  • History Behind the Plate for Varitek!

I was going to come on this morning to ask if anyone knew the record for catching no-hitters, but the Boston Globe answered it for me. Yes, Red Sox Nation, Jason Varitek now holds the record with 4 no-hitters caught/called. :applaud: That's not even counting the number of no-hit bids by the likes of Pedro and Schilling (et al.), who ended up with 1-hitters.

But last night really belongs to Jon Lester, who two years ago wasn't even sure he'd ever live to see last night. Congratulations, Jon. :applaud:

Thanks, Flash, for letting us know that. I had no idea that four would be the record for a catcher.

What I find even more impressive is that it happened with four different pitchers. It would seem likely that a catcher that spent time with Nolan Ryan or a dominant group of aces would hold the record, with a few of the No-no's coming from the same pitcher.

Now if Wakefield could just top it off with the rare knuckleball perfect game....

          sharrock-
it would be nice if you could've caught Ryan's no-hitters, but the thing is he pitched for so many different teams, and threw them over so long a timeframe that it would be hard to stay with him for all.

I'd like someone to do the footwork to see how many 1-hitters Varitek caught. I know he had one with Pedro and another with Schilling. I think there might be another on top of that, but I'm not sure.

Thanks, Macker. Your list brings up another question. Do 'team' one-hitters actually count?

                  Team no-hitters count, why wouldn't team one-hitters?

Wasn't this also an 18 strikeout game?

Tek has caught some great ballgames.
