  • Opening Day Roster Announced

The Opening Day Roster has been announced:

    C: Jorge Posada, Jose Molina
    1B: Jason Giambi, Shelley Duncan
    2B: Robinson Cano
    SS: Derek Jeter
    3B: Alex Rodriguez
    IF: Wilson Betemit, Morgan Ensberg
    LF: Johnny Damon, Hideki Matsui
    CF: Melky Cabrera
    RF: Bobby Abreu

    SP: Chien-Ming Wang
    SP: Mike Mussina
    SP: Phil Hughes
    SP: Ian Kennedy
    RP: Brian Bruney
    RP: Jonathan Albaladejo
    RP: Billy Traber
    RP: Ross Ohlendorf
    RP: LaTroy Hawkins
    RP: Kyle Farnsworth
    RP: Joba Chamberlain
    CP: Mariano Rivera

    DL: Andy Pettitte, Jeff Karstens

The only surprise, IMO, is Albaladejo. He was pretty good this spring, though nothing spectacular. Girardi seems to like him as Albaladejo got a lot of opportunities this spring. The real question, IMO, is why Albaladejo (and perhaps Bruney) over Scott Patterson or Darrell Rasner? Patterson pitched as well as you could have asked a guy to pitch, giving up just 1 hit all spring, and he doesn't make the team? I guess the team doesn't feel it needs a longman/spot starter either, and thus Rasner was left out, proving again that the organization just doesn't seem to like him. I get the strange feeling that if Karstens was healthy, he'd had have made the team despite being terrible lately and being much more inconsistent on the whole than Rasner.

I still don't see what Ensberg adds to the team or what he's done to earn a spot. He's batting like .230 this spring, and the BA has been in freefall since he was added to the 40 man roster.

You forgot Joba in the bullpen.

Perhaps they decided Ohlendorf can be used as a longman if need be. I'm down with that. I'm fine with Patterson missing out although I feel he has less to learn in the minors than Ohlendorf or Bruney because he will be seen sooner or later this season.
After an offseason scare with blood clots, Shelley Duncan said yesterday he feels "wonderful -- like a stallion"

Maybe, but I don't think Ohlendorf has pitched more than an inning at a time this spring. I did read somewhere else that Girardi anticipates adding a longman very soon, and of course, Ohlendorf, Bruney, and Albaladejo will be vying for the first week of the season to not be the player sent down for Pettitte. I suppose it makes sense to foresake the longman to start the season given that there is an off day and it is the beginning of the season, so the relievers should be rested enough.

I suppose Joba could be used to pitch 2 or 3 innings if needed. Most seem to assume he'll be the setup man, but we haven't really heard much to that effect.

So, What does everyone think the Opening day lineup is going to be. I think the only question is if Matsui or Giambi is DH, than Shelley would be 1rst if Giambi is DH and Damon is in LF if Matsui is the DH. Besides that you can predict what the lineupp will be. What do the rest of you think?

I believe Joba was left off the list by accident.

With Halladay pitching, they'll likely go with their lefty lineup, which I imagine will be Giambi at 1B and likely Matsui at DH. Ideally, that's probably the lineup Girardi would like out there on most nights. I have no idea what the order will be though after the first four (Damon, Jeter, Abreu, A-Rod).

After these four they can still make a nice left-right-left-right lineup, with all the switch hitters we have.

While there are few guys I would rather have on this team, it looks far better then last year.
