey so lets hope Lowell can recover fast and the rest will kickstart him when he returns.

From what I've heard, Jed isn't doing so hot in Pawtucket, I doubt we'll see him up, but now that Cora is hurt, who knows.

Wiiliamsburg, I should have posted the AP story with it. I don't know what Lowrie has done so far but it appears he is the one to come up for a couple of weeks. Certainly his ability to play a couple of spots helps. It might also be a way to call him up and keep it fairly pressure free because he is just 'filling in for 15 days'. Might be a smart move.

BOSTON (AP)—World Series MVP Mike Lowell was placed on the 15-day disabled list on Thursday with a sprained left thumb, and the Boston Red Sox purchased the contract of infielder Jed Lowrie from Triple-A Pawtucket to replace him.

Lowell was injured on the first at-bat of Wednesday’s game when he fielded Ivan Rodriguez’s grounder and threw him out. X-rays were negative, but he showed up at Fenway sore on Thursday and was sent for more tests.

“We wanted to allow him to show up and see how he felt,” Red Sox manager Terry Francona said. “There was concern he would be very stiff and sore, which he was.”

Lowell was batting .200 while starting the first nine games at third base.

Kevin Youkilis, who came up through the minor leagues as a third baseman but earned a Gold Glove at first last year, moved back across the diamond on Thursday. Sean Casey played first.

Lowrie, the team’s minor league offensive player of the year last year, went 1-for-4 with a double and an RBI for Pawtucket in a day game Thursday.

Also Thursday, Francona said backup infielder Alex Cora felt a twinge in his elbow and needed to be examined.

It had to be Lowrie. With Cora's possible arm injury we needed someone to back up Youkilis at third over the very short term and Lowrie was the only player with an option who can play third other than the woefully inadequate Spann..

I agree that if Cora wasn't banged up, it wouldn't be Lowrie who was up from Pawucket. In fact, if Cora hadn't gotten hurt, I bet they'd have kept Corey on the roster a bit longer, instead of designating him for assignment, which they'll do today to make room for Mike Timlin to return.

I hope you're not saying that we're going to have guys named Cora and Corey in the lineup at the same time. I have enough trouble keeping track of all this stuff without that kind of a challenge.
