Yeah, he was a 2B/3B in his earlier days in the minors. Supposedly, he's at 1B in the majors for a reason. He looked solid to me defensively last year at First, but that was a small sample.

I still would have taken a flyer on Frank Thomas. For $500,000 grand, why not?

That being said, Yankees scouts see Phillips as a 20 HR/80 RBI guy backing up at first. I hope so...

I'm pulling for Andy too, I saw Andy play for the Staten Island Yankees in 1999 when he first signed, he is a good guy with alot of talent. If they let him play he'll hit for average and power, he is a better fielder then Giambi let Jason DH and Andy play 1st.

Cashman said a lot of nice things about Bubba Crosby before signing Johnny Damon, too. Cashman is a GM. If his lips are moving he is lying.

As for Phillips he has yet to break into "Torre's Ring of Trust" so he is behind the 8-ball to start with. Since he is really a 1B/DH type there isn't much room for him on either field or the bench. He'll need some injuries to get playing time.

    Andy Phillips?

What does everyone think of Andy Phillips heading into this year. He's 28, so he's a little on the old side for a rookie, but I've read so many things from Cashman and Yankee scouts this offseason that they seem really high on Phillips and are content with him playing a pretty big role this year. They are so content, that they'd rather have Phillips then bring in Piazza, Thomas, and now hopefully Sosa, at bargain prices.

I was looking at his minor league numbers. He's always shown good power, but in recent years he's developed more discipline and better base-hitting. Here is his Columbus numbers from the past two years:

    2005: .300, 22, 54, .952 OPS
    2004: .318, 26, 85, .957 OPS

I'm thinking he's earned his shot, and it's a little overdue. At the very least, over a whole season, he'll probably be a better backup 1Bman than Tino was last year, and at the very most, he'll provide reliable hitting and a glove that will give the team some more depth and options at 1B/DH.
