  • Spring Training

Hi all. This thread is dedicated just for discussion about the Yankees spring training. The games, the players, the roster moves, the injuries, speculation, and whatever.

So what does everyone think so far this spring?

    chacon

Chacon looks good. Wonder about Wright. Moose? Johnson?

    Achilles heel. Yeesh.

Chacon has looked good in his two starts. I've been predicting a big year for Chacon. His breaking stuff is great, his poise is great, I just think he needed to get out of Colorado to make the most of his stuff. I'd say he's a potential ace in the making, but his hard stuff is not as impressive as one would like, so he really has to rely on location and movement. A pitcher like that can be very good, but it's tough to be an ace (unless you're Greg Maddux) without the good fastball.

The young Wang went scoreless over 3 innings, allowing only 1 hit. Sheffield had a sac fly, Posada drove in 3 with a longball.

We only hit into 2 DPs, but seemed like more. At one point, we had bases loaded, no outs, but only 1 run scored. Not very good, to say the least, but it's still spring. Still, THUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUU Yankees win! :gt

This must be mentioned - Has anyone else noticed that Scott Erickson has yet to give up an ER this spring? He's made 4 appearances for 6.1 innings, has 8 Ks, and given up 5 Hits. Pretty impressive.

While I am intrigued to see how well he's been pitching, I am a bit annoyed about how often he's being used at the expense of getting a look at some of the guys that have been toiling in the system. He's made more appearances than everyone except Ron Villone, and has pitched the fourth most innings and that's without even starting a game.

Matt DeSalvo is another who has looked good so far. He's thrown 5 innings, with 1 start, and hasn't given up an ER yet.

            I hadn't realized that Scott's 38. That's up there.

Who did you think should get the time instead? Colter Bean? Sean Henn?

Perhaps the Yanks are favoring him, since they imagine him as a utility pitcher whose most used out of the pen.

I haven't checked the spring stats. Where do you get these? Doesn't make me look like a genius for not knowing this.

How about this. These youngsters are promising. Hopefully this won't be a reason for Frankensteinbrenner to trade them away for a big name.

I was talking about Radio. Montreal is close enough to Vermont that we pick up radio stations from there. In Vermont they carry all of the regular season games on an AM radio station that I can listen to here.

Where is Jason Giambi. I haven't seen him on any box scores. Is he playing, practicing or ???

                          wondering, -cg

I think we have to talk more about Shawn Chacon. He's been incredible this spring. He could cut down his walks a bit, but the fact that he hasn't given up an ER despite the walks shows that he can work out of jams. Just needed to get out of that thin air.

I also like what I'm seeing from Kevin Thompson, Melky Cabrera, and Matt DeSalvo. It's unfortunate that no matter how good of an impression these young guys make, their chance to really crack through is small.

                              Giambi

Ok, I'll answer my own question. Giambi had a minor calf strain and was back in the line-up today with a 2-run sacrifice fly. He says he feels great. Mussina put up some nice numbers. Damon's news is a bit worrisome. We may have all of them back after friday anyway. I'm rooting for Korea to do the damage, but we may be humbled beyond belief.
