  • "Bob" Clemente and "Chico" Cardenas

Every Topps baseball card referred to Roberto Clemente as "Bob" Clemente and Leo Cardenas as "Chico" Cardenas. I NEVER, not even once, heard a writer or announcer or a fan refer to these guys as "Bob" or "Chico". Why did Topps use those names for those players on their Baseball Cards?
"I do not care if half the league strikes. Those who do it will encounter quick retribution. All will be suspended and I don't care if it wrecks the National League for five years. This is the United States of America and one citizen has as much right to play as another. The National League will go down the line with Robinson whatever the consequences. You will find if you go through with your intention that you have been guilty of complete madness."

    NL President Ford Frick, 1947

Bob Prince, voice of the Pirates during Clemente's entire career, sometimes referred to Clemente as Bobby. He also referred to him as Roberto, The Great Roberto, The Great One, and Arriba. My memory is that Prince occasionally called Clemente Bobby all the way through the end of his career.

Prince had a close personal relationship with Clemente and helped him quite a bit in his early seasons, with language and other issues. Prince calling him Bobby was a term of endearment, and was not meant in a demeaning way.

I believe that Clemente was occasionally referred to as Bob in the Pittsburgh newspapers during his early seasons, but that diminished/disappeared over time.

That took me two minutes' search time on google images, there may be more examples but I didn't waste any more time looking.
