Too bad we couldn't open every season against the Royals. The defense looked good, and Chris Shelton was amazing. He made a couple of good plays at first base, and just missed his third homer of the day by about 10 feet (to the right). Carlos Guillen also looked sharp, playing good defense and popping a homer to left-center. Kenny Rogers pitched good, allowing only one run over six innings. Todd Jones to the DL? No matter, as rookie Joel Zumaya came in and shut down the Royals while nearing 100 mph on every heater he threw. That change-up looked very good too, after his nerves settled down a bit. Two scoreless innings in his MLB debut...that's impressive. Rodney nailed down the save in Jones' absense.
A few negatives from this game was the inability of the heart of the order to get anything done. Maggs, Pudge, Dmitri....they all looked impatient at the plate, just like what Tram had to witness all last season. Those guys need to learn how to work a count, not just whiff at the first pitch they see every time. We're lucky it was the Royals and not the Yankees, we would have gotten whooped. Hopefully Leyland won't let them celebrate too much, it's just one game.
