  • Max Scherzer

What an incredible turnaround this guy has had, huh? Through the end of May, his ERA was 5.55. Through the end of June, it was 4.98, through the end of July it was 4.62 and through the end of August it was 4.13. In just his six starts, he is 5-0 with a 1.80 ERA with 53 strikeouts and only 10 walks in 40 innings of work. Gotta give him props for doing so well of late.

I don't know what he did but it really seems to have worked. He's this years Doug Fister for the Tigers.

"I have the ultimate respect for Whitesox fans. They were as miserable as the Cubs and Redsox fans ever were but always had the good decency to keep it to themselves. And when they finally won the World Series, they celebrated without annoying every other fan in the country."--Jim Caple, ESPN (Jan. 12, 2011)

I loved the move for the Tigers that got Scherzer there. Nobody questioned his ability - just his durability. He's a high-K guy and should have a very productive future.

He's picked up right where he left off, posting a 2.84 ERA with a league-leading 30 strikeouts (in only 19 innings) to start the season. He's an All-Star quality pitcher, I hope he makes a few Games in his career.

It will go down as one of the great deals in Tigers history, no doubt.

Not bad for a No. 2. I just hope people don't look at those numbers and then at Verlander's numbers and think Verlander has been surpassed. I'm not sure if the radio comfy armchair guy I heard this morning was serious or not, but he said Verlander has been mediocre compared to Scherzer.

I wouldn't say Verlander has been mediocre. He just hasn't been JV of 2011. And because of his 2011 mega-season, there are a lot more expectations from him. Perhaps a bit unrealistic at times, but hey, if you sign a contract that big you're going to be under the microscope.

Scherzer has better numbers across the board than JV this year though. He's leading the team in K rate, and is the only Tiger with a WHIP under 1.0. His ERA doesn't reflect it so much because he gives up home runs, but there's a lot of season left. If he had a lower ERA, he'd be a shoo-in for the Cy Young award of the first half. We'll just halve it and call it the Cy. If he keeps it up, he'll have the Cy and the Young in November, good lord willing. And Clay Buchholz.

Verlander still has been very, very good. Scherzer has been great, it also seems he is getting the offensive support we were expecting the Tigers to have been able to produce this year.

I would say verlander has been good but not very good. a 3.77 ERA in that park and Division is very solid but not great. that being said he was a Little unlucky (xFIP is 3.4) so I expect him to improve but not to a CY top-3 Level.

I think he will end up with about a 3.3 ERA and finish like 6th in the CY voting.

I'd be surprised if he finished in the top 10 Cy Young voting.

                      Hiroki Kuroda
...and a handful of closers will probably end up higher in the voting.

if verlander performs like currently yes but if he improves to a 3.2-3.3 ERA and throws 230+ IP I don't see him finishing much worse than 6th.
