  • Damon Almost Retired Last Spring

I don't know if anyone remembers, but there were a few days last spring where Damon left the team for undisclosed personal reasons. Well Jon Heyman reports today that Damon left the team because he was seriously considering retiring.

The article also notes that Damon looks healthier and more enthusiastic this year.

When I first heard this I couldn't believe it. Damon in 2006 had one of his best seasons. I could see him being burnt out, but he always seems like that happy go lucky guy. It really is hard to believe he almost retired. It's also hard to believe because Yankee fans kind of warmed up to him being pinstripes. I'm glad he's back, because he really is a spark plug in that offense and that dugout. I hope Damon brings back his old self and some pop in his bat.

      If only he would have...
"he probably used some performance enhancing drugs so he could do a better job on his report...i hear they make you gain weight" - Dr. Zizmor

"I thought it was interesting and yes a conversation piece. Next time I post a similar story I will close with the question "So, do you think either of them have used steroids?" so that I can make the topic truly relevant to discussions about today's game." - Eric Davis

I guess I wouldn't place any serious stock in this story. He may well have left to contemplate his situation in life, but the odds are overwhelming that he would not walk away healthy with $30M sitting on the table.

If he would have the Yankees would have ended up with a limp LF this year. I like Hideki Matsui, but his range in the outfield isn't great and Damon is alot faster in LF.

$30M might make any man change his mind...quickly
"After my fourth season I asked for $43,000 and General Manager Ed Barrow told me, 'Young man, do you realize Lou Gehrig, a 16-year-man, is playing for only $44,000?' I said, Mr. Barrow, there is only one answer to that - Mr. Gehrig is terribly underpaid."- Yankees outfielder Joe DiMaggio
