Here's a recent thread along the same lines. Check it out.

How about this, of those players I've actually seen play (since about 1961):

1B - Cecil Fielder, Rusty Staub
2B - Lou Whittaker, Dick McAuliffe
3B - Aurelio Rodriguez, Dean Palmer
SS - Alan Trammell, Eddie Brinkman
    LF - Willie Horton
CF - Mickey Stanley, Chet Lemon, Gary Pettis (silky-smooth outfielder!)
RF - Al Kaline, Kirk Gibson
C - Lance Parrish (much better arm than Freehan), Bill Freehan
RHSP - Jack Morris, Denny McLain, Joe Coleman
LHSP - Mickey Lolich, Frank Tanana
RHRP - Mike Henneman, Aurelio Lopez
LHRP - John Hiller, Willie Hernandez

That's a 25-man roster with a nine-man pitching staff, five-man starting rotation, a good mix of right and left-handed hitters, power, speed, clutch hitting, defense, designated hitters, pinch-hitters, outfielders that can play all three positions, and late-inning defensive replacements!

I guess if I had to field a team to play a weekend series in Comerica Park -this is the roster card I'd fill out. Note, with a team of this caliber - they deserve a proper introduction:

      Batting Order
1 - Tyrus Raymond "Ty" (The Georgia Peach) Cobb (L/H - CF)
      2 - George Clyde Kell (R/H - 3B)
3 - Samuel Earl (Wahoo Sam) Crawford (L/H - LF)
      4 - Henry Benjamin (Hammerin' Hank) Greenberg (R/H - 1B)
      5 - Lance Michael Parrish (R/H - C)
      6 - Albert William "Al" Kaline (R/H - RF)
      7 - Charles Leonard "Charlie" (The Mechanical Man) Gehringer (L/H - 2B)
      8 - Alan Stuart Trammell (R/H - SS)
      9 - Pitcher's spot - They don't need no stinkin' DH!!!!!!!!!

      Bench
Backup Catcher - William Ashley "Bill" Freehan (R/H - C)
Utility Infielder - Louis Rodman (Sweet Lou) Whitaker Jr. (L/H - 2B)
Utility Outfielder - Harry Edwin (Slug) Heilmann (R/H - OF)
Utility Everything - Mitchell Jack "Mickey" Stanley (R/H - OF/1B/SS/3B)
Pinch Hitter - William James "Gates" Brown - (L/H - OF)

      Pitching Staff
SP - Harold "Hal" (Prince Hal) Newhouser (L/H)
SP - Jack Scott Morris (R/H)
SP - Michael Stephen "Mickey" Lolich (L/H)
SP - James Paul David "Jim" Bunning (R/H)
SP - Dennis Dale "Denny" McLain (R/H)
LR - George Joseph (Wabash George) Mullin (R/H)
MR - Virgil Oliver (Fire) Trucks (R/H)
MR - Henry John 'Hank" Aguirre (L/H)
MR - Paul Howard "Dizzy" Trout (R/H)
MR - Willie Hernandez (L/H - Situational Lefty)
SU - Michael Allen 'Mike" Henneman (R/H)
CL - John Fredrick Hiller (L/H)

Ernie Harwell is the broadcaster :radio - and George Kell would serve the dual role of Clubhouse Reporter (when he isn't in the field of course)

Wow, a Phil Mankowski reference. And it's good to see John Wockenfuss on your list of favorites. He gave me the only signed bat I own.

Of players who spent five or more seasons with the Tigers....

C -- Lance Parrish (with a nod to Freehan)
                  1b -- Hank Greenberg
2b -- Charlie Gehringer (with a nod to Sweet Lou)
                  ss -- Alan Trammell
3b -- George Kell (with a nod to Rodriguez)
LF -- Bobby Veach (with a nod to Horton)
                  CF -- Ty Cobb
RF -- Al Kaline (with a big nod to Sam Crawford)
DH -- Kirk Gibson (Granted, he wasn't that hot when he went back to the Tigers to DH, but this creates a spot for him.)
P -- Jim Bunning, Denny McLain, Mickey Lolich, Jack Morris, Hal Newhouser (these are in no particular order)

Now, if you're going to include players who spent less than five seasons with the Tigers, you'd want Cochrane in there as your catcher and Rocky Colavito as your left fielder. Oh, and probably Staub as your DH.

what no Dmitri Young in any of these lists ?

in the game of his career May 6 at Baltimore, establishing a career high with five hits and two triples and matching his career best with two home runs and five RBI...became just the fourth player in major league history to collect two triples and two home runs in the same game, the first since San Francisco's Willie Mays on May 13, 1958 -- New York's Lou Gehrig ( 1928) and Cleveland's Lew Fonseca ( 1929) are the only other two players to accomplish the feat...finished with 15 total bases during the game, one shy of the club record of 16 set by Ty Cobb.

In this game mentioned above, Young needed a double for the cycle, late in the game. He stretched a double into a triple in a game the Tigers were blowing Baltimore away. He could have stopped at second and get the cycle.

Also, when he was playing for Cincy, he lived a block away from the ballyard, and he used to ride his Mountain Bike to the Stadium.

I know all these players listed here deserve to be on these lists; all great baseball players. I just watched a show a few months back about the '68 Tigers. What a great story.

The Craziest proper names (not nick) all time Tigers

Enos Cabbell (Enos is just too close to anus & was it Campbell? or Cabbell?)
                      Barbero Garby
                      Jim Whalewander
Matt Nokes (I just like the almost nonsence poem of 2-0 on Nokes)
                      John Walkenfus
Rusty Staub (sounds like a problem youd have with your screen door)
That Misquito guy from Japan we had in the late 90s
Frank Tanana (be by fo fanna)
                      Champ Summers

Ok well, my brain no work so good no more... you guys run with this if youd like.
