  • Old Timer Bobby Molinaro in Philly Area

There's a Philadelphia Sports Show going on this weekend with tons of players of today and yesterday in town signing autographs and such. Our local sports radio station just had an interview with Bobby Molinaro. I never heard of him, and I guess he was in town (currently lives in FLA.) because he played a few games for the Phillies. He mostly talked about the AL since he played more often there and says his favorite franchise was the Sox - mainly because he played there most. Seems like a nice guy, though I don't ever remember seeing him or hearing his name prior to today.

I remember him more of a Whitesox and a Cub but I do remember he had a baseball card with the Phillies. 1983 Topps card.

"I have the ultimate respect for Whitesox fans. They were as miserable as the Cubs and Redsox fans ever were but always had the good decency to keep it to themselves. And when they finally won the World Series, they celebrated without annoying every other fan in the country."--Jim Caple, ESPN (Jan. 12, 2011)

Nice recall on the '83 card. It was after my time of collecting unfortunately or I may have remembered him simply by that. It brought up some interesting dialogue which led me to post something in the Phillies forum that I never knew.

Yeah I collected from 1981 until 1989 and Molinaro had a pretty cool card with the Phillies compared to his Whitesox cards.

Ouch. You collected right during the boom when cards were made by 3-4 companies and values dropped. Don't feel bad. I tossed out my collection back in '79 or so and I had over 30 Schmidts, Bretts, etc. I actually had to buy one of each back to build up my HOF collection

Yeah I really thought I was making some sound investments back then I figured I'd be living on Lake Shore Drive by now with all the cards I collected. I still have all those cards and i'm still waiting for everyone else to start throwing em out before me.

If Bob Molinaro is an oldtimer, what am I?

              Where did the years go?
"I do not care if half the league strikes. Those who do it will encounter quick retribution. All will be suspended and I don't care if it wrecks the National League for five years. This is the United States of America and one citizen has as much right to play as another. The National League will go down the line with Robinson whatever the consequences. You will find if you go through with your intention that you have been guilty of complete madness."

              NL President Ford Frick, 1947

Don't say that because it makes me feel old.
