  • Worst Shortstop Mistake: Renteria or Lugo?

I saw this topic on a newspaper online. I would like to see the opinion of the BBF public. Personally, I find it quite the choice. However, I would have to go with Lugo as a bigger mistake.

Lugo has never really done it for me. he consistanlty seem,s to make errors or fails to get a hit, etc. In 2007, his OBP was uner .300. He was hardly on base, let alone scoring position. Whenever we seem to need him (like the game a few days ago where Boston lost 10-9) he just isn't there.

I wasn't a fan of Renteria either. His fielding was nothing special, but at least he could occasionally get the job done.

Now, I make my decision based more on what each has done for the team rather than comparing individual stats because that was why each was acquired. What do you think?

I think that Renteria just showed up hurt...he was constantly stretching his back out during games and wincing (like I was playing slow pitch two nights ago after straining my back on a swing!). I thought that was going to be a pretty good signing, and he's played well since leaving Boston.
Lugo I didn't like from the start...I think that he's a highly questionable person, and showed signs of a severe slide before he was signed for pretty big money. Who would even take him now if the team tried to dump him? At least they were able to pawn Renteria off...
I thought that Gonzalez was a questionable choice for SS...you knew he wasn't going to hit, and he didn't seem to be stellar with the glove that year. I mean, he LOOKED smooth, but I never saw him pull off really great plays. Small sample, of course!

He may of been atrocious on D, but Renteria put up better numbers while he was here then Lugo did last year. As hellborn said, he was damaged goods when he arrived, you can't blame him. Not to mention it was a bigger mistake because we didnt learn from the first time.

Exactly; perfectly worded to prove the point (Same goes to Hellborn).

There's not question that Lugo hasn't hit like expected and he will make his errors here and there, but who will play SS Lowrie???? please, not matter how bad Lugo's defense migth be according to some on this board, his defense specially his range its a lot better than Lowrie.

Sorry, but that's BS. Lugo is pretty aweful on defense. He had a very good year for him last year with 19, and he's already got 10 this year. He's just very bad.

With that said the worst signing was Lugo BY FAR! Let's put it like this, we could get someone to take Renteria, no one would even want Lugo.

The worst mistake was Renteria, because he traded him away instead of sticking with him.

As expected? Are you aware how terrible Lugo was in Los Angeles before he came to Boston? Lugo did hit better last year, but wasn't difficult to improve on mediocre numbers he posted in Los Angeles that made the team bench him.

Do we want to get into discussion about who's a better shortstop? Lowrie and Lugo both have issues as defensive shortstop, but there's a high possibility that Lowrie will out produce Lugo offensively. Renteria struggled during his season here, but Lugo just playing to the level he's capable of. I consider it mistake to have ever brought him onto to the team for that many years.
