Donnie Baseball is, as always, a super classy guy. I feel for his wife, too...being a baseball wife is probably not very easy, despite the material comforts I'm sure she has enjoyed. A husband being absent for months on end with kids to raise must be a big strain. I know that Donnie is an Indiana boy through and through, but I really wonder if things might have been different if he had moved his family closer to the NYC area. Maybe they did live there during the season, I don't know...but, I can see him wanting the boys to be raised in peaceful, low key IN.
Our "Mattingly"'s comments on Ron Howard are on the mark, but I do hold one thing against that guy...he cast his gross and ugly brother, who had no acting ability, in some of his movies. He's the NASA ground control guy in "Apollo 13" who looks and acts like a biggest dork you ever met.

I think, without personal problems, he would have been a better skipper than Girardi, as I think the players would have respected him before, as he has done it all, in their situation.

When you hear of Don Mattingly's family, I think of the anonymity you'll hear of director Ron Howard, who'd starred as "Opie" on "Mayberry RFD" and starred (and I think produced) on Happy Days. Anyway, he's always been a classy entertainment person with a big name, and you never hear of any controversy, wild parties or someone getting arrested for narcotic drugs at his house. Never any crazy news. I've always thought of Don Mattingly exactly like this.
We'll see what happens, but as to myself, I'd like to think that with this kind of thing going on, Donnie would have to worry more his family than anything related to his adopted Yankee organization and Yankee fan families.

Guest repliedOriginally posted by Mattingly View PostWell, I'm not too sure that the moustachioed Donald Arthur Mattingly, #23 who's long been beloved by Yankee fans the world over, would've ever heard of me. He's my namesake.
I think that the Yanks would've been forced to re-interview both Girardi and Pena had Donnie Baseball withdrawn his availability. I'm not sure how easy it is to tear up a baseball contract, but in Donnie's case, the team wouldn't want to risk any PR nightmare in obligating him to fulfill this.
I do hope that no further crazy events come about from this, and that the Mattingly family can at least have peace, even if the parents go their separate ways, as is possible.

I feel really bad for what is happening to a guy who is an all-around class act. It's also good to know he isn't bitter towards the organization.
