  • 1981 Whitesox uniform contest

    whitesox prototype jerseys.jpg

whitesox jersey contest finalists. I think I would have chosen number two. They must have tossed any ideas for a classic uniform.

"I have the ultimate respect for Whitesox fans. They were as miserable as the Cubs and Redsox fans ever were but always had the good decency to keep it to themselves. And when they finally won the World Series, they celebrated without annoying every other fan in the country."--Jim Caple, ESPN (Jan. 12, 2011)

The picture on the right, the center jersey doesn't look to bad.

I just learned how to copy and paste but if anyone thinks the 1982-1986 uniforms are bad, it coulda been alot worse.

Oh wow! #4 would have been interesting. Even the Houston Astros would have mocked them.

They look like something NASA would wear. What were Chicago fans thinking. Of course I don't know the details of the contest either.

The winner of the Whitesox contest went after the Reds next. The Reds obviously made the right choice.

The final product really doesn't look too bad.

Only 1600 people participated. Whitesox reliever Ed Farmer quipped "Well thats 1600 improvements to our current uniform." Little did he know what the Sox were in for.

I agree, but did you have to post a photo with Koosman in the uni? Having grown up a Mets fan, Koos and Seaver never looked quite right wearing Sox uniforms to me.

Then again they could have reverted back to the softball shorts look.

You would think Veeck would come up with something like this, but this was actually under the Reinsdorf ownership if I'm not mistaken.

Veeck was actually going for a retro look with the 1976-1981 uniforms. Those 76-81 uniforms resemble uniforms from 1906. I don't think Veeck would have gone for these NASA uniforms.

I would have to think Reinsdorff was trying to distance himself from Veeck by doing this.

I heard this from a different site but when Reinsdorff took over he was getting alot of complaints about the 76-81 uniforms so thats why he decided to make a contest. I have no idea why he thought these uniforms would be better.

The creater of the uniforms was a Reds or Braves fan with no ties to Chicago except through marriage.
