  • Colter Bean...What Gives?

Why do I keep hearing his name mentioned?
Some scouts say he could actually help the Yanks out...but why aren't the Yanks giving him a chance?

I don't see what there is to lose by giving him a chance? I mean Jesus, Cashman! Torre was marching Sturze, Proctor, Heredia too....I don't see why maybe someone else knows why?

I see his numbers for the last 3 years in AAA and they look mighty impressive to me. ERA under 3.01 each season.
"After my fourth season I asked for $43,000 and General Manager Ed Barrow told me, 'Young man, do you realize Lou Gehrig, a 16-year-man, is playing for only $44,000?' I said, Mr. Barrow, there is only one answer to that - Mr. Gehrig is terribly underpaid."- Yankees outfielder Joe DiMaggio

I've been wondering the same thing for the past couple of years. Surprising that he hasn't even had a chance.

I can't argue against giving Proctor some work though. He's got a terrific fastball and I think he'll improve with more ML work. He also did a pretty nice job in a spot-start last year.

Bean is not on Torre's radar which means he doesn't exist.

        One of life's great mysteries.

Scouts don't like him because he's fat, has an awkward delivery, and doesn't throw hard. It's been ignored that he's been dominating the minors for the past couple of years. I always think of the Moneyball chapter on Chad Bradford when Bean's name comes up.

I'd love to see him get an extended look in the majors some time, but like KC said he's not one of Torre's guys, so don't hold your breath waiting to see him.

Meh, Proctor hasn't shown the ability to pitch well in the majors. Procter is actually slightly older than Bean, so its not like he's a young guy who just needs some time. He hasn't been as good in the minors, and has hr tendencies that absolutely kill his chance of being a useful reliever. But With Torre, Al Leiter will pitch before any of the young guys do. It's the same thing with the DH spot; Bernie is going to play there and Phillips will rot on the bench again, even though most people know Phillips is probably a better hitter at this point.

            DX,
I honestly like Proctor but his Fastball doesn't impress me because he cannot throw it for a strike if it was to save his own life!

But it's crazy cuz Bean has been doing his thing in AAA.
And if he doesn't fit the "mold" then what about Ben Weber? Bradford? K'Rod? These are your proto-type relievers yet they all had very good success. I just don't get why he doesn't get a chance to prove he can pitch?
What's the harm? Give him garbage innings...I mean Torre gives Sturze chance after chance and I cringe!

I saw Andy Phillips play for the Staten Island Yankees and we knew he'd be a good player in 1999. He has been very good every place he's played and he deserves his chance to get 300-400 at bats at 1st base and DH. I think the Yankees fans who haven't really seen him play will be quite surprised at the production he will give the Yankees.
