  • Twins make some cuts

Twins optioned RHP Anthony Swarzak, RHP Armando Gabino, shortstop Trevor Plouffe and infielder Steven Tolleson to Triple-A Rochester; optioned third baseman Deibinson Romero to Single-A Fort Myers; reassigned RHP Rob Delaney, LHP Ben Julianel, catcher Danny Lehmann, infielder Toby Gardenhire, third baseman Danny Valencia and outfielder Dustin Martin to minor league camp.
No big surprises. Swarzak is arguably the team's top pitching prospect, but he has just five career starts at Triple-A and likely wouldn't be the first starter called up in case of an injury to the Twins' rotation. Delaney could emerge as a setup option by midseason, while the Twins are hoping that Valencia will be ready to take over for Joe Crede at third base in 2010.

    Twins cut Macri, Hughes, Matos

FORT MYERS, Fla. — The Minnesota Twins optioned infielders Matt Macri and Luke Hughes to Class AAA Rochester today, and outfielder Luis Matos was also assigned to minor-league camp.

Macri, a utility infielder, spent two stints with the Twins last season, batting .324 in 18 games. Hughes, who missed two weeks of camp to play for the Australian team in the World Baseball Classic, is expected to be the Red Wings' third baseman this season after batting .429 this spring. Matos, who played seven seasons with the Orioles and Nationals, batted .125 this spring.

The cuts leave 39 players in camp for the Twins, with two weeks remaining before the 2009 season opens April 6.

      Twins cut Mulvey, Gosling

Twins reassigned RHP Kevin Mulvey and LHP Mike Gosling to minor league camp; optioned C Wilson Ramos to Double-A New Britain.
Mulvey, who had a 3.86 ERA in seven innings, will be one of the top alternatives for the rotation if injuries strike this season. Ramos, one of the Twins' top prospects, is probably still a full year away from being a realistic option to fill in for Joe Mauer.
