            Stricklett Elmer 1903.jpg

Stricklett pitched just one major league game with Chicago, in 1904, before moving on to Brooklyn for the rest of his career.

Interesting. "Dressed to the Nines" does not show the Sox wearing caps like that (it's a style almost everyone would associate with the Pha. Athletics). And yet apparently they did - see posts 104 and 119 for other examples. Have you tried contacting the HOF? This may be something of a breakthrough, in terms of baseball uniform history.

EDIT - I see, in Okkonen's fantastic Baseball Uniforms of the 20th Century, a Spalding ad from the 1920's that calls the pillbox cap the "Chicago Style". Hmmph.

EDIT 2 - Probably the best known photo of "Cap" (no pun intended) Anson shows him wearing a "pillbox" (although in different colors from the Sox caps shown). I guess that's where Spalding got the term.
