  • What If . . .

Mark Prior didn't goto College and did sign with the team that drafted him, The Yankees.

Would Prior be a Cy Young winner by now? Would the Yanks have beaten the Marlins '03 or the Red Sox in '04? Or do you believe the Yanks would have traded him for something like Wil Cordero and 2 'Prospects'?

I suspect that Randy Johnson wouldn't be a Yankee and Brad Halsey, Dioner Navarro are still Yankees....maybe even Javy Vazquez is still in the Bronx because that would have pushed him to the back of the rotation, to maybe 3 or 4 on the staff.
"After my fourth season I asked for $43,000 and General Manager Ed Barrow told me, 'Young man, do you realize Lou Gehrig, a 16-year-man, is playing for only $44,000?' I said, Mr. Barrow, there is only one answer to that - Mr. Gehrig is terribly underpaid."- Yankees outfielder Joe DiMaggio

I'd bet Prior would have been traded by now. When drafted out of highschool, he was a great prospect, but he didn't have the hype he had coming out of college (at which point the Yankees would have been fools for trading him).

I don't know about a Cy Young. He has shown a penchant for being injured, but then again, Torre doesn't abuse his starters nearly like Dusty Baker does.

I still think the Yankees would have tried to trade for Johnson. Steinbrenner can be a glutton, and sometimes he wants certain players really badly. Johnson was one of them.

I agree. George coveted Johnson after what he did to us in the 1995 ALDS, then that was only fueled when Randy dominated us in the 2001 World Series. I always kinda had this feeling that he'd be donning pinstripes some time before his career was over.
