  • Andy Phillips

I was wondering what Yankee fans thought about Andy being Jason's back-up going into next season.

How is he with the glove? How much playing time and ABs do you think he'll get as Giambi will likely DH a good bit? What could we expect from him(his AAA numbers were quite good)? Do you think a veteran glove should be utilized or do you prefer a lowcost farmhand such as Phillips.

Thanks for any and all replies.

I guess you may know my point of view regarding youngsters.

If his numbers were quite good and he can handle the job at first, just give the guy a chance.

From what i have seen from Andy P. is that hes got a decent glove and can become a very good corner infielder. Obviously he will never start but he will be a solid back-up for A-rod and Giambi. The only thing that i do not like about Phillips is that he is a very free swinger and doesnt make contact very often. Last year he had a dismal .150 BA and a pathetic OBP of .171. He needs to have more patience which will come with experience. Personally last year i would have rather have had TINO ( one of my absolute favorites ) then Phillips.

what are you talking about? Tino was there last year, and he got more playing time than Phillips. Only reason Phillips had a couple callups was injuries. You're mistaken, Tino was there last year.

I dont mind having Phillips at all, in fact I am very happy with it. Ive been following him for several years in the minors and its nice to see that he's getting a real shot here.

56 chmps, you're base your opinion of Andy's offense on 40 AB alone. He has had only 48 AB at the major league level, having 8 AB in 2004. Granted, he has only 8 professional career hits in 48 chances, so that's not too good, but it also need to be consider that he doesn't have the chance to play everyday, which could throw a player off and not allow him to get into a groove.

On that note, I think Phillps need to get more constant chances at bats, meaning playing everyday or every other day, which I just never see happen in NY at this point, for him to get fair chance on the offense side. I think Tino should have been brought back, because I believe he's superior to Phillps' defensive skills and looking at this year Yankee team, they don't really need to care about offense from DH and 1B spot, depend on what position Giambi playing on that given day.

Phillps is nice, but I don't think he'll ever dazzle people with his bat at this point. Though I could be wrong.

what he showed in his few at bats last year is not indicative of what he is capable of. his minor league career has been very good and shown a lot of talent.

i like him. i hope torre keeps him on the field.

I know that we had tino last year i meant that i would have rather have had him playing then Phillips. I know he hasen't played that much but i was just saying what i saw. Also i have no idea what he did in the minors so if you guys say he did good i trust you.
