Mel Parnell and Dave Philley, former Red Sox players, pass away

Parnell:

Former Red Sox pitcher Mel Parnell passed away on Tuesday after battling cancer, the New Orleans Times-Picayune reported. Parnell, 89, was a two-time All-Star (1949, '51) who pitched for Boston from 1947-56 and recorded a 123-75 record with a 3.50 ERA in 289 games (232 starts).

Philley:

Dave Philley, a switch-hitting outfielder who still holds the major league record for most consecutive pinch hits, died Thursday in his hometown of Paris at the age of 91.

Reportedly, he was found slumped over the steering wheel of his vehicle at his ranch.

Services are pending at Fry-Gibbs Funeral Home in Paris.

Parnell was an excellent pitcher for the Red Sox. I think he hurt his arm around 1953 or 1954, and that curtailed his career. I was just beginning to follow baseball late in his career- never saw him pitch. Philley, however, I remember quite well. He was an interesting guy to me. He looked like a strong guy, but he slapped the ball a lot. When I first saw him I thought he'd have quite a bit of power, but he really didn't. I remember seeing him quite a bit in the late 50s when the Phils played the Pirates. Dave Philley, of the Phillies.
