  • 1914 Detroit team photo

I am new to this website and absolutely love the old team photos, however, I was saddened to find no team photo of the 1914 Tigers in uniform while all the other years, previous to and after 1914 can be found. I am particularly interested in the 1914 team as my father's uncle was a member. I see him in the team photo where all are dressed in suits. Anyone have any ideas on where to search for a team photo from 1914, where the players are in uniform? I've searched Cooperstown, the Tigers' website and even the fabulously generous Ernie Harwell searched for me but could only muster one photo of my great-uncle when he played for the Phillies in 1918. I would greatly appreciate any suggestions where I might find a photo of the 1914 team in uniform. Thank you.

    Welcome, welcome.

Wow, you've done your share of digging. If the HOF itself doesn't have it, and their archives seem to have everything, it may be something only a private citizen/collector would have. Have you tried the News or Free Press? Or maybe the Detroit Historical Society. The main public library building on Woodward also as a treasure trove of Tiger clippings on archive, although, as it is named for Harwell, he probably would have guided you in that direction if he felt there was a photo of the team in there.

Thanks for the reply. I neglected to mention that Ernie Harwell also searched the other places you mentioned. I'll keep searching the web, etc., but may have to be satisfied with what I have. Thanks again!

Sixfootsix, I'm guessing your great-uncle was Miles "Alex" Main. This link (scroll down a ways) shows a pic of him in uniform, though I cannot be certain it's from his time as a Tiger.

And check this out...the image on the Hunt Auctions site is too small to see the detail properly, but it shows that a 1914 team photo in uniform does exist!

Miles Main was noted for his height -- I take it that's where your screen name comes from. Possibly he may be the man on the far left or the man in the middle.

Thank you, VIBaseball. The first link you gave may be from his days playing "semi-pro" for a Flint, Michigan team. I'll show it to my brother and dad to see what they think. I've never seen either photo you found, so I am grateful, indeed!

I love that Cobb appeared in the 1914 panaromic more than once because he ran into the new field of view while the photographer was panning the camera.
Maybe that's why it's rare, it was considered ruined by Cobb's little joke?
