  • Yankee trivia -- stolen bases

Yes, we're still waiting for spring training. I was talking with a friend at work who's a Yankee fan about how this franchise has historically relied on the long ball. They've used steals to their advantage when need be, but only eight men in club history have posted 40 or more SB in a single season (some of them multiple times). Can you name them?

Ricky Henderson is a no brainer.

I also know Alfonso Soriano and Steve Sax had 40+ in a season for them.

That's three. Rickey (4x) holds the top three spots in club history; even in his "down year" with the Yankees he still swiped over 40.

Soriano and Sax (whom I'd clean forgotten about until I researched the question) each did it twice.

Of the remaining five, I would call two seriously difficult even to students of Yankee history. A third is difficult, but the other two are not all that hard.

Hal Chase stole 40 in 1910 and Ben Chapman stole 61 in 1931

          Roberto Kelly, Early 90's.

I cheated on this one, but Wid Conroy 1907.

I think some guy in the 1900's had like 80 SB's too. He might have been on the same team as Conroy, I just don't feel like researching atm.

Chapman (well done) and Kelly are two of the five I was seeking.

Conroy and Chase date from the Highlanders era. I should have made clear that I was counting only since the team became the Yankees, but I did say franchise history, so I will stand corrected.

Still three left from the Yankee era.

Without looking it up I`d add Mickey Rivers and Hal Chase but I could be wrong

EDIT- I was right on both but somebody mentioned Chase before me

OK, that leaves two from the Yankee era. Mike27 is on the right track -- the one guy held the club record for decades before Rickey broke it. I remember seeing it on the back of the Topps team cards.

The other is not ancient history but not recent either.

I was thinking Knoblauch when I saw this. He came up just short- 38 in his last Yankee season.
